  1. I was just about to mention Fifi's on here. One of the servers, a trainer none the less is just... "aight." However, ask for Justin, he's very good. The food is great and so is their beer selection. If you've not tried "Beelzebuth" before, I highly recommend it. It's a 13% ABV blonde ale that's great. Sadly they only have left of what they ordered and will not continue... unless more people like me ask for it. So if you're there and want a good time, ask for Beelzebuth!

i've been to fifi's three times, twice for breakfast and once for dinner. FANTASTIC dinner salads ... and top-notch service. the only problem i've had so far is inconsistency in pricing from menu to tab. and they have a couple of different breakfast menus that have conflicting prices ... like one has every breakfast side priced at $1.50, so i ordered a side of grits. out comes a whole bowl, along with the fruit bowl and everything else. then i was charged something like $3.50 -- for a bowl that wasn't listed on that day's menu but on the next breakfast menu i saw.

so my lesson was: i definitely enjoy my food there, and definitely check my tab before i pay!

  2. I didnt see the big screen tv.

The front courtyard would look dramatic when they put a giant Xmas tree there.

saturday night i walked inside, and it's a nice area to walk around, too. the escelators to the second floor reminded me of citywalk. it's a shame someone already smashed the glass of one.

  3. The "schedule" on the website also says grand opening 9-15-2006. can't believe we all missed it!

there's some benefit poster around town that lists the plaza as its venue from what i recall. i think i saw it at mills market.

  4. demolition has begun! i noticed this a.m. the brick wall in front of the lumberyard is gone! and there are myriad she-cans. :)

  5. ...In front of the moving truck is the grease trap that gibby loves.

haha! i looked for that thing and didn't know what i was lookin for! now i feel like i have a treasure map for tomorrow's walk :-)

  6. just curious, but what do the numbers spraypainted next to "demo" mean on the buildings? i noticed most of them were the same until the big antiques warehouse. are they block numbers?

  7. I was only there a couple of times but I remember jazz and swing.

It was very high end and I think the wine cellar, at the time, was the largest (or among the largest) in the Orlando area. This was in the mid-'90s.... it wasn't downtown though; it was in Longwood at 434 and I-4, in the Jacobson's shopping plaza.

It was a long drive from downtown, but worth it... and they had a *great* bar. Very clubby and masculine, with lots of mahoghany. We need something like that downtown.

i remember the advertisements for it and somehow recall it as a place magic players went to hang out?

have you been to the oak room downton? pretty nice...

in regards to orlando cuisine, i today had lunch a new little hawaiian/oriental mart on fairbanks in winter park. it's between wymore and edgewater in the same strip mall as the sole proprietorships that serve mediterranean food and the winter park deli (owned by asians who make delicious subs). what a nice combination for a suburb that i'd also welcome downtown!

  8. Well, here is something bolder:

...Those couple of blocks is more than enough land to hold both an arena with the front facing the OC Courthouse and then a huge parking garage facing Colonial...

    i like that idea!

but even right now colonial at rush-hour is horrible, and it seems like colonial needs to be widened to at least six lanes (is that possible? would require lots of tearing down ... and would take up some of that orlando sentinel land ... and the 7-11...)

how could we handle the traffic flow problem any big new development facing colonial could create?

  9. That's a good question. I foresee about another 2-2.5 years. I think it will take the time for the current slew of towers to fill in.

geez louise! can't we employ time lapse here for my field of dreams? "if you build it, they will come [in 2-2.5 years]" does not do the trick for me!

  10. Our Wolfgang Puck in Downtown Disney isn't as good as it used to be prior to Levy Foods takeover of that location. I could definitely go for a WP downtown so long as it is owned by Wolfgang Puck. Hell, even a Woflgang Puck Express somewhere near SunTrust (or in that food court going inside).

how long do you predict it will take for downtown to be busy enough to be able to support more places staying open on the weekends? since i work in winter park but live downtown, my interest is in places i can go on when i'm walking around town on saturdays and sundays.

  11. quick question to anyone who lives downtown. there are tons of renovations around my neighborhood (lake lawsona historic district), and i've gotten a flat tire every month this year because of nails! has anyone else had to deal with this from the downtown construction?

i'm not too bummed out because goodyear on bumby gives insurance with its tires, but i'm just curious if i have really bad luck or this is commonplace...

  12. Are you talking about the City Market Cafe [sic] (old Lake Eola Yacht Club)

i ate at the market street cafe for the first time last weekend. i had an eight eggwhite omlet with fresh broccoli, tomatoes and peppers (held the mushrooms), which was tasty. it came with wheat toast, which came dry with butter on the side, and grits (butter on the side). left the grits until last -- a mistake because they'd hardened into a nice, hard clump by that time.

overall, everything was yummy ... and the coffe mugs are actually the tall/late versions, which was a fun switch. total damage was $9. i think i'll stick with cityside cafe because it's cheaper, but it'll be good for when i want an a/c break during my sunday morning walk.

  13. late at night, heading westbound on i-4 at aroud princeton, vue looks like an anglerfish with the crane dangling above all of the floors of lights. i love it!

  14. It's really beginning to assert itself on the skyline now.

driving along i-4 at night last night, there seemed to be a little yellow light in ever room of the vue -- lit up like crazy and very good lookin!

^graffiti from -end, warning local business that ugly is worth taking up land, perhaps?

speaking of -end, does anyone know who that was? seems that most of the "little messages" around town are spraypainted over now.

  16. What's so historic about Sanford?

ok ... well, not so much any more.

let's just focus on orlando sanford airport folks wanting to get down to the attractions

  17. It would be even better if rail line went further north to the Heathrow Office park area. I live in College Park and work up in Heathrow and I would take the rail if it existed.

wouldn't it also be helpful to extend it closer to orlando sanford airport for those coming in from that side of town? get historic sanford (my good old hometown) into the mix!
