  1. Norfolk and Dulles airports should merge - call the new city "Raleigh, Virginia." Just so long as the problems of Isle of Wight stay in Franklin.
  2. Norfolk will merge with Virginia Beach.
  3. As a resident of Portsmouth, I don't think we should do anything without first having a Virginia Beach voter referendum.
  4. Harbor Vista at Crawford Street Apartments
  5. The brewery is rumored to be Starr Hill
  6. I like Whole Foods coming to the area, but I wouldn't cut down a single tree for the rest of this project. I'm certain Newport News has enough strip malls and fitness centers already. I like the surround of trees! Let's hide this from Jefferson Avenue and Jefferson Avenue from it.
  7. I agree. It would be nice to see some renderings of their ideas - their multiple ideas. The convention center image does look like a collection of sticks. It could just be a poor drawing but it makes me nervous. I do like the waterside location and actually appreciate that it's slightly disconnected from the rest of downtown. It's not going to ruin the character of the neighborhood - since their is none there. That's good. Convention centers are dead zones so might as well put it in a dead zone.
  8. Overly concerned with size? Try living in any bigger downtown for a while. It doesn't count to merely visit. Google Maps doesn't count either! If you are like me, you will appreciate Norfolk a little more when you return. Though, when you return it will be a little bigger. Now, about your question of growth. I think light rail will help with downtown's appeal and if you can up the appeal in any way you can grow. Between downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth we're just at the begining of a great period of collective growth in my opinion. The appeal for both places is on the rise. Whether bigger or not, it's definately more improved than I've ever seen it in my lifetime. Something really needs to be done about Waterside, though. Yikes! That's just awful nowadays.
  9. You really should consider the nature of this promo video. I bet you can make a Norfolk promo look just as appealing. With careful editing any hole in the wall can look sexy. It's all a matter of perspective too. I guarantee you nobody in Boston is drooling over this Baltimore video. haha! What does this say about Norfolk? I would guess that most of us who frequent this site already wants Norfolk to have a bigger and busier downtown. I certainly do. But really, I've been to Baltimore plenty of times ......and Washington DC is closer! Sorry Baltimore. You're pretty darn cool too! Baltimore doesn't have Virginia Beach kicking its you-know-what just next door either. That being said, I'm glad we have Virginia Beach so close. I love the beach! In Virginia I've noticed a real city vs. country tug of war that I didn't see while living in Philly. People in Philly are city folks. People in Hampon Roads are a mix. Some of us are country folk. Some of us are city folk. If we were all city folk we wouldn't even be on this site and we'd never complain about the size of our cities. Our cities would be huge! But we have a lot of country folk here who simply don't like cities. I'd like to see a population count based on this country vs. city assumption. Sadly, I'm guessing very few of us 1.7 million HR residents are actually city minded.
  10. Holiday Inn - architecture that will not be missed!
  11. Yes, a very low budget review indeed, scm, but I can appreciate that! I'm not very good at articulating such things either, so here's my equally low budget review! I must say, the food is at Longboards is awesome! I got the tuna plate lunch during my first visit last weekend. It was absolutely delicious, totally satisfying, and ridiculously inexpensive at $7.50. I plan on telling the world and going back often. I'm too much of a family man these days to have much of an opinion about the bar. I got a Sam Adams that paired quite nicely with the tuna, but I don't suppose that addresses the quality of the bar much. I agree it's a nice addition to High Street, and encourage you to go if you want a fabulous, yet affordable meal in a laid back environment. Next time, I'll try Still. I may or may not report.
