Actually I love freeways. Especially skylines from freeways.

If you hadn't said Ontario in the title, I woulda guessed that was LA. Wow! Isn't for the most part Canada less sprawled than America?

Canada learned from the U.S., and managed to control sprawl to some degree.

Toronto essentially stopped building highways within it's boundaries after 1971.

The problem is that the outlying areas (York Region, etc) did not, hence the 400, the 403, the 404, Plus the 407 (that's the toll road, right?)

401 is the QEW, correct? I want to research that road a bit -- it goes across Canada, right?

401 is not the QEW and does not go across Canada but it does go across Ontario. The highway that goes acrossed Canada is the Trans-Canada highway, the 401 forms part of the Trans-Canada highway through Ontario.

Wow, some of these freeways (like in the first photo) are really huge! Is there really enough traffic volume in Canada to fill this capacity?

Also, as it was mentioned above, these roads look well-kept. It is probebly very expensive to maintain such freeways - How is this expense fulfilled?

I've always understood the 401 to be the widest freeway (most number of lanes) in the world at the section in one of your photos.

From Windsor, Ontario to West of Toronto the 401 is a two lane highway. A very dangerous and deadly stretch of highway.

Wow, those Toronto-area freeways are monsters, and appear to be mostly at-grade (not even below or above). It's an interesting tour, indeed.

Yes the traffic volume is there otherwise they would not have been built. And yes they are very very expensive to maintain do to Ontario's cold winters and hot humid summers and the constant pounding they recieve, especially the 401. Most highways are toll free, but the newest(407) is tolled.

There is actually a few spots where it grows to 6 lanes along this route, also this section has seen numerous upgrades lately to improve safety.

I haven't been on the 401 going to Windsor for a few years, but it seemed liked construction was going on forever. Has it ended yet?
