I have to say, the other day as I was passing through downtown on I-196, the tower 25 crane was suspended over the freeway and due to the recent news of falling cranes I had to say a little prayer as I passed under it.

 Just because out of all the tower cranes operating in the US/World, 3 have come down and made news doesn't mean we need to fear for our lives when near one. Sure they should be inspected and meet saftey criteria, but seriously I doubt anyone is any danger.

In 2006 about 117 people a day died in car accidents in the US.. out of all the things that may kill me in the next 24 hours, a tower crane is at the bottom of the list. And I plan on being downtown a lot this weekend. ^_^

Edit: Was always told to cite my sources: http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx

The crane in Detroit wasn't a tower crane and the bridge the crane was setting on collapsed, not the crane.

As for the NYC Crane collaspe, well that was criminal neglect by the inspections office. Not even going out to check on the cranes when people called and complain.

Truest Me, I'm not really this alarmist.

I found it odd though that three crane accidents happen within a realatively short period of time happen like this though.
