  1. Mmmm. I had some Nile food at the vegetarian festival. I'd love to actually stop buy and eat with my hands.
  2. No... more... Starbucks..... GASP.
  3. Oh, and I went to KUBA KUBA yesterday, as well. Delicious as usual. I tried one of the specials off the menu, medium rare tuna topped with tropical fruit w/ beans, rice, and asparagus. It was all fantabulous, although the beans and rice were't exceptionally flavorful. The empanadillas (sp?) were delicious as ususal, both meat and veggie, the black bean soup rocked the house, the tostones kicked buttocks, and then some. On a few negative points, the waitress was selectively rude sometimes (impatient), and the gazpacho's flavor was too acidic for most people at the table... but it was taken off the bill. And of course, the meal ended with tres leche cake, both vanilla and chocolate. If anyone has a sweet tooth, and has never tried the Tres Leche Cake at KUBA KUBA, then you haven't lived. We also tried some pineapple upside down cake, which was decent, but paled in comparison to the tres leche.
  4. burt, I visited The White Dog two days ago, and it's still open and not even close to being sold apparently. Barry Pruitt is trying to sell the entire building for 750,000 or so. Even if the restaurant alone is sold, I was told that it more than likely would remain in operation.
  5. On a slightly interesting side note, I learned during my transfer orientation the other day that VCU is guaranteed NOT to have a football team for the next four years AT LEAST. Whoo!
  6. Wow, according to Style... Dogwood is certainly gone. Now where do I go out for me belated birthday? Not going to Blackfinn@!
  7. I guess I did sleep too soon. I even had friends who offered to treat me to Mamma Zu, but I was asleep when they called.
  8. No *BLEEP*ing way!!! What is it with it and Fan restaurants closing their doors this week? Highly acclaimed Fan restaurants at that. I had only been to The White Dog, but it always held a place in my heart since I tried it... and it held a place in my pocket, too. I'll always sport my White Dog handkerchief to pay tribute.
  9. On this note, I was actually planning on going to this restaurant yesterday (my birthday). THis news is disheartening and ruined my plans. After work, I spent my entire birthday asleep. See, the interesting thing is that, nobody really cared about the cleanliness. Several nights a week, the venue was packed to the brim with its regulars seeing shows. The Raygun wasn't going downhill in terms of anything noticable when it closed its doors, and that surprised everybody.
  10. I explicitly remember sitting against the wall at a show at the Nanci Raygun, and just relaxing there... me and about 30 cockroaches. It was pretty gross, but it could churn out some decent vegan food. It was pretty much a hipster hangout like many West Grace places, but the priority seemed to just be in staying financially aloft instead of amenities.
  11. Unfortuantely, there is still nothing nearly as great as the Nanci Raygun was for the music community. The Hyperlink Cafe, Gallery 5, and house shows have tried to help fill this niche in the scene, but with nowhere near the success. It's such a shame. It's been 10 months since it shut its doors, and has no signs of reopening... not even with a new name.
  12. In recent dining news on the Aaron front, I had Mamma Zu food three times this week. Had the rockfish on friday night, and it was the first time I"ve ever finished an entire meal there. Also tried their zuppa di pesce and veal marsala. Both delicious. Saturday I order two red and two white pizzas. Delicious huh? Well today I went to the Crossroads Coffeehouse with a friend, and I saw that one of their house coffees was.... Mamma Zu blend (?!)... their darkest roast. WHat the heck? Does anyone else's life oddly revolve around the Richmond dining scene in a strange, latent way?
  13. Is the implication that Richmond barely suffered in relativity during the Depression?
  14. The accident was on interstate 64 in West Virginia. The three of them were headed back to Richmond. http://www.wvva.com/News/index.php?ID=13625
  15. Wow. Unbelievable. The Richmond music scene just lost another artist to bad circumstances. Ben Hutson, his girlfriend Cayce, and his friend Joe all lost their lives in a fatal car accident while on tour yesterday. I wasn't incredibly close to them, but I did hang out with Ben from time to time... last saw him at the Inquisition Reunion Show May 19th. A friend called me last night to inform me of their passing, and I woke up thinking it was merely a bad dream. It's so unbelievably disheartening.
  16. Oh, yeah, I saw the article, burt,... it' seems pretty odd that they would state that they want to directly compete with the classic Richmond five-diamond tea room at The Jefferson! But, remember, the old World Cup is now Crossroads Coffee which actually just had its grand opening Wednesday or Thursday. It didn't seem to be in full-service though On a side note, tonight I 'dined' at the vegan hipster classic, Panda Veg, on West Grace Street. I've been there MANY times before and am fairly aware of its declining and inconsistent quality of the food.... but tonight was inexcusably HORRIBLE. I've honestly NOT had a meal this crappy in ages. We asked for extra spicy 'mock orange chicken'... something I've thoroughly enjoyed in the past. It came completely unspicy, and the mock meat was tougher than frozen beef jerky. I would have loved to have sent it back to the kitchen, but I doubt that it would hvae mattered considering that Panda Veg has declined to a decrepit state since they know they'll always get business from college kids and "hipsters" anyway. I mean, the 'orange' sauce probably consists of ketchup and a mixture of artificial flavorings. Should have walked a few paces on the next block and gone to Edo's Squid.
  17. Oh yeah, sorry. I forgot to tell you guys about my autobiographical film I'm working on. Where exactly are Tredegar and Texas "Beach"es?
  18. New interesting article on Richmond.com about the staff's favorite dishes from Richmond restaurants. I find it odd how many times Sticky Rice appears on people's lists considering the negative reports I've heard from friends. Glad to see that some folks share my favorites like Kuba Kuba and Mamma Zu. http://www.richmond.com/dining/output.aspx...&position=3
  19. I guess that sounds pretty 'chic.' I'm glad to see that their demographic isn't 30+, but I don't like how they seem to pretentious insult Richmond for self-promotion (on the infusion website). Also, in that same Short Order article of Style, I was curious as to what was meant by: "And after a slight dust-up over a recent article, it
  20. I'm certainly glad to see the weekly ratings that Style Weekly gives Richmond be very positive in the past weeks. On another note, I'm tired of being called 'BP'.... you guys can just call me 'Aaron' (my genuine first name) from now on.
  21. What, cam?! Those pictures are of Richmond?! \ Beautiful
  22. Yeah, I found out that the chef's mom apparently makes all the desserts herself. It's insanely coincidental that you should mention Kuba Kuba wedding cake thing, because the night before last, I had a dream where I was planning a wedding reception for a friend of mine. In the dream, I called Kuba Kuba and had them make a customized layered Tres Leche Cake! You know you're addicted when you're having dreams about it! Was the groom's cake at your wedding layered or just like the regular whole cake?
  23. Ma Musu's is unfortunately the only of the restaurants you listed that I have tried. It was pretty decent though... buffet style where you pay by the weight. Quick question for anyone though: Why is the Tres Leche Cake at Kuba Kuba so ridiculously good??!?!?!?!? ANyone else a huge fan? I often go there just to get a slice in a carryout box!
  24. Wow. You got the hook-ups for views, eh? Do you or anyone else know where a common man such as myself would e able to find a great place in Richmond to get high views to take pictures from.
