  1. I like the left side of the building a lot more than the right side

The left side of the building does look a lot nicer then the right. The left side has a more historic look while the right has the more modern look. It doesn't make sense on why they would make the building half and half though.

  2. I'm gonna say this once and only once. Keep all Immigration related posts to the thread in the coffeehouse. I'm honestly sick of reading all of these arguments in 5 different topics. Anyone who doesn't follow these rules will face consequences.

Now if it isn't too much trouble, let's try and talk about the city of Fayetteville on this thread.

Damn Mcheiss your taking the fun out of everything :D

  3. No offense, but UA is a pretty average school. It has strong programs (like business and creative writing), but it also has other average and weak programs. UA is ranked 24th among public undergrad business program. That automatically eliminates the privates, which tend to perform better. In addition, business undergrad programs are not that common as compared arts and sciences (i.e. not everyone has them, as with engineering schools). For interest, here are business week's most recent rankings (UA doesn't make a blip): http://tinyurl.com/2yyfej

I disagree with you that the UofA is a pretty average school...I got a degree last year from the UofA and the Walton College and I think my education was very good. I did not have any problem finding a job out of school and I had quite a few offers to choose from. Everyone I talked to thinks the UofA is a good school and to say its average is wrong. The UofA is no Harvard, Yale, Stanford or anything along those lines, but for a public university you get a damn good education.

  4. Another city has been added to XNA's non-stop destinations. Miami will be the 6th city to be served by American Airlines/American Eagle. The daily flight will leave a 6:30 in the morning beginning April 11th. This all together makes 16 non stop destinations from the airport.

    Atlanta

    Charlotte

    Chicago

    Cincinnati

    Dallas

    Denver

    Detroit

    Houston

    Los Angeles

    Memphis

    Minneapolis/St. Paul

    New York Laguardia

    Newark

    Miami

    Salt Lake City

    St. Louis

That is good news, I'm still not happy with the fact that Delta pulled the plug on the flight to Orlando.

  5. I read in today's paper that Fayetteville is planning on opening a new high school by 2011.

The schoolboard still has to vote within the next 6 months on wether the new high school will be a replacement or a second high school.

I myself would like to see Fayetteville's current High School to be sold, preferably to the UofA, so the university has more room to grow. Although, I hate to see Fayetteville's current high school go, it's probably the oldest one now, since Rogers High School Sophomore Campus is being converted (demolished), into a second high school.

Personally I would like to see a second HS in Fayetteville. I live in Fayetteville and traffic is terrible and for a student to drive from the other side of town can take awhile. I don't think a student living in a large city like this should have to drive for 45 minutes to get to HS, so I would like to see a second one built on the east side of town...in the mission/crossover area.

  6. What about Pinnacle air in Rogers. Do they not offer private commercial flights. I could understand a company like that benefitting from a location at Drake. Those wishing to just fly in and out of Fayetteville.

Your right they do have private commerical flights, but how many people/companies have and are willing to pay that type of money when you can fly commerical at XNA for a few hundred.

  7. true, I imagine having four small airports in the area doesn't help XNA. Or it makes it harder in some ways when people do have other options even if they are limited. Although I will say maybe they could have located it a bit more centrally in the metro, maybe around Lowell. I think having it that far north makes it more likely that people here on the southern end of the metro might consider other options like Drake. Then again Drake used to be the airport for NWA so I think it has some use.

The 4 smaller airports do not compete with business with XNA. XNA is the ONLY commerical airport in NWA and if you are not using a private plane or company plane, your only opinon in NWA is XNA. The amount of operations have no impact on the airport, its just a numbe they release. Airports make their money on renting hanger spaces and selling fuel. XNA makes its money from the commerical planes, who rent space from the airport to operate from there. Drake is not an option for people wanting to fly commerical. If you want to fly commerical you can fly XNA, FT. Smith, Tulsa, Springfield, so I don't understand how people who live in Fayetteville might consider other options.

