I went to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando last year. Nice place, definitely going to be tough competition for Atlanta. Some other impressive bowl sites in the running as well. As the article mentions, this would likely lead to a second bowl game in Atlanta and the national championship ever 5th year.

Peach can bid for slot in BCS

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl could become part of the Bowl Championship Series, and Atlanta could get a second bowl if it does.

Peach Bowl officials received a letter Wednesday from BCS coordinator Mike Tranghese asking if they would be interested in bidding for the proposed fifth BCS bowl game.

"We're certainly going to throw our hat in the ring," said Peach Bowl president Gary Stokan.

The Peach Bowl and Atlanta are expected to compete with Orlando (Capital One), Jacksonville (Gator), Dallas (Cotton), Houston (Houston), San Antonio (Alamo) and San Diego (Holiday) for the BCS game. The Capital One is generally regarded as the frontrunner. All bowls under consideration have until Thursday to respond.

In February, Division I-A college presidents decided to add a fifth BCS bowl at the end of the 2006 season to the current four: Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose. The fifth BCS bowl likely would pit the Big East champion against an at-large team and host the national championship game every fifth year.

If the Peach becomes part of the BCS, the Atlanta Sports Council is proposing an additional bowl game to fill its current role of a matchup between SEC and ACC teams. It probably would be played in the last few days of December, also in the Georgia Dome, and another title sponsor would be needed.

Atlanta would join Orlando, Phoenix and New Orleans as cities with two bowl games.

Stokan said the Conference Commissioners Association would review the applicants at a meeting in Phoenix on April 26, send out requests for proposals in May and probably make a decision by this fall.

The Peach is the No. 1 non-BCS bowl in attendance, fifth overall, and has sold out for seven straight years.
