  1. I tried out Cous Cous, and was very satisfied. Tapas items ranged from $5 to 9 dollars. We got 3 tapas and a salad and had a lot of leftovers. Mediterranean platter ($9) was huge with hummus, pita, tabouli, spiced pickled carrots, peppers, olives etc. Tabouli was a little weak in the parsley, barley dept. for my taste, but still excellent. Hummus, of various varieties was smooth and tasty. The house red (some type of Sangiovese, but forgot exactly what it was) was $18, good price for the quality. Wilted spinach with apples and pine nuts was superb. Slow cooked chicken was moist and tender, with a unique flavor. We also tried a salad (I think it was $4 and was called Fez's salad if I'm not mistaken), which was also excellent.

Then we sat at the bar. My date had a pomegranate martini, which she loved, and I had a very strong and good mint julep. I followed that up with a good mojito (mint was very fresh) and she had a pomegranate mojito, which was so good that everyone else at the bar started ordering it. I also saw Mr. Yamash(ee)ta, on the premises, but didn't get a chance to speak with him. He looks very young except for his grey hair. I would have sworn he was my age otherwise. I should point out something I learned from our waitress, In case others don't already know this; The correct pronunciation puts the accent on the second syllable, not on the ('EET') as I'd assumed.

  2. Heres the link: St. John Place

The Civic Center hosts many more quality events than its counterpart (Roanoke Civic Center)

Do you think its possible that many event managers prefer the Salem Civic center if they expect crowds below 6,000. Its probable that the Salem facility is cheaper to rent than Roanoke's, since it's smaller, and event organisers would prefer to pay less unless they expect more people than the Salem facility can handle.

When I was in high school, concerts advertised on the radio were much more common at the Roanoke Civic center (probably 3 to one compared with Salem CC.)

  3. ^^^ I wsn't able to access the article so maybe I'm missing something here but I can't believe that downtown Roanoke only has 400 residents, especially with the views of the beautiful mountains nearby available.

You think 400 is bad, 10 years ago it was probably much closer to 40.

  4. Agreed. All the current law does is force restaurant owners to get creative with their books. Its just a stupid rule. There are some establishments that have crappy food but are a great spot for socializing over a few drinks. If I had a bar, I'd sell beer battered lime slices for $3-5. There would be one slice per order, covered in 12-16 ounces of pure beer. :alc:

  5. Is Salem sort of the red-headed step child of Roanoke? I seldom see mention of it here. We mention Petersburg in Richmond threads more often than you guys refer to Salem. :)

It depends on who you ask. Salemites might say they are the golden children of the Roanoke Valley. But really, it

  6. What exactly is an honor system anyway? Since it's in the front of the store they are hoping folks don't grab and go without paying?

It kind of baffles me too. Its not like this is some small Mom and pop in a small community where everyone knows each other. Maybe this is being funded by the psychology department at a major research university. It would be cool if solicitors were allowed to accept donations for an employee health care fund at the front of the store. That way, even if I didn't 'pay' for my 'honor system' coffee and snacks, I could feel honorable by paying the employees directly. Just something to make you go.. Hmm.. <_<

  7. McLaw, remember that $49 cap on you know what. I suppose it also applies to the new store.

Yeah and it should be considerably easier with merchandise for sale on the honor system right at the front of the store.

  8. Does your total figure include all your Roanoke entries?

Yes, thats the measly total from all my postings on UP, even with my Roanoke postings. I'll see what I can do about your request to post the articles on the Tri-cities thread, unless someone else beats me to it.

  9. McLaw, isn't STICKY TOGOGO in the former Mainly Pasta space across from Mr. (ahem cough cough) Y's popular STICKY RICE?

    Yes, that is correct, Burt.

