KC ranks No. 5 for percentage of broadband users

The Kansas City area ranks No. 5 among 50 markets for the percentage of broadband Internet users in the fourth quarter, comScore Networks Inc. said Wednesday.

Forty-six percent of area Internet users used broadband connections in the fourth quarter, comScore Networks said in a written release. Fifty-four percent of area Internet users used narrowband, or dial-up, connections.

Metropolitan areas with higher broadband penetration may have more competition for users, which drives down the price and fosters greater market penetration, comScore Networks spokesman Graham Mudd said.

The San Diego area ranks No. 1 for broadband use, at 52 percent. Boston ranks No. 2 at 50 percent, and New York ranks No. 3 at 49 percent.

Nationally, 36 percent of online users accessed the Web through a high-speed connection in the fourth quarter, up from 34 percent in the third quarter.

Comcast Corp. leads the broadband market, providing access to about 19 percent of broadband users and 7 percent of all online users. SBC Communications Inc. provides access to 11 percent of broadband users and 6 percent of all online users.

AOL Time Warner Inc. leads the overall Internet service provider market, including broadband and narrowband, with a 28 percent share.

Based in Reston, Va., comScore Networks tracks the behavior of more than 1.5 million global Internet users.