  8. I wish we could close down certain airports like Springdale, Rogers, or Bentonville, and alleviate traffic to XNA. I think costs would be down because of less maintenance costs, crews, etc. It'll never happen, but it would be nice to have one airport instead of 4 small ones and a regional one.

Personally I think that is a bad idea. Corps use airports close to their HQ or where they are doing business to save time. Smaller airports make it easier for individuals to own and operate a plane. If someone is wanting to do business in say Springdale with Tyson, why would you want to fly to Drake or XNA. Being form Siloam Springs, we have an airport, and it really helps the smaller companies such as Allens, Simmons and Cobb.

  9. Okay maybe someone who knows more about airports can explain this to me. In today's Northwest Arkansas Times they are reporting that Drake Field here in Fayetteville was busier than XNA during the month of June. Drake Field logged 6,934 operations compared to XNA's 5,059. Can anyone explain what an operatio is compared to a flight? And how can Drake be busier than XNA? If Drake keeps doing well could this end up drawing more Fayetteville back to Drake and possibly hurt XNA having two airports instead of just one regional one?

Drake has a lot of personal aircraft. If someone takes off in their little personal 2 seat aircraft that counts as an operation, say they fly around for 5 minutes and land, that is another operation. Drake has some corporate jets as well, but most of those are do to personal aircrat in and out of the airport. Isn't there some flying school there as well? Drake does not have any commerical service anymore, the only commerical service is at XNA.

  10. Well Emplaments were up at XNA for the month of July 2006 over 2005.

    July 2006 - 53,491

    July 2005 - 53,436

Not much of a jump, but when you consider the amount of flights lost, it's probably a large improvement.

I think the lose of flights hurt, however, I think the growth of double digit growth at XNA is coming to a halt. With more and more suppliers moving to NWA, you are going to have fewer and fewer flying to XNA all the time, I would love to see a few more flights added, especially to Orlando and to Las Vegas. I would think a Vegas flight would do really well out of XNA.

  11. Yeah even though overall things seem to be slowing down a bit at XNA they are still going ahead with plans to expand certain areas of the airport. Because to be honest they can't really keep growing anyway with it being the size that it is.

Has anyone been to XNA lately?? I know they expanded the luggage claims area, and last time I was there it was still under construction. I will at XNA in three weeks, but I didn't know if that constuction was done yet or not.

  12. That growth probably resulted from the Shareholder's meeting.

Since XNA has lost several flights over the past year (2 Minneapolis, 1 Detriot, 1 Orlando), I don't see XNA's growth becoming exponential with the current situation of airlines. I hope Northwest Airlines and Delta can bring back those flights, they were quite popular. I just got done checking Northwest's website and nearly all flights to destinations out of XNA are sold out. Without additional flights, I don't see a lot of huge growth at XNA.

Your right, I think without new flights being added the growth at XNA will not rise a lot, like it has in the past. Also when I compared the june 05 to june 06, the shareholders meeting was the first week of june in both years, so you are comparing the two.

  13. We're a long way off from getting a discount airline. I believe total enplanements/deplanements would have to be about a million each.

Last year XNA has nearly 600,000 enplanemnts/deplanements each. Personally I dont think we are that far away. The airport is expanding its ticket counter, and the terminal to one day get a discount airline. I don't think they would be doing this expanding if they didn't think they were pretty close, maybe in 3-5 years I hope.

  14. The June number have been released for XNA, and the growth continues, although not a lot. May and June were pretty solid months for the airport, however, Jan, March, and April were terrible months for the airport compared to last year. I am hoping that a solid growth curve will continue so that a discount airline will come to XNA. Also, does anyone know why the spaces go away once I post the numbers below. I have it formatted and it looks good, but once I post the spaces go away, and its about to piss me off.

  15. I'm pretty sure it's the Holiday Inn, which is suppose to be 6 Floors.

Is that suppose to be a holiday inn, or is it going to be a holiday inn express? I personally would like to see a holiday inn, since there are three expresses (that i know of) in NWA.

  16. I'm sure it will approve.

The city leaders will obviously see that this would be an economic gain, not an eyesore.

