HTFD MAYORAL CANDIDATES FORUM THURSDAY

Recommended Posts

For anyone interested, a mayoral Candidates Forum will be held Thursday, 7-12-07 at 6PM at St. Augustine's Church, 10 Campfield Ave in Htfd's southend. Apparently all announced candidates have committed to attend. Should be interesting if it is as well attended as the last one at the Library.

It is sponsored by the Maple Avenue/Barry Square NRZ and the Southend NRZ

Probably about 100 people. All mayoral candidates attended and it was somewhat tedious with such a large cast of characters answering questions, Perez again had his signwavers present cheering him on, but it was interesting to watch the reaction of the crowd, most of whom were not applauding for him. He took a couple hits on his "truthfulness" when people asked him budget questions and his answers didn't correlate to what the budget documents show. Such as his claim that 80 new police officers will be hired this year, when only 20 are budgeted according to his budget book. is answers were all scripted as were his opening and closing statements, that he read directly from the binder in front of him. You would think after 6 years in office he could speak to his accomplishments without notes. Art Feltman , although well prepared with facts, once again comes across as a whining child hell bent on taking Perez down . Minnie appeared very nervous for some reason and did not perform well. DeJesus once again did well, although his time is not now, but he is definitely someone to watch for the future. Barrow's I think is just irrelevant and has no real message to get out, almost seems like he threw his name in when it was popular, and now he is just waiting to get out of the race. Rev. Smith is passionate about her message, but definitely not mayoral and took off on a couple tirades during her comments.McCauley once again seemed impressive and spoke with candor rather than the "politically correct" answers and had a few good ideas he mentioned for changes in public safety and the way the city does business. He also seemed to get the best audience responses, how that translates into votes in November will be the question. Matthews just doesn't seem genuine in his ideas and comments and almost seems to be the typical politician, saying what he thinks the people want to hear. As an example, when McCauley mentioned that he would continue to do his nightly public access call in show so people could keep in touch with him, Matthews answered the same saying he would do a public access show weekly.

It should be interesting after the conventions when the numbers are reduced to see some real debate begin. The Republicans convention is tomorrow night and I think the Democrats were scheduled for Thursday, but I heard they may have moved theirs to Wednesday also, not sure though.
