Panel rejects library's landmark status

Although the Land Use and Zoning Board voted 6-1 to turn down Suzanne Jenkin's request, the city council will have an official vote at this Tuesday's meeting.

Those who would like to see the Atkins proposal for the Haydon Burns site survive, please attend this meeting or write to your local elected officials, in support of demolishing the Haydon Burns.

Hopefully the issue of polluted land wont be as big as an issue as it can be...

(It jsut me or does there seem to be alot of projects stalled/canceled due to environmental concerns)

Whew! I was really sweatin' that one. Thankfully the Land Use Zoning committee sees it our way, let's just hope that the rest of the city council does.

I agree jjoshjl. It does seem like an aweful lot of projects are hitting the wall because of environmental concerns. I guess it has a lot to do the unregulated industry that used to consume the DT.

Atkins is greatly encouraged by this decision and asks for your support at the next council meeting. There will be another public hearing regarding this matter on the 13th.

By the way, negotiations are progressing with JEDC.

let's just say that Atkins does win the whole Haydon Burns issue, do you guys think that there's a possibility they'll increase the size of the tower & all its amenity areas from the proposed drawings & plans prior to the whole issue?

I sure hope so. 5 stories overlooking the top of the 11E would be nice to offer some river views, that is if you don't mind staring at the "11E" spike. With that thought, maybe its best to keep the height the same.

I hope that the issue can be resolved quickly and that some develop will begin soon. I would like to see the northside starting to develop with the Haydon-Burns site.

I've been involved in a debate on www.taylorhardwick.com and our town will be in pretty bad shape if these people have they're way. The view over there is that no one even wants to come downtown, there's no urban condo market and that Atkins will fail, because they won't be able to land the theater or any retail shops.
