Why is Charleston not gay friendly?

The Arcade closed after my first year in Charleston. I never made it there . It seemed like such a fun and funky place and I heard great things about it. God knows I would have enjoyed an alternative to Dudleys/Pantheon and Patricks. I worked for the College in the office building next door while I was enrolled. COFC owned the building for years before demolishing it to expand the biz school. I used to hear anecdotally that the school was sick of explaining to visitors the reason for the building's pink hue because they had to explain that it was a gay bar! GASP.
