I always liked South Boston, in the mid-late '90's I used to go up there once every few months for a Sunday drive from Hillsborough/Durham. Since 2000 I've probably only been up to S.B. two or three times though...I blame the end of the Sunday drive, at least for me...

Since nobody answered, if I'm remembering the area correctly (forgive me, I see towns in 10 states all year long) the Northbound side of 501 is similar in density to the Southbound Side. There is some sprawl there with suburban style shopping centers, but pretty much you have downtown, some old factories, and neighborhoods.
