A Tennessee company that supplies metal products to Hyundai will be Phenix City's initial foray into the automobile industry. H&L Metals Inc., based in Hendersonville, Tenn., plans to occupy a 4-acre site in the Phenix City Industrial Park on the city's southside. The company is expected to employ at least 20 people. Phenix City had been hoping to score a Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier to Kia's planned $1.2 billion assembly plant in West Point, Ga. Tier 1 suppliers can produce up to 900 jobs, while Tier 2 suppliers can mean 200-300 jobs for an area. The city has secured an option on a site north of the city in southern Lee County that has access to water, gas, rail lines and fiber optics. The site is part of the city's package to entice a large supplier for Kia to the area.
