Tragically Officer Michael Briggs died today. Briggs, a Manchester police officer, was shot in the head yesterday morning responding to a call of gunfire. He remained in critical condition for a day and a half before passing this afternoon. The suspect was arrested yesterday evening in Boston, following a massive manhunt.

Briggs was 35 and leaves behind a wife and two children. This is the first time a city officer has died in the line of duty in more than 30 years.

This tragic incident is very likely to reignite fears that crime has grown out of control in the "inner city." The shooting occured just 10 blocks from the main drag, Elm Street.

We had an officer killed in the line of duty last year. I'm sure you will see a lot of Providence cops heading up north for the funeral. It's so sad that a guy devotes his life to protecting the city and ends up dead.
