Columbus's housing market is on fire

New homes are popping up everywhere in Columbus, in all different prices ranges. As fast as contractors can build them; they're sold. "New sales are up exponentially," says Dan Parker of Coldwell Banker's Kennon Parker Duncan and Key. He says new home sales in Columbus are up 25 percent just over the last year. Business is also booming in surrounding areas like Phenix City. But both realtors and builders alike will tell you, new homes aren't being built fast enough.

Based on Fort Benning's anticipated growth over the next seven years due to Base Realignment and Closure, area builders will need to produce 1,500 more homes a year than they are now. However, those numbers were predicted before Aflac announced it will expand and well before Kia announced it will build a new manufacturing plant in West Point.

Add it all together and many are predicting 3-thousand more homes will need to be built each year than what's going up now and that's just to keep up with demand.

Realtors say it is a strong sign the new housing market will in no way slow down.
