  1. ^Perhaps South could be converted back to a two-way street in order to not only relieve Robinson of some eastbound traffic but also to make the entire area easier and more accessible.

I don't see how they could. Heading east on South St is how lots of people get to the arena and to I-4. Now that we have to make a left to head south onto Orange and then east on Anderson to get to I-4 east we're going to need those left turn lanes.

  2. Random thought I had as I drove through downtown the other night:

How about shutting down the portion of N Eola Drive that fronts Lake Eola Park and turning it into green space, keeping just the east sidewalk for the dwellings and business that front the street? It seems those buildings could be accessed via Summerlin anyway. This would also allow for the closure of the E Washington extension/dead-end by the park's playground.

It's not a groundbreaker by any means-- I just think that the park could benefit from expansion and there isn't a lot of room for it so why not do it while Eola Drive is fairly superfluous. A nice peaceful pedestrian lane could be created and through-traffic could be detoured through Summerlin, which is better suited for that kind of traffic.

Great idea. The only potential complaint I see is the loss of street parking.

  3. Actually no, they cannot create any new Marvel rides, only keep the existing ones.

I've read differently, although not from a certified legal authority, that Universal could make new rides so long as they fit the theme of the characters.

I don't know if they have the rights to Guardians of the Galaxy, but if they wanted to make a Fantastic Four ride, is there something in the contract from stopping them?

  4. I run from Rosalind on South up and around Lake Underhill and back on Anderson once or twice a week and other than the stretch on South between Bumby and Primrose the sidewalks are pretty good.  There is no need to be on the 408 side of either of these roads.  The only hazards are cars coming from Liberty, Lake and Eola Streets turning right on South Street that only yield and look left before making me a hood ornament.

Driving, I do like the 50mph, um, I mean 35mph speed limit on South Street.

It sounds like we're neighbors. I start at the same corner and Take South eastbound to Summerlin & then head south to Michigan. I have to be careful crossing the 408 off ramp.

  5. Forbes: "Forty-eight million people visited Orlando in 2009. That, combined with a 12% year-over-year increase in overseas visitors and a hotel occupancy rate of 60.7%, made it America’s top spot for travelers." (we've only increased since then).

USA Today: "Looking at its booking data from July 2012 to June 2013, (Cvent) found that Orlando, followed by Chicago and Las Vegas were the top go-to spots. But the list also included several new entrants, such as National Harbor, Md., Coronado, Calif., and Naples, Fla.

Exactly which "big boys" are we not playing with?

Orlando may be second tier as an MSA, but when it comes to tourism, we play second fiddle to no one.

We can't hang with Vegas & Chicago when it comes to large conventions. I've been to the convention center in all 3 cities and the infrastructure around I-Drive makes large conventions a pain to get to. We need some form of rail in the I-Drive area to facilitate movement.

  6. Maybe it would finally influence a full time light rail connection between downtown and East Orlando.

It's such a dire need. Imagine the employers downtown having a light rail to 50,000 young employees.

Downtown Phoenix & ASU are connected by light rail. So should UCF and downtown Orlando.

  7. Yea if you are at Michigan and Orange, why would you take a train to downtown aside from the cool factor?

Between the 3, 8, 11, 18 and 40 you can pretty much stand at Orange outside the Starbucks at Crystal Lake and catch a bus within 8-10 minutes. That's a pretty awesome situation to be in in any city, let alone one as young as Orlando!

I agree with you. I'll play devil's advocate and say it would be easier to bring a bike downtown on the train VS the bus, and SunRail would have Wi-Fi.

The 11 is a very underutilized line. I have a car and live in Thornton Park (Eola Square) and walk to Orange to take the 11 to the airport. Once the E/W Lymmo begins services, I'm hoping more downtown dwellers realize the use of Lynx without the stigma.

Totally agree. I live on South St and would pretty much refuse to drive to the airport when I can walk a block & catch the 11 or the 51.

  8. NBA City, ESPN, and Planet Hollywood are tourist attractions...not sure that's what either CSS or those companies are really aiming for at this point.

Dave and Busters has looked at Orlando before, but from what I've heard has been gun shy because of the countless amounts of entertainment options. Chances are any Orlando D&B's wouldn't be downtown anyway. The company has a pretty lengthy record of opting for more suburban locations off major interstates.

For example the Nashville location is by the Grand Ol' Opry...about 10 miles from downtown. The Atlanta locations are on the interstates in Gwinnett and Marrieta north of downtown. The Charlotte location is in the suburb of Concord. Jacksonville's is about 10 miles south of downtown. They have put them in high tourist areas in downtowns of some cities...NYC in Times Square, Chicago, Dallas (where they started).

As a company they are very selective of location because of the overhead is so high. If I were a betting man, and if Orlando were to ever get a D&Bs it would be in Altamonte, Millenia, I-Drive, or LBV. I seriously doubt they'll ever consider downtown Orlando.

The Target Center in downtown Minneapolis has an NBA City restaurant. Minneapolis is a great city, but not a tourist attraction area.

I could see a D&B going into downtown Orlando. You would have visibility from the highway, and incredible foot traffic.

  9. NBA City, ESPN, Planet Hollywood and Dave & buster can squeeze in there.

I think being that close to the events center a sports themed restaurant would be best. I like the idea of D&B though. Anything that would be a good place for appetizers and to play a few games of skeeball or the like.
