ProJo article about the city's new Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Program.

Streetscape improvements have begun on Broad Street and will take place on Wickenden Street, Olneyville Square, Chalkstone Avenue, Charles Street, Branch Avenue, Cranston Street and Atwells Avenue in the coming months. Area merchants will also be able to apply for grant money to perform facade improvements on their businesses.

The program is modeled after the Main Streets program that has been very successful in Boston and other areas of the country.

Also see this press release from the city about the Providence Shines program. Neighbourhood clean-up is taking place on Cranston Street today (oops, missed it), Manton Avenue will be getting cleaned on Wednesday, August 24th.

Providence Shines will make its way into the Chalkstone Boulevard and Elmwood Avenue commercial districts in the coming weeks.

Certainly sounds good, and can't hurt. All of those streets have areas that look somewhat bare and under-loved. Flowers and trees would be great.

Both Chalkstone Ave (not often discussed here) and Smith St have serious urbanism potential. If there was some good planning, those areas could really do well...
