  1. Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but a new place called Johnny's Lunch is moving into the old Olive Express location: Johnny's Lunch website

They have quite a few locations on the east side Michigan and also New York and Ohio. The menu is hot dogs and burgers, similar to Johnny Rockets. I wonder why they chose to be located next to The Dog Pit.

That is interesting - I hope it doesn't have a negative effect on the Dog Pit. I think it's a great addition to downtown, especially for a family friendly option. I hear so many people say they want fun places to take their kids downtown to eat when they're out at the children's museum or ice skating - or even at family events at the VanAndel. It would have been nice though if a different location would have been selected.

  2. Anyone know the status of the Barrington Rd. store in Hoffman Estates, IL? I used to drive by it almost daily when I lived in the area about 3 years ago. The site was prepared, but the store construction had been delayed. Any progress?

Do you mean the store in Rolling Meadows?

  3. Does anyone know how that place is going, business-wise? I've been there a few times, and its always pretty empty.

I'm there about every two weeks, and there's usually quite a few other people in there, even on weeknights. And service has only been slow one time I was there, it was a Saturday evening and they were really really busy.

  4. The last time I was at the Cascade Meijer which was month ago, it's parking lot looked like it was in rough shape. One could see allot of patches and the crack filler stuff used on the highways. (RaildudesDad might know the proper term for that) The Construction prep could be signs of crews about to redo the parking lot. Next time I'm down there, I'll keep my eyes out and camera at the ready.

I was at the Cascade Meijer late yesterday afternoon, and there are quite a few things going on indoors. The grocery aisles where chips, crackers and soda would be found have been moved way to the back of the store past the bulk food items, and that section is covered in plastic. They were also doing something with the section of baby items, which had also been relocated to a different area in the store.

  5. Regarding River Bank Books' visibility, I completely agree. I moved here in August, work downtown and walk around at lunch, and had absolutely no idea that there was a bookstore downtown until December. I probably looked past a sign now and again without it registering. There were certainly no sandwich boards on the sidewalk or displays on Monroe Center to draw me in.

Actually - RBB had a sandwich board. It was chalkboard, and always had really clever phrases and math equations advertising their food and coffee specials as well as newly released book titles. Also...I remember them having chalk drawings on the sidewalk pointing to the Monroe Center entrance.

To add to the fun, I wanted a snack for me and my kid on Saturday morning and went by Grand Central at 11:00am. CLOSED until noon. Makes sense for a normal Saturday, but like these other stores I'd make sure to be open when Festival is and have signs and all kinds of stuff trying to bring people in.

BTW, loved the MC sales pitch!

I have to say, I'm often disappointed in Grand Centrals hours as well. Every time I'm on Monroe Center and they're not open I see people peaking through the window and reading all the signs posted.

  6. The Yahoo article mentions that Meijer has plans for 7 new stores for 2008. None of these are in the W Michigan area that I am aware of. Will most of these be built out of state? Anyone know the locations?

2 in Ohio, 2 in Detroit Suburbs and 1 in Chicago suburbs...not sure about the other 2 yet.

  7. Does anyone know of a good organic/natural weed killer? I have little ones and don't want to use poison. I tried vinegar and soap, but its been a day and nothing yet....

I know there's one called Burn Out...but I think it's a blend of vinegar and lemon juice. Maybe try lemon juice w/ the vinegar instead of soap.

  8. It doesn't seem like there would be a demand for another hotel at M-6 and Byron Center. You have MHV and some businesses/industrial along Gezon to the east. That's about it for the area.

Maybe one will go up around M-6 and Wilson someday, depending on how things develop along Wilson Ave. Byron Township is trying to plan a village center around Wilson just south of M-6, and you're going to see office and/or commercial develop along Wilson north of the highway.

I agree - I work in the area and can't see the demand. Plus, there's a Hampton Inn at 54th and Clyde Park, which is about 2 miles from Metro Health.

  9. Ever dislike it when you give your employer the two weeks (which speaking hardly anyone does in my industry-- they just say "screw you" and leave.) and on your last day make you train replacements. (Trying to get the most out of you before you leave.) Compressing six hours of intensive work into two hours without blowing the place up :) record!

I know how you feel Rizzo, I once left a job, giving my two weeks, and they asked me to stay for two extra weeks so they'd have time to hire someone to replace me and have me train them. If that wasn't bad enough, they told me that if I chose to stay I would still get paid for those two weeks (I should hope so!) but it would be at the entry level rate while I was training, and my benefits would be suspended...gee twist my arm...
