  1. So I happen to think that this group, as much as we like to argue and banter, may actually have the right combination of thinkers and professionals to pull off a good proposal for this competition. What do you guys think?

  2. Being very familiar with San Francisco's Trans Bay terminsl, watching so much money poured into a huge transit station over 5 years of construction, and still not in use to this day other than the bus station part, it really is sad to see the lost potential and wasted money. I know there isn't much rush since the actual high speed rail is still years away, but going ahead and building the station now would at least secure the project and start spurring other development around the area that is hesitant till this gets off the ground. The wall of underutilized land between uptown and gateway village is truly the next boom area of uptown.

  3. They do look pretty good. Definitely keeping in the style of what's been going up in the area lately. The thing that really sticks out though to me in this rendering is just how lame the Hawk is. SO uninspiring and lacking any creativity whatsoever. Glad it will be lost in the many projects around it.

Thirty years ago I was returning from a wedding in Greensboro late on a Saturday evening. I thought I could make it home to Dilworth without buying gas to make my return that few minutes sooner. This was a time when gas stations (some) closed at 10-12 p. m. I exited 77 on West Morehead and headed uphill toward Tryon. The car sputtered and I knew it was not able to make it. I turned off Morehead to avoid being a traffic impediment and coasted to a stop on that block of Dunbar at a few minutes after midnight. I pulled in front of one of those remaining houses and breathed heavily. There were a few more houses there at that time, prior to the Panthers Stadium. I woke my wife and she said groggily"Are we home?". "Almost". I discovered that night that there was a Dunbar Street in Charlotte behind the House of Prayer for all People. A 20 minute walk home leaving her in the car due to her high heel shoes, fetching her using our other car, followed by Sunday morning spent buying gas, fueling the empty car, driving it home then walking to Dunbar to recover the second car taught me not to trust my instinct about fuel economy.

The single pleasant thing about that evening was that on the walk to the house the Park Elevator Building housed a club at that time. It was a night club/performance space and after midnight the music was throbbing all over that part of the neighborhood. There was nothing and no one to be concerned about noise at that time in Charlotte. All pre-light rail, pre-South End, pre-pink tower (which took the place of the Park building. Perhaps someone here recalls Park Elevator as a night club/rave venue.

I do remember it, also was a bit of a sex club towards the end if I remember correctly.  Shame Jim Gross burned it down.  >:)

I like those two little houses on Dunbar Street. It looks like the one is getting a pretty serious makeover too

The odd thing is it was actually completely demolished only to be rebuilt, and I was going to ask if anyone here knew why or what it is being used for.  I can't imagine that land is going to last much longer in this state, as all of those remaining buidings are easily demolishable for larger development.

So the view of Uptown from almost all of these Townhomes will be blocked?  Not very familiar with this area

It will very likely cover up the peaks of the Bank of America building and Duke Energy Center towers you can just barely see in this picture.  I do have a rooftop patio that I will probably still see them from, but it will most likely cut out everything below the crowns.  The units further down, away from Mint Street will be less affected as they will probably see around the new building more.

I posted this in the expansion thread so don't shoot me if its repetitive but it absolutely applies. We are second in the country for growth, and also had the second largest increase over 2019.

Happy to say I was part of the San Francisco exodus, and adding back to Charlotte's growth this last year.  Everyone I knew in SF left the city.  Most moved to LA, Palm Springs, Tahoe, Texas and Idaho.  The recovery will take years before SF is back to how it was pre-covid, and hopefully cleaned up and better.

^ IMO the neighborhood has some of the best bones in Charlotte.

[housing stock, tree canopy, elevation, view, institutional buildings, greenway, mill and streetcar]

Agree with you completely. I have seen these hideous duplexes popping up everywhere around uptown and I just can't believe how little effort was put into the design. It doesn't just avoid fitting in, it blatantly offends everything around it. So sad.

With all these new residents coming to the Gold District can we get a full time bar or restaurant into the Dog House building? And the retail across the street on Morehead as well. Could be a great little corner especially on gamedays, Panthers and CLTFC.

Have you ever been over the Palmer street Arcade Bar? It's a gem, quite a hidden secret over here. I am making it a regular hang out.  All the arcade games are free to play and it's quite nice inside, even if you would never know it from the outside.
