  1. Burt, there hasn't been anything that I've seen next door But I'll take another look Tuesday

Burt I checked and saw nothing new going on, Same paper covering the windows. Last I saw of our ABC inspector he had not heard anything either, so far no application was on file.

We are curious as to whats going on as well as they are in the next block and all of us share parking from time to time. :shades:

  2. Has anyone noticed any activity at "The Rendezvous" space on the south side of Broad between BISTRO TWENTY SEVEN at Adams and TARRANT'S at Foushee?

In October, signs papered the windows of the building(s) promising "Coming Soon" and all sorts of rumors have floated around about it.

Burt, there hasn't been anything that I've seen next door But I'll take another look Tuesday

  3. Old Burt turned 80 over the weekend, so I'm going to ease my way out of here and yield to younger perspective. I'll pop in occasionally as "poster emeritus" and you may be sure I'll be lurking around. Meanwhile, keep me informed and entertained, please. :)

Hey Burt, I just saw you last year and would never believe your age, but hey 80 is the new 60 so

    HAPPY BELATED !!

    :fun::fun:

  4. The afternoon show was probably a couple hundred seats shy of a sellout which is pretty good considering this is the first year that they've done 2 shows in Richmond.

Well speaking for the group of us on upper nose bleed ( ) The concert was really a great show. Our Boss got us the tickets to go with him and some friends. One in the group said they did not want to go because of the condition of the place.

I gotta tell everyone it was one of the best I've seen there and the venue itself was clean and kept up!

I do have to say we were in 18U which in looking around was 15 rows from the top. That was a bit for a couple of us, very steep!

The sound was good way up there and the tran's was wonderful!

Curses, we ducked out before the end due to memories of the folks lined up to get out...

  5. Hey Burt and the rest !

    On the parking issues.....

So We have a Dedicated "PASSENGER LOADING ZONE" posted in front of our building. When we had a wedding a few weeks ago, It was full so the Limo stopped with flashers on to retreive the bride and groom. The happy guests lit their sparklers and prepared for them to appear and leave. JUST as they did the city police pulled up behind the LIMO and turned on the lights. Got out and dressed down the driver for saftey in a driving lane. While the guest watched.. the sparklers died out and some gest left. Thanks god the photographer had sense enough to keep shooting to distract them..

Call the 4th precinct LT. Monday

was told to talk to lanier parking for enforcment.

Got through to a nice lady who was getting the info about the property then stopped cold to tell me they don't work past 6 pm... the zone if from 6pm to 5am..............

    Go figure?

As a wonderful for us, not the first friday folks followup. The Boys on bikes (police) started issuing ticket and towing on Friday night. 4 car were towed out of the Zone. ( Turned out 3 were tenants in our building that enjoyed nightly free parking, they know better!) The city followed up with more towing on Saturday night and tickets this week. Yeah ! Someone listens.....

  6. You're right, Joey -- it is quiet in here. Wonder what has happened to Cam and Journi?

I'll take this opportunity to kvetch about parking downtown -- or at least, my impressions of the problem:

Downtown Richmond should put its heads together and figure out a parking solution that will welcome visitors, shoppers as well as concert/theatre/restaurant goers.

    End of rant.

  7. I don't doubt that the records are confidential. However, where is this great concern when the cleaning crew comes in to empty the trash cans every night. Are you mortified at the prospect that some Maria Garcia cleaning woman can get a glimpse of social security numbers? Why is that crap laying around unsecured anyway? As for the movers, I believe there was enough media on location to record every single swingin' johnson that touched a box. If something goes wrong, just call channel 6. They probably have hundreds of hours worth of video to review.

As for Wilder carrying a bat, do you remember the movie "Walking Tall"? I wish Wilder would start carrying a bat, broom, nightstick or something.

I could see the logic behind the school board remaining in city hall IF they shared phone systems, computer servers, etc.. But the simple fact is that they refuse to. They have their own phone systems, their own cleaning contracts, computer I.T. department and servers. They also run their own health insurance. Now that's what I call cooperation! Any simple fool knows that the best deal would result if they would consolidate services, yet they refuse. Since they desire to fly solo, I believe they should get a little shove from the nest.

As for the city forfieting any additonal property to the school board, I would have to disagree. I believe they should use one of the buildings like the Patrick Henry school or maybe they should take over the Model Tobacco building where DPU is currently located. That way, they would be just down the street from their beloved school busses.

