The North Ward is an interesting spot. There's quite an exchange going on between the established Italian community in the low-number streets and the more recent immigrants from Latin America. There are excellent places to get gelato along Bloomfield Ave. I also like the intensity of commercial activity down around Bloomfield Plaza (where Bloomfield Ave and Broadway intersect, just west of Broad Street). I saw at least one pic from that area in here.

Bloomfield Ave is an interesting drive (or bus ride via the 11 or 28 which you can catch at Newark Penn or the Bloomfield Ave station of the Newark City Subway). There's quite an array of people, land uses, and neighborhood types as you work your way from Newark out toward Montclair & beyond.

From the Newark Star-Ledger, celebrations in Newark's North Ward centered around a block party on Bloomfield Ave. Neighborhood restaurants provided free food to attendees (an estimated 500 pounds of sausage, 2400 hamburgers, 2000 hot dogs, and untold volumes of beer and soda).

The Star-Ledger had excellent photos in their print edition, but they're not online. :(
