  1. although not right downtown, there's a cute & tasty little cafe over on virginia called bikes, beans and bordeaux that i've come to really enjoy. it's in the strip mall diagonal from the 7-eleven adjacent to stardust (east of the park ave cds building). personally, i like the veggie/hummus sandwich and iced coffee. oh, and the jelly bellies for dessert.

  2. yesterday, frankieb96 and I went to cool blue burrito at the plaza for lunch... i had a chicken bowl and he had a steak burrito... food was 'meh' nothing spectacular... and i think that plus 2 drinks ended up being about $18... i would have rather gone to urban flats and had 2 flats for about that price

place was empty...but we went after lunch rush...1-2pm

bring on more restaurant and retail at the plaza!

tomorrow, a group of us will be trying out Ethos Vegan restaurant on Orange...not a vegan myself...so we will see how this goes!

i'm not vegan, either, but i found the shepard's pie and dessert at ethos delicious!

  3. got to try ceviche and the dessert lady last night. in my mind, ceviche blows away cafe tu tu tango. my favorites were the filet w/ blue cheese and the olives. and the dessert lady was a true treat (hurray for cinnamon ice cream on pecan pie!)

in some unfortunate dt news, yesterday was the last of b&s. best coffee, tea, conversation with regulars, and owner. i'm sad to see it go.

  4. I like O'Naturals. I had Udon with teriyaki a week ago and it was nice to sit outside and enjoy some fresh air while not being directly on a sidewalk.

I tried Bento tonight. 2.22 for 2 beers and 2.22 for sushi rolls. The rice was overcooked, which is exactly the opposite of what I experienced the one time I went to Ichiban. Rice being overcooked by a rice machine means that the person making it put too much water in it. It's really simple. You measure the rice and fill to the corresponding line with water. The place was packed and I waited about 30 minutes to order, which is a lot considering they are cafeteria style and I had to stand the whole time. Considering the special that ran tonight and it was their formal grand opening, I can definitely overlook the wait. Once my order was placed, though, the sushi came out within 5 minutes. The spicy tuna, which is one of my favorites, was really bad. It was a tuna roll with a spicy sauce added on top. If you like spicy tuna, Bikkuri on Colonial, is good and my favorite is Ran Getsu on I-drive. Bikkuri uses a Thai style spicy hot peanut oil mixed with the tuna. The Ran Getsu version uses wasabi and a small amount of mayo mixed with tuna. The California roll, which really isn't sushi, had too much roe on top. The other rolls that I had were average. I assume the nigiri would be fine (if they don't overcook the rice). I will go back and try a rice bowl (probably the bulgogi since my favorite Korean place closed over a year ago) and maybe some Udon. I was not impressed my first time out, but I'm part Japanese, so I'm very particular about my sushi.

i ate there that same night, and experienced the same thing with the spicy tuna. i, too, got a side of rice that was overdone. i'm part japanese, too, and i agree about the importance of rice. i am very lucky to live right across from shin. its owner lives here, too, and is a hardcore sushi man. he's also a japanese fisherman, which earns him respect in my book (i work for a fishing magazine.)

oh yeah, speaking of 801, i was pleasantly pleased last night by a mediterranean salad i got at daily grind unwind. fresh and delicious, with the right amounts of feta, olives and red onion ... three things that really make a good greek salad.

  5. Sunset Place in Miami has an AMC and only garage parking. They do validate parking there (reduces it to $1). The theatre gets tremendous business, although the Falls (surface parking) and the Grove (pay garage) are relatively nearby.
Thanks for the information. I was already aware of the Altamonte AMC garage (racked up quite a few MovieWatcher points there with my parents) and meant to ask specifically about fee-based garages. You certainly addressed my concern. Parking validation to $1 is better than nothing, and I hope that AMC is planning to do the at least the same for this location.
  6. Anyone else see the quote from Cameron Kuhn in the OBJ that AMC will be open by January 25th?
Does AMC have any other theaters in parking garage-serviced buildings? One thing I appreciate about going to the movies at Pointe Orlando is that it validates parking when you see a movie there. And I think this will be instrumental to getting people to change their theater-going behaviors to this downtown location . . . where you have options of PTP's and city garages and limited unmetered street parking after 7 pm, much of which vanishes due to various special events and street closings. Without validation, I'm concerned about its ability to draw customers away from Premiere Cinemas at Fashion Square and Winter Park Village, both of which offer free parking.

I know this is a downtown theater being built for downtown residents to walk to, but let's be real for a second . . . People from as close as Thornton Park and Uptown are not inclined to walk the 1 mile there in cool weather conditions like we had earlier this week to catch a movie. And needless to say, I don't see it happening in 95-degree summer heat, either. When it comes to a five-minute car ride to a theater with free parking at Fashion Square or a $5 parking alternative downtown, we know what the choice will be.

  7. Yesterday they poly-urathaned the bricks on the south side of Church, took down the paper covering the old Two Jays site, looks like retail going in, probably Cheyenne merchandise, and I understand Brick and Fire will be open this weekend.

it's not going to be buffalo trader's co with five-cent candy sticks, is it?

  8. wow . . . this is the saddest news of my day. the lady at gelatone makes the best paninis with extreme attention to detail, and she is so nice! and they just introduced the frozen yogurt . . . i don't get it. their paninis are five-times better than those at armoa. god, if i didn't have plans at the celt for lunch today, i would definitely be there. this might be worth venturing there on my day off tomorrow just to tell them goodbye. :-(

  9. The answer to this question is the FRA. Basically if a train crosses a highway crossing and it is not signalized with crossing arms that meet certain federal requirements, then the train, and it does not matter what type, must blow it's horn to let traffic know that it is coming.