I may be wrong as I have not been watching the events as tight as I should have but I thought the Mayor had notified the school board ( That I don't think should be in city hall ) that they needed to move by a specific date. Seems he kept his word and the School Board thought they didn't need to listen or thought they couldn't be told what to do.

I thing city services al things being City items should be in the Hall. The school board I think would be more effective in a place of their own and surly there is property that is owned by the city currently not being used that would suffice their needs.

I also like what Mayo Wilder has done, I used to watch the councel meetings because of all of the crazies, now I watch to see whats taking place in my home town.

  8. Hi, jon. We've missed you. I hope you or someone can give us some info and exact location of this place calling itself RENDEZVOUS.

And on the subject of abandoned JULIAN buildings, what's happened to plans for the one at Mulberry and Broad? Last report was that it was going to become a "destination" gay dance club.

Isn't the original GRAMPA EDDIE'S beyond Rt. 288 on Broad Street Road in Goochland?

Ok the first RENDEZVOUS is 2 buildings East od the Restaurant 27 at the corner of Adams & Broad. We understand some enterprising guys are planning an opening in November, the is only banners on the windows as I drove by but I will try to walk over on Thursday.

Yes the old ( gone now) Grampa Eddies is the same on there lease did not renew.

I hav'nt heard of the gay club thing for the one at Mulberry, and the building is still in shambles.

We've been KRAZY busy so forgive the lack of posts......

  9. Hey all

Just got in from a preopening at "Grampa Eddie's Ribs & Chicken"located at in the old Julian's space at three chopt road and Cox in the westend of Richmond

While they are in the finishing stages and tonight was a dry run for an established restaurant, it was quite nice.

For those of you that arn't aware we get them nearer to Richmond from WAAAAYY out west broad street beyond short pump. I personally never went, but my table mates had and say that the new place would hold the entire building of the old one.

Food was nice and filling and the portions were large.

We had the baby backs and brisket, very nice.

The place is pleasant, clean, has a nice outdoor deck and the staff was ready to please.

... since it was free, I'm not sure of the actual tab for 3 but I think around 70 would have covered everything and then some.

  10. Haha that's great. I noticed your door was open and I was tempted to stop by with my girlfriend, but I thought that red carpet entrance signified an event was going on so I didn't want to intrude.

Wish you could have, We have weddings going every weekend until... December!

Seems every first friday we seem to have a wedding through the season. We have been open with some art from time to time . The building is pretty interesting by itself.

Come on by any time you can, I love to show the place ... :)

  11. I wish they would extend the Broad Street median greenery in both directions -- east from 8th to at least 12th and west from 4th to at least Belvidere.

We would love that Idea as well! Also a bit of prudent pruning wouldn't hurt! the wonderful trees in front of our building are massive and block the building as well..

  12. Thanks, guys. We may take advantage of Quirk's valet parking.

And Jon, my old lady friend and I may pop in Thursday afternoon to see if you're in, but don't wait around. If we miss you we'll try again some other time.

    Fourth floor, right?

Indeed, we will be finishing set up for the wedding I think as well as pre-prep on the foods for the same. Should be there till at least 5 call if you can and I will get you downstairs and in the ballrooms 804 629 3373 ex22

Ah Just thought that may not have been appropriate so kick it out mods if you need to..

  13. I just called CHEZ FOUSHEE and they will NOT be open for dinner on the August 3rd First Friday, but will return to First Friday dinners in September.

Also called TWENTY SEVEN and they have plenty of openings for Friday, but she said it will be a mad-house with walk-ins. I reserved for four of us at 8PM.

    Great Burt!

Ok now for the fun... Parking will be a nightmare they have some spots behind 27, We will have all the other surrounding lots and of course I have Valet parking for 250 so it will be crazy. Our lots should be marked off still at that time but our party starts at 7 pm so it may not be.

I f you need to, look for Bernard ( Yellow Shirt ) in the back of our building and use my name !!

    Enjoy 27 !!

  14. Rumors that LEMAIRE, the highly ranked restaurant in The Jefferson Hotel is closed for renovation, are premature. It is still open for breakfast daily and for sumptious dinners Tuesdays thru Saturdays.

Present plans call for a complete overhaul of the Lemaire space beginning in January of '08 immediately following the Holidays. When completed after a couple of months, it may have an entire new look and maybe even a new name.

    Thanks Burt,

From what I could tell they had given info to staffers in respect to the remodel as we are a referral point for them.

I guess it will be much more extensive than in the beginning plans as they expected a 2 month change. I personally can't wait.

Love that Hotel! Its so nice to look out the back and see them at night!

