:offtopic:Ironically even though they took a buzzsaw to their LAX network (dropping over 15 destinations since the pandemic), AA still has more gates than any other carrier at LAX.  It's not really a slot situation at JFK either - for years AA had slots at JFK that were unused and AA management publicly admitted that they were forced to give up slots at JFK simply because they were unaware that they possessed them - in short, even when AA had the slots at JFK, they didn't know how to use them effectively.

The reality is that markets like LAX and NYC are filled with folks who actually care about the product, and that clientele is simply not AA's target market. As AA management has said publicly time and time again, the schedule is the product, and the company is not prepared to compete in markets where they might have to compete on product. International opportunities are out, markets like El Paso (a city that AA management continuously brings up) are now the cities where AA sees pathways to profitability and marketshare.

Things like seatback video entertainment really don't matter to a lot of people, but it does matter when competing in a high yielding market like NYC/WAS/LAX. I can't think of any reason why anyone who lives in NYC would actively choose to fly AA when Delta, JetBlue, and United offer a better product and schedule. It's not for nothing that United is spending billions and billions of dollars to add seatback entertainment to its domestic fleet.

AA has 28 gates at LAX and Delta has 28 (with codeshares) under the new configuration at LAX. Delta now has the most flights and passengers. Delta is lapping United and AA with terminal upgrades too at LGA, BOS (and SLC, DTW, MSP and ATL).

As a Delta loyalist, I love it.

I'm not familiar with how many flights a gate can handle per day. Does Delta taking most of the new Concourse A expansion allow for them to significantly expand their Charlotte operation from 34 flights daily? I'd love for them to compete with AA on some Caribbean and Mexico destinations.

Delta is going to still focus on Atlanta for those flights, but probably increasing flights to their other focus cities. Hopefully more to SLC, and maybe eventually adding flights to LAX or SEA

Even if it's not Charlotte this makes me very happy. Basically any investment in infrastructure pays off in the long term except a few specific instances (ahem...ATL streetcar) but any infrastructure can pay for itself by use during its lifetime.

Excuse me that is going to connect to the beltline (and connect 4 subway lines) in the next 5 years...

Also notable. People never believe me when I tell them the worst part of my drive between Charlotte and Atlanta isn't the end points: it's the middle.

SC road construction is the worst I've ever seen. Georgia has built about 60 miles worth of new lanes in 3 years. SC has been building 60 miles for 15 years.

from socials concerning new roads in Ballantyne:

""NEW ROADS 🛣️ Please use caution navigating new traffic patterns, as your safety continues to be our top priority.
This map illustrates new roads, intersections and traffic patterns. New traffic lights will be fully operational by Wednesday, January 31, and roads are expected to open on Thursday, February 1.
⬆️ Upper Avenue, connecting Johnston Road and North Community House Road
⬇️ Lower Avenue, connecting Ballantyne Commons Parkway and North Community House Road
Please note the section of Lower Avenue between Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Ballantyne Corporate Place will open in conjunction with The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery & Biergarten's opening, anticipated in mid-April.
We appreciate your patience throughout the construction process as we work to improve connectivity throughout the Ballantyne® campus and surrounding area.""

May be an image of map, road and text that says 'NAVIGATING NEW ROADS IMPROVING CONNECTIVITY BALLANTYNE UPPER AVENUE JOHNSTON ROAD บ× LOWER AVENUE TELTO COMMONS NEROADS ROADS NEW INTERSECTIONS NEW TRAFFIC PATTERNS SECTION OPENING MID-APRIL'

    Are those street names finalized?

I hate to say it but theres absolutely no fudgeing way, I've been to 12 NFL Stadiums, this would be an absurd statement. We have escalators, I've been to ones that dont... THIS YEAR.

I'd say BofA is pretty equivalent to Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, and it underwent a $350m renovation in 2015, and the location and situation is much worse. It also isn't going anywhere with the new F1 track, Paddocks and club renovations surrounding the stadium.

Walgreens on Milwaukee Ave at Damen (Wicker Park not CBD) in Chicago in a former bank building. Cosmetics are in the vault and the door still works.

Developers in Charlotte are never pushed to do this sort of conversion which is why we don't see it.

Wow it looks similar to the Walgreens in Dowtown Atlanta too

^ I missed it to. Its a pretty massive reroute (and length extension) at this stage of the game, so I am thinking typo. Having said that, this would be a satisfying additional FU to the State of South Carolina and would allow for an I-20 adjacent routing in Georgia (with the sacrifice of the Athens stop, but that was listed in the announcement so…)

Route planners have been pretty insistent about connecting airports (I think they view it as politically important) so I would be super-surprised if CLT was dropped.

My money is on a transcription error in Tillis’ office rather than any change from the previously identified preferred route.

    Its DEF a typo.

I don't understand the mentality of the lane-measuring contest going on here. Is someone keeping score of how much 6-lane interstate exists?

No, and I generally think lane widening isn't a positive, but with the amount of 18 wheelers traveling the I-85 corridor, the structural issues of I-85 west of Charlotte are decades behind other states in the region.

South Carolina is trying to improve this corridor, even if it is taking a decade to complete the widening. North Carolina's lack of progress on the highway between the largest 2 cities in the region is pathetic.

GA is by no means ahead of NC. 85/40 is 3+ lanes from Durham to 74 in Gaston County. We'll over 150 miles of 6 or more lanes which is amazing. What town in NC doesn't have a belt around it these days? Don't get me started on Asheboro.

GA is improving but outside of Atlanta it is horrid. And even in Atlanta, outside of the majors it's pretty bad....

Georgia is 3 lanes from Atlanta to the Florida border on 75, I-95 from SC to FL and 85 is soon to be 3+ lanes from SC border to Alabama (4 from ATL to almost the AL border). Georgia has much better roads and construction is much faster than NC. Atlanta has bad traffic, but the improvements come quickly and the infrastructure is much more built out than NC.

My list would be similar to your list. I think VA and GA are just a touch ahead of NC in urban freeways but that’s just based on vibes driving in ATL and Nova. NC/GA/VA are way ahead of Tennessee for sure.

GA is substantially ahead of NC. 85 in Gastonia is case in point. Georgia will also probably have 3 lanes each way on 85 to the SC border before SC finishes (LOL) and before NC even starts the widening in Gaston county. ATL will has reversible and toll lanes throughout most of the metro.

The state (and our federal reps) has dropped the ball once again, the Whitehouse announced the 31 new tech hubs that will receive fundings from the CHIPS act. NC did not make the list. [its still pretty early in the morning, did I miss it in the list?]

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/10/23/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-31-regional-tech-hubs-to-spur-american-innovation-strengthen-manufacturing-and-create-good-paying-jobs-in-every-region-of-the-country/

It's interesting to me these "hubs" tend to be in smaller metros with very specific focuses (Greenville and Augusta for example), not large metro areas with broad funding. I would think this comparatively hurts us less by not having it, if peer cities also aren't hosting these hubs. To be fair Richmond and Dallas had hubs, one from the state of VA the other through SMU (who had large amounts of matching private funds).

The state of NC def dropped the ball, but they would have nominated RDUCH.