I went to Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant at 6004 West Broad on Saturday night. There was a 25 minute wait. Significant, considering how big the place is. We were supposed to be meeting my old roomie and her new boyfriend, but she had a small jeans/big butt crisis and ending up bailing on us. I did enjoy the chicken and beef platter, which allowed me to roll my own spring rolls. Funny, I've never rolled spring rolls before but my ingrained habits from college served me well (like riding a bicycle) I also enjoyed the huge selection of Belgian beers. Another pleasant surprise was the crab and asparagus soup, with a typical thick broth (great for a sore throat) and white asparagus. Even though I didn't notice the typical strong asparagus taste, it still made my pee smell funny.

  10. Although I still dislike Wal-mart, this is definitely a step in the right direction on several fronts. Smaller footprint ... good, smaller parking lot...good, more dignified uniforms... good, more wine...definitely good. Now if they went ahead with that sushi bar idea, and if wages went up just a smidge, and employees got health benefits....

    Oh well, maybe one day.

  11. I'm going to try to post the panoramic photo I took of downtown from the 2nd street bridge. It is actually several overlapping shots.

Unfortunately, some of Roanoke's most prominent buildings, such as the NS building (well lit at the top just to the left of the black blg with verticle white strips) and the Poff Federal building (far right) are barely visible from this angle. But I think its a completely different looking skyline from this angle, compared to the typical Mill Mtn View.

  12. I should mention that I tried out Sticky Togogo and found it to be very worrthwhile. The place is only 2 blocks south and 1.5 blocks west of my house. I just stopped by Rennies on the way back for some good beer and had a great feast for two with 24 beers (plenty to spare) for 50 bucks. Try doing that at Sticky Rice.

  13. Not yet. My next stop will probably be Magiano's, where I don't expect to see him. I've got $15 worth of coupons there. I've got to budget my money for the next month or so, so I probably won't go anywhere particularly nice for at least the next two weeks. I might head to Julep's this monday though.

  14. Tim was in Roanoke this week announcing his plans for a Medical College in conjunction with VPI and Carrilion.

Wonder if he stopped by the elegant METRO again while in The Star City?

I wouldn't be surprised if he returned. Another nice spot would be Trio, although its not quite as trendy.

I noticed the roadside memorial as well on my way out to around Twin Hickory not too long ago as well...

Apparently the girl just sped right through the red light and t-boned him. She was very young and drunk.

I ran a stop sign once by accident when I was towing a trailer and couldn't stop in time due to the extra 3000 pounds behind my car. I was halfway into the intersection before I stopped. I'd had a few too many and thank God no one was coming. I learned a lesson that night. The more weight you're moving, the more sober you should be. Drunk on a skateboard, no big deal, drunk at the wheel of the Exxon Valdes - very big deal. Above .08 is just too high to drive, but its even more dangerous when you're towing a trailer. I'd be willing to bet that the girl in this accident was well above .08, I don't think she had any intention of stopping at all.

  15. Yea, McLaw. Mr. YamaS H I T A, who also co-owns COUS COUS, opened TOGOGO in the former Mainly Pasta across from STICKY RICE.

I wonder if Yamayouknow knows how much fun we have had with his forbidden name over here.

I've never eaten at CHEESECAKE FACTORY, but good to get a report from you, McLaw. Did you have any famous table neighbors? Plastic water glasses sound pretty tacky to me.

Well they were that thick, nice, permanant plastic, but they certainly weren't glass. Well I think my dining buddy Tim has been too busy with his transportation proposals to drive around Short Pump lately. I think I was surrounded by west enders, I'm sure some of them were moderately famous.

On a sad note, I drove past the spot where the Applebees employee was killed by a drunk driver. There was a roadside memorial at the intersection of Lauderdale and Broad.

  16. Yeah, I remember the discussion about Mr. Yamash*ta, but I couldn't remember if those discussions were about Cous, Cous or Togogo, or maybe both.

My friend ordered the Bang bang chicken and shrimp. I like the thai style curry sauce. The serving is enourmous! It must be 2 pounds of food.
