Pedestrian commuting

I stumbled upon this and was pleasantly surprised. Apparently Pittsburgh ranks fairly high among US cities for the percentage of citizens who walk to work.

We're number 13, with about 10% of our commuters walking. It looks like this may be counting students, which would certainly explain it. I'd be curious to see the numbers if students were left out.

That list is counting cities over 100,000... so it's slightly misleading as most of the cities above Pittsburgh are true "college towns"... like Ann Arbor. Pittsburgh does have Oakland... which certainly helps our ranking... but Pittsburgh is so much more than the university district. Most of the major cities on that list have similar university areas as well.

Good points, Evergrey. It was nice, and not so surprising to me to see Pittsburgh ranked so high. Our mainstreets make this possible. During the big blizzard last week it was nice to walk to Donatelli's in Bloomfield and see the streets filled... made me laugh to hear suburban commuters at work several days later complaining about how they couldn't drive anywhere and had nothing to do.

Hopefully the number of walkers and cyclists will continue to grow.

Nice job on that list, Evergrey. Looks like we came out very well!

This makes me wonder about a comment someone made to me once. He was originally from the suburbs of Chicago and came here for college. He was living in Shadyside not far from Walnut Street. And he basically said he didn't think Pittsburgh was walkable enough for him.