In order for the commuter trains to be exempt from the requirement to have to blow their horns, all of the grade crossings would have to be upgraded to meet the requirements for low noise. It costs more money.

interesting, monsoon. thank you for the information.

so that means i must hear southbound trains honking their horns in my area at marks st. (but not at orange ave. because of grade crossings). i probably never notice the northbound trains because the horns aren't in my direction. i wonder if this plan below includes a grade crossing upgrade at marks street . . .

. . .probably not. but i did watch cxs switch out wooden railroad ties last night for a few hours. to me, track safety is the most important investment. that crazy machine assembly line to remove and replace spike and plates went on and on . . . it was fascinating maintenance work!

  10. here's a question for y'all: what will determine when these commuter trains honk their horns? will they have to?

i live right along the orange ave-area rails (literally, about . . . 30 yards away), and i've noticed that the freight and amtrak trains usually honk their horns at about the same place--if they honk. (it seems to be hit or miss.) i've always been curious as to what signals the engineers to honk their horns. are there signs along the rails (perhaps before certain, high-trafficked intersections) that require it? and why don't some trains honk?

although my cat comes in off the balcony long before i even notice the slight rumble, i barely notice the trains or horns anymore (thank goodness for double-paned glass). yet i'm curious what kind of increased honking this will bring to the areas along the rails, or if commuter rails have a different protocol.

p.s. i bought this place watching the trains go by, and i am not complaining. i've loved trains since i took my first train ride as a kid from sanford to deland to visit the grandparents!

  11. does anyone know what happened at roho that required "closed until further notice?"

in other good food news, i am SO GLAD to have:

    (1) delicious steamed crab legs right by work at cityfish

    (2) delightfully tart and spicy ceviche at shin sushi

    (3) darn crispy "snack attack" veggie chips at newly open infusion tea in urban think (and the salads and chili are good, too!)

  12. oh man, i flew into newark the night that prudential center opened in october . . . i think bon jovi was performing, and the whole area was a madhouse. if our bright waffle house is that crazy during opening night, that would be exciting!

  13. when was Uno's downtown and where was it?

back when i was in high school/college & interning downtown in the early-mid-90s. with olive garden, howl at the moon, jungle jim's, sharper image, brookstone, etc. nice times. :-)

  14. I'd do anything to get a job downtown, just for the oppertunity to ride my bike to work.

i've been looking forward to cooler weather all year just so i can ride my bike to work . . . i've only lived and worked in the cbd since april  i'm thinking maybe in november it will be cool enough. but then how will i get my morning snacks from b&s and ride my bike? man, i have to come up with a plan.

  15. has anyone been to the harp? i've been to the celt quite a few times, and it's fantastic! then when i leave, it seems that the harp servers are always standing outside with puppy dog eyes, waiting for folks to come in. the harp just looks so expensive . . . and empty. is it worth the money?

  16. Before I go on about Boston City Hall I want to know if peopl think it is appropriate here. I think there is some room for discussion of it since it is a good example of a major signature building, but it is also very much not in Orlando.

ohhh . . . my favorite place to stand and watch boston b-boys and far enough away to not be asked for money.

i think one of the good things about that area is the plaza-like nature of it. will we ever enough open space in downtown orlando to create that type of atmosphere?

  17. Has anyone tried out Shin Restaurant up on north Orange next to Citrus?

quite regularly (weekly), and it's delicious. i had to get used to asking for no mayo (since it's on almost everything), but it's very fresh. i've settled on my favorites:

rainbow roll (snow crab, avocado, cucumber, smelt roe, mayo, sesame seeds, topped w/ tuna, salmon, white tuna, avocado, shrimp, flying fish roe) $10

thin slices of ny steak rolled w/sc allions, asparagus, teriyaki style $8

    steamed brown rice $3

    edamame $4

  18. i just walked by the old coffeehouse of thronton park and was delighted to see a new sign in the window, "aroma coffee and wine bar." i popped my head in, and the guys said they'll be opening sometime next week at 7 a.m.

coffees, espressos, wines, and fancy foods (one that popped off the menu was "mozzarella and prosciutto") yum!

  19. Last night was their grand opening. Ms. Mulvaney (didn't get her first name) said the restaurant would open soon. There was no fish n chips on the bar side menu since the Harp will be a fish establishment. I had a roast beef sandwich with onions and cheese and at first glance, I thought it was going to be dried out beef. Was I surprised. That sandwich (The Dubliner) was delicious. Large flat screens in a couple of places. They had SKY TV on with the latest soccer news from the UK. I really didn't know there were that many soccer teams. I can just imagine if the US plays Ireland in the World Cup. The Irish flags waving outside and screams toward The Clubhouse where the US flags would be waving back at them.

i had the beef and mushroom pie at the celt tonight . . . and it was fantastic! also, soccer on the large flat screen. this will certainly become my place to go for soccer instead of having to squeeze into fiddler's or make the drive to best of british down on i-drive. and not only was the food fantastic, but they really did a nice job with the finishing touches on the place itself. even the ceiling is pretty!

  20. Funny how these areas don't wanna be associated with Sanford. Is Sanford that bad of a city?

having lived there the first 20 years of my life, i'd say it's a "worn" city. but it's still home to me, so when i go there, i see how far it's come as opposed to what it's lacking.

  21. H&M? You don't mean H&M the clothing retailer do you?

Also --- has anyone actually confirmed that Rave will be operating the theaters? I know (Sentinel theater critic) Roger Moore blogged about that rumor in early July, but now I see this in Mike Thomas' blog:

"Also, anyone know what happened to the downtown theaters at Solaire? Word has it that the theater companies are skeptical because there isn
