Sears on State

Crain's Chicago Business ran an article on Aug. 29 about the State Street Sears store and how lousy sales are there. This brings to mind two questions. Do you think the Sears on State will remain open much longer? And if not, what would expect or like to see in it's place?

I'm sorry to hear Sears is faltering on State. That's such a cool store.

Maybe Target can take its place or something.

There's actually a huge mega-Target that they opened late last year not too far away from the State Street Sears in Printer's Row. A few of my friends were there almost obsessively but I never went. They even have a special escalator for your basket. Anyhow, I went to that Sears a few times during the Christmas season but I kept getting lost inside. That and their toy shop needs some work, it looks like an extra stock room. However the window display was nice...

But I've always bowed to Marshall Fields, the State Street store is probably the one place I wish I could be right at this moment.

Didn't this Sears open just a few years ago (2001) to great fanfare that Sears was returning to the city? What happened?

That store did open enthusiastically a few years ago, but since then the appeal of Sears nationally has dropped considerably, replaced by a resurgent JCPenney and what I like to call 'Target-lust' in the conciousness of its core market.