    Jon:

Thanks so much - Didn't get to read this till just now, as we are just back from TDB. The actual choice became simple on learning that Epanema is closed Sunday. But you have reinforced the choice we came to and I'll add my fresh recollections for the record. The Salad bar was great. A far from complete list of items extracted from an old hard to access brain (mine) include: All standard

  15. :) Where've you been, Jon? We've missed you. I was just looking thru the Buttermilk & Molasses link (you'll find it in the Richmond Development thread about the recent charrette) and in one of its links (First Fridays) there are a few pix of Renaissance.

I'll be around this coming First Friday (Aug. 5th) with some friends and rels. Quick five-day trip to get my Richmond fix.

Why thanks Burt, Stop by if you make to our area. I will be in and out of the office this week but Friday will be there most of the day with a HUGE wedding Friday Night !! Stop in and Say hi,

If its during the Wedding ask for me from one of the Hosts or staff at the door, We have Bernard in the parking area and he can Radio me !!

    Hope to see you

  16. If the sky's the limit for price range, check out the 5-Star Lemaire Restaurant at the Jefferson Hotel:

Hey Man nice short chat the other day.

I'll try to check Monday but we were told Lemaire was closed for remod ?? till Late summer.

I've been lame and havn't checked it out....

  17. Burt (or anyone):

The price at TexasDeBrazil is roughly twice the cost of Ipanema. We want to try one of them tomorrow. Being a famous cheapskate, to whom good food is important, I'm wondering to what extent the difference in price is a direct reflection of a difference in food quality as opposed to differences in the many other variables. For example if Ipenema were similar in quality but offering simply a less elaborate salad and side dish table I would lean towards Ipanima. I also observe that texas appears to offer some higher end cuts such as filets, but if Ipenma's meats were well executed sirloins or rib-eye instead, well that's probably fine as well. If on the other hand, TDB's food is better than Ipanema's, is it only marginally better or is it actually twice as good?

I guess my rambling drift is clear enough - The bottomline Q is the age old one - value for money.

    Thanks,

    Cheers, Tim

    Well heres my 2 cent,

TDB : Hard to beat it, we've been 4 times and it was Great on all the visits. The look the feel the food, all good. Interesting selections on the "salad Bar". Its no the shoney's bar so be aware there may be some things that you don't normally see. Nice cured meats nice mixed salads, olives, tuna ect. Meats were wonderful and plentiful.

NOTE: several friends have gone and its better with more folks not a couples night out. I think I agree but we've only gone with 6 or more.

    Ipanema:

Well the place is nice. The price is very fair however the 2 times I've gone the service was not the best. We needed to ask for everything including meats. ( Both times we were lucky enough to sit next to large tables and the goucho's do the large table and any thing left on the skewer is offered to others. ) While I'm normally a quiet guy IN the restaurant I paid the bill both times and spoke with the owner before leaving he was nice and said he would speak to the staff. I think it could be again what we noted from TDB a larger group is better and the service better as well.

While I LOVE food, I try not to be a snob, Food at TDB is Superior! and of course you pay for that. Food At ipanema is good and flavorful and I enjoyed what I got alot, there just wasn't much of it...... Then again I was full when I left?

  18. Very resourceful site BGW. I wonder what address on 1st? It's odd I was downtown for a little bit today. I'm uploading now.

Must have been a fire weekend! There was a fire in our building Friday night that dumped thousands of gallons of water into one of our Banquet rooms. No one was hurt thank goodness and thier kitties hid in a closet for saftey

  19. Although some repaving has been done, many streets in Richmond are in dire need of extensive work. Their present condition gives an impression of decay and neglect that detracts from otherwise interesting streetscapes, IMO.

How was your trip Burt ?

Opps I think I found the notes!

  20. Yep, JSI. Old Southern Culture is now part of Michelle Williams' restaurant empire (HARD SHELL, CHA CHA CANTINA, EUROPA, LUCKY BUDHA, THE HILL CAFE and MICHELLE'S at Hanover Tavern).)

If you learn its new name, opening date and type of menu, let us know, please.

Hi all, We were at Sticky Rice again and there was lots of activity on the old southern comfort Restaurant. I don't know the old lay out but the lower floor now has a staircase down the far wall that turns out to the lower floor. Winding I think the name for that would be. The second floor is open to the first for the first 15 20 feet. the layout looked as if it would be rather nice.

The constuction folks had no info as to the how or who or what. Its in the build stage. nothing there but the bones :stop:
