America West adding S.F. nonstops

Boston Business Journal

America West Airlines is adding two nonstop flights, seven days a week, from Logan Airport to Los Angeles and San Francisco, Massport announced Tuesday.

The Los Angeles flights will start Oct. 26 and the San Francisco flights are scheduled to start next March 1.

The airline claims it is adding the flights because of growing customer demand for "affordable" nonstop flights to California. The company's last-minute business fares start at $299 each way.

Logan Airport currently offers seven daily flights to San Francisco and five daily flights to Los Angeles on American Airlines and United Airlines.

America West Airlines announced Monday that it will become the first low-fare carrier to operate nonstop transcontinental service from Los Angeles and San Francisco to New York and Boston.

Airline observers will be keeping a close eye on how the carrier does with the flights. Most discount airlines have positioned themselves as short-haul carriers, leaving coast-to-coast flights to the major carriers.

However, carriers such as Southwest have been increasing their routes to compete with the majors and grow their market share.

The new flights between Los Angeles and Boston and JFK will begin Oct. 26.

Flights between JFK and San Francisco will begin Dec. 19.

Flights between Boston and San Francisco will begin March 1.

America West's last-minute business fares start at $299 each way. Last-minute business fares on cross-country routes can be more than $1,200.

America West will use a 124-seat Airbus A319 aircraft for the flights.
