  1. Sorry for the long delay.... things have been busy. Yes, I am a programmer. A relatively senior one with an MBA. It makes finding a job difficult because of the specifics of what I'm looking for. I figure if I don't find something I like in time, I'll do freelance while I keep looking. We were quoted 250 under the building, and everything nearby was 200+. The ones that were under $200 didn't have 24 hour access. And, unfortunately for the pocketbook, we are likely to need the car at "non-business" hours: in particular for ski / weekend trips. Not all the time, but, often enough to make it something that's on the must-have list. Traz
  2. Yeah, I'm looking downtown. Basically, between husband and myself, we're going to be heading different directions and that was the most central / transit accessible area. I'm still looking for my job, which could be anywhere from the 128 corridor to Boston to Providence to southern Rhode Island. He's working in East Greenwich, so, that part's set. We both really prefer living *in* the city, so Downcity is what the choice seems to be. I'm thinking for parking that maybe one of us will park there and the other will have a little hike to get the car. Traz
  3. Thanks for the info. I like beer in general, but my favorite place in DC is heavily Belgian oriented The Brick, so I'm going to miss having that around. Maybe I'll have to start my own business running a Belgian pub . On public transit. I'm going to miss griping about Metro. I mean, the complaints about having to wait 45 minutes while 15 trains pass by, so packed to the gills with people that you cannot even get into the train, at least mean that there's an abundance of trains. They're just not keeping up with the crowds. And the ever non-working escalators. Why couldn't they build stairs like every other subway system.... *sigh*
  4. Well, maybe not 3x as much, but it is significantly higher. Monthly parking passes run from $75-$150 in the DC area, depending. I've seen very few charge more. I currently live in Arlington, on the subway line, which is extremely built up. They keep on tearing down 8 story buildings to build 20+ story buildings. And have them fill to capacity in under a year. Apartment buildings usually give one parking spot in the garage for free, and a second one for another $50. Plus there's parking from 5pm-8am on almost all streets, some with meters until 7pm, but otherwise free. The places I've been looking at so far have been charging $200-250 a month per car. traz
  5. Hi all. I just joined as this seemed to have lots of good in terms of local information on Providence / New England. A little about me: I'm moving to Providence after 7+ years living in the inner DC suburbs (Arlington). Before that, I went to college in New Haven, so I'm a little familiar with New England & some of its quirks. Yes, I'm a Yalie. Before that I was a midwesterner. I love cities. I currently drive my car maybe twice a week, and otherwise use mass transit / feet / bike, depending on weather and time of day. I personally think most of our traffic and pollution problems could be solved if people gave up the idea that they need to live in a 3000 sq ft house on 4 acres for a family of 3, and realized they are perfectly happy in a townhouse in the city. So, the things I'd most like to know are: Where are the best places to get beer (pubs, preferably if there are any that stock Belgian brews)? Why is parking 3 times as expensive in Providence as it is in DC? Did I just hit the radio on a bad weekend, or is there music played on any non-NPR station that was made outside of the 80s? I'm sure I'll have more questions after I move up. Thanks! Traz
