Seems Atlanta may have a major league and minor league team if Greenville does not come to an agreement with their team.

County vies for AA spot in Braves' farm system

Discussions about bringing a minor league baseball team to Cherokee County are moving into the middle innings, and Commission Chairman Mike Byrd is eager to make the county a leading contender for a team.

But the outcome could hinge on whether Greenville, S.C., agrees to build a new stadium for the Braves minor league team that plays there, he said.

"They're still trying to sort out whether they're going to build a new stadium," Byrd said. "If they can't, they'll be looking to make a move."

If the Greenville Class AA club is ready to move, "We would be one of two or three places that would be strongly considered," Byrd said. "We're very excited about the opportunity and hope to hear in the next 60 days."

The Cherokee interest tracks a trend across Atlanta's northern suburbs of establishing performing arts and entertainment centers outside downtown Atlanta.
