  1. Bluezoom is an advertising/marketing agency that has been at 230 S Elm St. for a year or so. This location is in the 200 block of Elm St. between February One and Washington St. They were on the street level and I bleieve they have moved to the second floor?? Signage is in the window but it looks pretty empty on the 1st floor. Here is their website: http://www.bluezoom.bz/portfolio.cfm The other location you spoke of is in the 500 block of S. Elm. (527 S. Elm. I think) It's another Lomax project but I'm not sure what its going to be.
  2. Downtown advocates has always considered this project to be a major catalysis in the revitalization of downtown Greensboro. It's impact will be significant! I look forward to completion!
  3. Good discussion going here guys! The rendering looks pretty cool. I think it could work there if it were tweaked a bit. At first look, I liked it, but I will have to admit that the Providence, RI building would fit there much better. It's not a "wow" kind of building but a building like that would fit well in that section of S. Elm!
  4. I'm all for preservation, but it can be taken way too far! I have faith that any issues with this project can be worked out and the project can move forward quickly. The excitement of this project by downtown activists will far outweigh any opposition. The developer will get what he's asking for and the project will be a go! As a matter of fact, I don't recall opposition when the Greeville, SC developers proposed the 8 story Hampton Inn across the parking lot at McGee and Greene. Besides, are we supposed to just let the vacant lot sit there for the sake of preservation? All it is used for now is yearly Christmas tree sales!
  5. It is nice to see the increased pedestrain traffic and energy on S. Elm associated with the opening of Mellow Mushroom! I hope this will lead to more businesses locating in that section of downtown.
  6. Wow! According to this article, it does seem like the beginning of the end for Greensboro! Who knew? Nothing in the article about the Fed Ex Hub, Fed Ex Ground, Honda Jet or the blessing of a few recent job annoucements. Nothing in the atricle about us being well positioned for a bright economic future once the current recession is over? It's enough to scare me! Summerfield! Quick! Annex us before we crash and burn! http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/conte...ne+channel_news
  7. As I look around downtown Greensboro, I see a ton of wasted space that is currently used as parking lots. As the downtown district grows, there will no doubt be a great need for more parking. This issue all about land management. Parking decks are more efficent as you can stack cars vertical. This is a great problem for Greensboro to have! We are growning! We only have so much land downtown. Our future success or failure will be partly related to how well we manage the land we have left. I know our history has not been to build vertical with our offices and parking. But it is the smart thing to do for our future success. Ask any developer what the number one problem is when trying to get a company to locate offices downtrown. It is parking. There is a tremendous cost involved when a developer has to build both a parking deck and office tower. I do not know the cost of office space. However, I do know that the average cost of one parking space in a deck is about $15,000. In most cities there is a working relationship between the city and developer. The city absorbs the cost of the parking and the developer builds the office space. It is a smart way to do business! I only give our city leaders credit when they earn it. But I've got to say I applaud our city leader on stepping up to the plate on this one.
  8. It is interesting to read the debate in this forum regarding the need (or not) of another hotel in downtown Greensboro. Guys, do you realy believe a developer would sink millions of dollars in another hotel if they didn't think the project would fly? Why does it matter if we think there is a need or not! Developers do tons and tons of research before they ever move forward with a project. Otherwise they would go out of business. I don't know if there is a need or not for another hotel. Let the research make the decision. I'd be delighted if a project were announced tomorrow! I don't understand why some of you feel otherwise! I do think that once another hotel project is announced, other proposed projects will be scraped or put on hold for several years. Of the ones in the works at the moment, the only one that has real legs is the proposed hotel at Davie and February One. Currently research (there's that word again) is being done to see if the project would fly. We will see. If it does get off the ground, I think it would most likely be a Wyndham.
  9. The News & Record reports today on a possible new buyer for part of the Bellemeade property in downtown Greensboro. Maybe a new oroject is on the way! http://www.news-record.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...STAFF/438880932
  10. Dreamspec, welcome to the forum. We look forward to your posts. I apprecite your attitude about you and your girlfriend staying in the Triad! I hope other local graduates will follow your lead and stay here too. I believe this area has lots to offer people of all age groups. Though we have lagged a bit behind Raleigh and Charlotte in growth, I think this area has a bright future. I made a career move to Greensboro from Wilmington. I planned to stay here for a couple of years....That was 20 years ago!
  11. As some of you may have read in today's Greensboro News & Record, there will be a transit "open house" in downtown Greensboro on February 12th. This will be a great opportunity for us to voice our ideas and help shape the future of transportation in Greensboro and the rest of the Triad. I encourage you to attend if you can. If not, you can email your ideas. Give them an ear full!! http://www.news-record.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...STAFF/930082096
  12. The incentives package from the city of Greensboro for this project was 1.2 M and nothing from Guilford Co.
  13. I don't know Zack Matheny. However, I'd sure like to hear his views. Having read the N & R story, I was surprised to read that Milton Kern is 90% sure he will run! Interesting! I don't know him very well, but he and I have had some good conversations about DT over a burger, fries, and a Cheer Wine at Fincastle's. He has done quite a bit for downtown Greensboro as well. Cityboi, if you read this, you may want to consider making this a seperate topic. It would be interesting to get everyone's two cents!
  14. So far, Yvonne Johnson is the only person to announce she is running for mayor. If someone doesn't step up to the plate soon...I'm moving to High Point! Nothing against Johnson, but we do need some young "new blood" in local goverment. At this point, if Medaloni jumped into the ring, he'd get my vote.
  15. Very interesting info! I wonder if our county commissioners of today are really any different than those of 1960? Having watched their meetings on cable, I don't think so! What a joke and embarrassment to our community! I think most would agree that "major" mistakes have been made throughout Greensboro's history. It is my belief that we would today equal or have passed Charlotte in development if our leaders would have been more progressive in their thinking. Charlotte took the ball and ran with it back in the 60's and 70's. I painfully say...Good for them! I believe we are soon to be tested again in a major way! "If" the rumored downtown project is Disney...and "If" they select Greensboro, you can bet they will ask for the farm! They will seek an incenatives package that will make the "Dell Deal" seem like cookie crumbs! The question is...Is Greensboro ready to play ball or allow this project (whatever it is) to go to a city that has a real vision and game plan for its future!
  16. As a biker, jogger, and soon to be resident of DT Greenboro, I'm very excited about the Greenway project. I'm not totally sure I like the idea of closing one half of Murrow Boulevard. However, this may be the best or only way to go to develop the eastern track of the greenway. It is true that the boulevard is currently underused. As the DT population increases, so will the traffic. It is vital that city planners keep this in mind and make sure adequate streets and highways are developed to meet this increasing demand. While it is exciting to see all the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Elm St., we can not let this become a problem for DT and drive people away.
