  1. The new Railroad Park has been open since last September and has become a great success. There were dozens of people there on a recent Sunday afternoon - people from all walks of life. I snapped a couple of quick pictures, but to really to see the size and features of the park check out the gallery link below. Visitor photos link: Flickr gallery
  2. Work is underway at the site of the Westin Hotel and Marketplace entertainment district. The projects are set for completion by October 2012. Hotel, entertainment district on target for October 2012 construction completion
  3. It really does looks much, much better. The bricks and formerly rusty ironwork have been painted, the stonework and plaster cleaned and the windows are being replaced now.
  4. Same here, and the renovation now underway at 78 Dexter Ave will do a great job of that. The rendering looks awesome. 78 Dexter
  5. The sale pending sign is still there at the old Montgomery Theater building. No clue here though about the identity of the potential buyer.
  6. A few more of the buildings that the city sold or has for sale: Lower Dexter Ave: Court St.
  7. From another thread: Cool, tell us more about the Idea Factory. When and where is it held?

  12. The vacant Belk Hudson building on Washington Street will be part of a renovation and infill project that will provide 75 loft apartments in downtown Huntsville. Targeting young professionals, the $11.5 million Belk Hudson Lofts are to be completed in mid-2012. A six-story infill building will be built adjacent to the Belk Hudson building. Great project for downtown Huntsville, congratulations! 13. Birmingham-based Cantina Tortilla Grill will open a new restaurant in the Alley this month, likely this week. Today there was a staff meeting or training going on in the restaurant and workers were putting the finishing touches on the eatery's exterior in the alley. Cantina Tortilla Grill seeks Montgomery Alleyway eatery Cantina restaurant: Saza at Commerce St. entrance The Deli at Alley Station, also at Commerce St. entrance
  14. Renovation work is underway at 82 Commerce, and it is sorely needed.
  15. Photos of three of the properties mentioned in post #248: 58 Dexter Ave - not sure which side, could be both. 78 Dexter Ave Corner of S. Perry and Washington Ave The building that was torn down there to make way for a parking deck: I'm guessing that the replacement will be much more attractive.
  16. A few photos of the completed observation tower: View of the nearly finished riverwalk section from the tower. The gravel portion is supposed to be covered with tiles made from recycled tires.
  17. The owners of 82 Commerce Street received a $165,000 grant to update the building's facade, and plan to build ten loft apartments on the upper floors. The building, located at the corner of Commerce and Bibb, is home to the Sous La Terre lounge and Choices Chinese restaurant. Improvements will include cleaning the brick, painting and repairing windows. Grant to help 82 Commerce St. Building on the left:
  18. In April the Design Review Committee approved the Westin hotel and the Marketplace entertainment district. Ground was broken in January and construction should take about 18 months. Thoughts on the design? Good read on the project here: Bhamarchitect's Blog Older articles: $70 million hotel, retail plan proposed near Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Birmingham Mayor William Bell, BJCC officials break ground for hotel, entertainment district project
  19. From WSFA-TV: That's a very aggressive timetable considering how long it's taken to finish what is in place now, but if it happens it would be awesome. WSFA: Improvements coming to Montgomery's riverwalk Riverwalk extension could run from downtown Montgomery to Maxwell AFB
  20. As part of an effort to redevelop lower Dexter Avenue, the city sold several properties to developers in recent weeks. The new owners of 58 Dexter Ave plan to demolish part of the rear of the building and add one or two stories to the original two. The first floor will be retail or restaurant space, with residential and/or office space above. The new owner of 78 Dexter Ave plans to open a Latin-themed restaurant in the corner building. City Drug will remain at 11 Dexter and the new owner plans to live above the drugstore. The empty lot at the corner of S. Perry and Washington Ave, just up the block from 78 Dexter, will be the site of a new four-story building with retail and office space. Kudos to the city for buying these properties and then getting them into the hands of owners who want to do something with them. City sells downtown property for redevelopment
  21. Trying to reduce costs for sure. At least the facades are slightly different, and now they're painted different colors.
  22. The first three homes in Lanier Place are nearly complete.
