I will be interested to hear all the ranting and raving that is likely to come from those who live in historic 4th ward. They can't possibly be happy about this, can they?

The antennae definitely remind me of the Sears tower. I drive past the firehouse every morning and today there were surveyors out there. Not wasting any time!!
  3. The story is at this WBTV link: Polk Building They made a pretty big deal about it on their newscast last night with a live on location reporter standing in front of the building (shielding herself from falling bricks)
  4. Another news flash...apparently the city finally decided to give the land where the decrepit Polk Building sits on Graham b/w Trade and 5th to Johnson & Wales Univ. It's a part payback (land worth $6 million) of an incentive to lure the university to Charlotte. The school said they would use the land for either another student residence, a business center, or a parking garage (hope not). The city will take care of razing the building and cleanup. Hooray..it's about time they got rid of this eyesore!!
  5. Is this "Jimmy" from Seinfeld, the one that keeps referring to himself in the third person? "Jimmy's under the boards. Jimmy's in the open. Jimmy makes the shot!"
  6. Has anyone seen the new Charlotte Douglas airport parking garage? I got a glimpse of it on Thurs night, but it wasnt really lighted because I dont think it's finished. Im sure it looks much better in daylight. Anyway, from what I could tell, it looks pretty darn cool...some very modern touches. I will try and take a photo when i get back next week.
  7. It's cheap, disposable furniture that usually comes in a box and needs assembly. Although it's cheap, it's considered shabby chic in some circles, maybe because it's from Sweden. When I left my manhattan apt, I destroyed it into small pieces with a mallet for easy curbside pickup.
  8. Welcome to Charlotte, hotspottny. I am also a transplanted NYer down here, and loving it!
  9. good find. We may have to ask dubone to update is uptown charlotte rundown map soon and it's only 2 months old!!
  10. I believe it's 2 blocks from Carillon. The one right next to Carillon is the Center City Inn, soon to be history of course, when Trademark construction starts. Then the next block heading west is the courthouse.
  11. Timely discussion for MLK day! Anyway, I've only been on this board for about 3 months and have learned a lot of new things about Charlotte in that short time thanks to all of you. I thought it might be a good idea to see where you all are from and what part of the area you currently live in. Im originally from NYC, now live uptown (Fourth Ward).
  12. It's a real eyesore. There is scaffolding on the Graham St. side which has just been sitting there collecting dust with no work taking place. Maybe it's holding the building up? I've heard about J&W's interest - it would certainly make strategic sense considering the lot's proximity to its Gateway Village campus and the CityView student apartments across the street. Where are they planning on putting their proposed business school building?
  13. It sometimes seems appropriate when you walk past many of the "college-like" bars on N. College.

    Courtside

That would be so awesome if it pans out. I figured ESPNzone might be at the old convention center site.
  15. so does the Norfolk Southern freight trains that barrel through the area and blare their horns all night between 10pm and 8am.
