  1. Just a small correction - the County bought the site earlier this year. It caused the standard Anderson drama of Councilwoman Cindy Wilson claiming that administrator Joey Preston was doing something illegal. The new news is that they are ready to begin renovations which will move some county offices to the site.

Thanks .....what is going on with Ms. Wilson? Always seems to have controversy and conspiracy surrounding her.

  2. Doubt Black Label is going to open any new boutiques.

Zara is also opening at Lenox. Looks like 2 of the stores for the expansion have signed.

Zara is trendy ....we live in Bucharest (Romania) and there is one here ....women's store with men's next door. It is ultra-cool and popular. Most people think Bucharest and think poor, but there is money here and we have all these names I read here.... Miss Sixty and all those are everywhere here. BTW, from SC, so ATL was our 2nd home and Lenox was always a 1st choice for a day in the city.

  3. Everyone that I have talked to who has been to the Super Bilo at Verdae said it's been outrageously crowded every time. I'm sure it's the new factor, but it's also a great location. I wonder how long it will be before some competition comes in and takes an empty box on Laurens. :dontknow:

Where exactly is the new Bi Lo verdae?

  4. Hi Romania,

Do you know if it was employee theft or customer theft? The location was/is in a pretty dicey location. I wonder if modern theft supression techniques might be able to solve that problem.

As I understood it, definitely the neighborhood. Sometimes the theft late at night was so brazen people just carried things out of the store. Employees were too afraid to stop them and the police were there all the time. They finally cut their losses and closed shop. It seems that they were told the River St. store was a really bad idea, but not being a local chain, all they saw was a lot of potential customers.

  5. Back to Anderson....

Downtown doesn't have vary many people, this much is true. However, you have to look beyond downtown. What type of market is within a few miles of downtown? Would these people drive to downtown? Perhaps the grocery stores that are there now serve them well. That Ingles on Main near the Boulevard always seems to be packed with cars, and maybe that is enough to serve downtown?

The convenience store idea would be great. The whole concept of a corner store is all but lost these days.

The Kroger downtown Anderson closed after a short run because of theft. The store was carried out bit by bit. I worked for a "rival" at the time and it was common knowledge that they were being taken. They finally cut their losses and closed. No one ever even tried to go there again.

  6. Could this be Anderson's first Super Bi-Lo?

Bi-Lo is also looking to add stores in Iva/Starr, Belton and Williamston and improve several stores within the county.

Wednesday's Anderson Independent newspaper's on-line version has an article about Bi-Lo and Food Lion joining Ingle's at Hwy. 24 and Whitehall Road. (andersonindependent.com)

I grew up out there in that area..... hard to believe it. Anyone remember when the ONLY thing out there was Davis and Elrods?

  7. The Jockey lot is probably more geographically northeast Anderson, but folks out there are more disconnected from the city in my opinion. They identify more as rural. The folks living out 81 identify more as part of the city.

I wonder about the viability of a Wal-mart or Target on 81. I'm sure it's coming, I just don't know if the population is there yet. I suspect that in the next 5-10 years it will definitely work. Now I think it would be risky, but perhaps one worth taking. Anderson could definitely use another commercial corridor in an area convenient to the upper income folks (ie 81 north). I wonder if a second mall (outdoor or indoor with one or two department store anchors) is in the 81 corridor future.

I really hope that residential development continues, especially some of the density that is being built in terms of apartment homes and townhomes. It's a pretty fast growing part of the county/city.

For what it's worth, maybe the Hwy. 29 area could handle a Super wal-Mart to accomodate all of the people in Williamston / Belton and northern Anderson County. They often drive to Greenville (White Horse Road area) to shop and the Honea Path people go to Greenwood. 29 at Hwy 8 (if the roads were better) might be good place, or at the 81 / 85 exchange.

  8. Yes, thanks for mentioning B & N or Borders.... I think it could fly at the mall, especially if tied to the front or the food court. I have a dream where Sears leaves (to do some Grand thing at the Kmart down the street) and then that could become a big bookstore. Or, in another senario, Sears leaves, Dillard's rebuilds there and the bookstore takes the old Belk Men's location after we force them to move!

  9. I wanted to throw in a comment about Anderson Mall.... it really has potential to make it. I think that Belk should consolidate everything to their wing of the mall, Dillard's should raze the "Men's store" and build a simple 2 story site there and then Dick's Sporting Goods should build a store where the old theater is now. This would give some new blood to it all. There are several national chains that could do well there if the mall were postioned a bit better.

  10. Among the larger Belk stores, Eastland (Charlotte), Richland Mall (Columbia), Tanglewood Mall (Roanoke), Four Seasons (Greensboro), Regency Square (Jacksonville) and Oak Hollow Mall (High Point) are a little weaker than the rest of the pack. But none of those stores is underperforming to my knowledge, they're just not top performers. Most of the truly troubled large Belks have been divested over the last 10 years or so. Most of Belk's smaller stores have good sales per squre foot.

Among other Southeastern department stores, McRae's and Parisian tend to do well in the larger cities, Proffit's owns East Tennessee, Dillard's rules a lot of midsized markets, and Macy's is strong at Lenox, Riverchase, Perimeter, Aventura and Dadeland malls.

When it was still Rich's at Perimeter, it was consistently the chain's highest performing store. Perimeter, in my opinion, just screams "upscale and casual wealthy."

  11. ...never been to CVM but love reading about it. I like it when these older malls can kick it to be better than the newer ones. I wish McAlister in greenville could have survived. Want to say that the Lord & Taylor logo is the best ever ......only thing ever any better was the old John Wannamaker logo ...something about that cursive swaying!