BTW, welcome to the NWA forum Spartan.

Some see it as an eyesore and some see it as an economic gain. However, the problem is that certain people want to keep Fayetteville "the small town feel" and with the growth its just not going to be possible.

  17. No offense taken here. But you have to consider the fact that many of those hippies and tree huggers have been helping to shape Fayetteville for decades now. Sure, Fayetteville has it's share of problems. But it would certainly seem to appear that there have been a lot of things done right over the years as evidenced by the quality of life here.

The tree ordinance. The sign ordinance. The hillside ordinance. The required dedication of greenspace by developers for city parks. The downtown master plan. Darn those tree huggers--they obviously conceived ideas like that just to hurt devlopers and it had nothing to do with protecting the quality of life here and all of the things that help make Fayetteville what it is! I'm not trying to knock your opinion here just pointing out that there are 2 ways to look at every issue. And, as with most things I believe that the truth lies somewhere in the middle of siding with the tree huggers and siding with the developers.

I like the tree and sign ordinance and they are both something Springdale should look into....Springdale reallly needs the sign ordinance, all those signs lined up on sunset and on 71b look like crap.

  18. Well apparently some of the restaurant/bar owners are now sueing the city of Fayetteville because of the smoke ban. They feel they should be compensated for the money spent on the original ordinance before the interpretation was changed. Sometimes Fayetteville seems top be one messy situation after another. Of course next week the City Council will mett on the Divinity Building which will get people riled up as well.

In other Fayetteville news, the Barber Group donated 30 acres on top of Mt Sequoyah for a park. This 30 acres will be added to the 68 acres that now compise the Mt Sequoyah Woods. I guess sometimes I forget there's still that much wooded area up there.

All of those restrurant owners need to stick a fork in it. I am tired of their gripping about this smoking ban. The people of Fayetteville voted and it was decided. I have lived in Fayetteville for the past 4 years and I have not seen a change since the ban went into place.

  19. There are going to be some exceptions it appears. Here's a list of exceptions. Hotels, private residences, nursing homes, businesses with under 3 employees, bars and restaurants that only serve and employ individuals over the age of 21.

Can anyone tell me why the heck nursing homes are exempt? I saw this in the paper and I couldn't believe that out of all the places, that it will still be allowed in nursing homes, considering that there are quite a few people in nursing homes because of their lovely habit to smoke.

  20. Thanks for the info, now I'm more curious to see what they are planning on doing with the building. :D

I wonder if there's too much beauracracy in the city. Sometimes it seems one commission doesn't know what the other commission is doing. But I still think Fayetteville for now is more progressive. :P

I personally think there is WAY too much beauracracy in Fayetteville. The city is growing, the entire area is growing and the city leaders need to understand this. With all the development going on in Rogers, if Fayetteville is not careful they are not going to be the main city in NWA. If you ask me the only reason Fayetteville is the entertainment city of NWA is because of UofA. Every medium to large city in the US had condos in the downtown city, people like living downtown where all the entertainment is and that is the same for Fayetteville. The city needs to get their act together, decide what they want and stick with it.

  21. There is still fighting over the hillside ordinance. But I'm wondering if this is going to go elsewhere. I saw a quote from one of the people fighting this. He stated, 'ordinances are intended to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens.' This to me sounds like that then if we took this to be the meaning of ordinances then you could attack many of them. How is the sign ordinance protecting the health, safety and welfare of the citizens? Personally I think this is going the wrong direction. You set up a precedent to turn over many of the ordinances and then we just start accepting any development and placing it anywhere like a certain Fayetteville neighbor. I also see a hard time making this type of arguement on ordinances when I think we know there are other cities like Santa Fe that have more restrictive ordinances than Fayetteville. Anyone have any thoughts on any of this?

Personallly I think there are too many ordinances, and many of them are nothing but a waste. The one thing that does surprise me is the location that they are wanting to build the Sams. I am very surprised they are not building it over by the Supercenter off of Joyce, next to where the furniture store is going or somewhere by target. I think they are building it in a weird location to be honest with ya.
