  1. Hello Everyone. I have been lurking on this board for a bit and I am hoping you guys can give me some advice. My wife, my mother, my daughter, and I will be coming to Charleston in mid April to visit/scope out Charleston. We originally are native North Central Floridians and we currently live in Lexington Ky. Well, we are Southerners at heart and although Kentucky considers itself Southern, it just isn't for us. Kentucky is beautiful and the people are kind, but we are drawn back south.Plus, my wife is not down with the winters here. We really want to move someplace closer to the coast as well. We reaaalllllyyyy miss the food. We have always found ourselves drawn to South Carolina.

So, back to April....we are hoping you could help us with a few things:

1st: Can you advise us on a good public beach to visit? We want to walk the beach together and enjoy the late afternoon there.

2nd: Can you advise on a family friendly restaurant (preferably seafood) that you guys would consider a Charleston fixture? Any good local Barbecue joints we should try?

3rd: If you were only coming for a weekend, what sorts of off the beaten path things would you guys advise us on seeing? On the beaten path things?

4th: Can you offer up some advice on a reasonably priced hotel @$150.00 a night?

I really appreciate any thing you guys can offer up...and mods if you want to move this thread feel free.

    Thanks!

p.s we have visited Greenville already and the people on the Greenville board were very helpful. It was nice, but we want to be a bit closer to the coast.

I do not really eat much seafood but I've been told that Hyman's Seafood on Meeting street is the best. I believe what I've been told only because everytime I past the place when I'm in Charleston, the line is out the door and about a block down Meeting st. The website is http://www.hymanseafood.com/. I think Rachael Ray did a segment on Hyman's on her 40 dollars a day show.

  2. Drove down Lady the other day... The new "M Vista" looks great! I hope it does well. Anyone have an opening date? I'm sure The State will mention it, but I haven't seen anything yet.

I saw that also. Is that going to be M Cafe's second location DT or are they going to close the one on Sumter st?

  3. Did anyone hear that the Ravenel bridge may not hold its title much longer as the longest cable stayed bridge in N. America? From what I saw on the news, a bridge is bring constructed in either Lousiana or Arkansas (I forgot which one) that will span a little longer than Charleston's.

  4. How soon we forget. It's going to be a 200-home neighborhood that follows the Richland County 20/20 plan. It was annexed into the city at the request of the developers. It was owned by these farmers who got out of farming but wanted it developed tastefully.

Thanks. Although I think it's a weird place for a neighborhood (hopefully it's not a subdivision). I hope there's some retail in store for the area though.

  5. Any news on why the land is being cleared on Garner's Ferry road near/on the old dairy farm in front of Bi-Lo. If I'm not mistaken it seems that I heard a while back that there was going to be some type of lifestyle center there.

  6. Layaway is still a good idea. It's not as popular as it used to be, but the stores where it's still offered make a lot of money off of it.

It's not always at the downscale stores either. I placed the last watch I bought at Fink's Jewelers on layaway, primarily because I didn't want to pay interest and didn't need it immediately.

No interest is why layways are always a better choice. However, we should stay on topic. Hopefully someone will answer the question that I posted on yesterday.

  7. Very cool but I wish they (Columbia Chamber of Commerce) would use better vantage points when taking pics of Columbia's skyline. Driving from West Columbia (a little before the Jarvis Klapman bridge), one is able to see the entire city skyline (including the state capitol and the BOA building) which would be a better pic of the city as a whole (IMO).

NICE! I'm glad there's someone in on UP such as yourself that actually gives "REAL" restaurant reports. I'm not the type of person to just walk in a restaurant that I'm not familiar with so your reports sort of bring the actual restaurant to me.

Also, it looks like the male counterpart of Racheal Ray has been discovered here on UP. :D

  9. I'm actually ok with Five Points not having strict design guidelines. As much as I love the Vista, its buildings are starting to look more and more identical. Five Points can maintain its unique character more effecitvely by not having the same look on every building. Perhaps some broad design guideline would be appropriate- something that encourages mixed use rather than another Food Lion (because right now, that could easily happen again)... but not something that controls texture and appearance.

My thoughts exactly. I've always liked the Vista a lot better than Five points but I too have noticed that the Vista's buildings look too much alike. Once this new project is built and five points' streetscape is 100% finished, I think the Vista will come seconhand to Five Points in my book. Hek, Five Points is already starting to look good with what they've done so far with the streetscaping.

  10. I think Five Points is already seeing the fruits of the revitalization. Five Points has never hurt for business, but I ate lunch there yesterday and the area was absolutely PACKED. There were literally thousands of people down there and it was just a typical day, there was nothing special going on. I know it isn't scientific, but Columbia just seems alot more crowded in recent years - especially the Vista and Five Points. Has anyone else noticed this?

I sure have. All over Columbia I ride around and say to myself "Where do all of these people come from?".

  11. I think Atlanta could solve part of the problem if it's leaders aimed for housing ITP that is more affordable. I'm sure there are plenty of young college grads as well as other working to middle class individuals that would love in town living. However, it's very easy to give up the 1500 sq. ft. one bedroom condo in Atlantic Station for a 3000 sq. ft. three bedroom home in the burbs for the same price.

Providing less expensive housing options in the city would help ease a lot of Atlanta's gridlock. Affordable housing may also be a way to save the city (or metro area) some money as it COULD eliminate the need for the expansion of the rail system.
