  1. I work with a lot of people, probably arund 95%, that live in the suburbs. When they learn that I live in Providence, they almost always ask: "Why? Dont you want to have kids soon? The suburbs are so much more family friendly!" My issues with people asking when i am going to have children aside, I have no idea what they mean. So i asked someone to explain this concept to me. It boiled down to a few things. Remember, these are not MY reasons and I offer no justification Just listing them in no particular order 1. In a subdivision, there is more room for kids to play such as big backyards that can fit swimming pools, and playground equipment. All in the safety of my property. 2. Less traffic and noise 3. Better schools 4. Less crime 5. People ukeep their doors unlocked (as a result of #4) 6. More organized recreation activities All of the suburbanites I speak with just feel a city is great to visit and take thier children to, but would rather have the less dense atmosphere to raise their kids in. To them, this is family friendly.
  2. Dont know anything about the proper time to put up a christmas tree, but I did polish my menorahs yesterday. Have to be nice and shiny for the candle lighting on Friday night.
  3. That is an awesome commercial. For those that are scared of clowns, though quite the little surprise in the middle. Kind of a gratuitous thing...
  4. I had forgotten that Sears now carry's Land's End. That brand has gone downhill though too. However, Sears would be much better than JC Penny..
  5. Being a NY/NJ person, Macy's were always really nice. Living in Boston for 5 years before moving here showed me that Filene's can be just as nice if not more so. Macy's has been declining in the overall shopping experience (merch, service, infrastructure of the stores) for a while now. The PP Filene's, as Cotuit pointed out, never impressed me either. With the new acquisitions, I hope that the Macy's brand is reinvigorated and is restored to its former status. Mostly nostalgia for me. When it gets right down to it, I dont care what the name of the place is. Just make it a more affordable than Nordstroms, yet still classy department store. If Macy's can do it, great. Lord and Taylor to JC Penney really is a downgrade. If they were going to have a store of that caliber in the spot, I would almost have rather seen a Sears. At least then there would almost be a hardware store downtown
  6. Great stuff usually - not always, but usually - is not.
  7. Dogfish head Pumkin Ale..one of my favorites. Only problem is they come in packs of four like most of their brews.
  8. No i would not expect them to even try to please everyone. I simply cant go due to my schedule and thats my own thing. But to say I cant complain, well thats diffferent. 9-5, is that still universal? Almost no one I know works that schedule anymore.
  9. However, if you cannot attend any of the sessions becasue you work long hours or travel for business during these times, you know, the things that make you Joe citizen versus Joe Homeless, you still get to complain The times for these do suck. Hopefully though there will be other opportunities, such as the neighborhood intensive ones.
  10. Yep almost all do. Even the shacks I have seen either have central A/C or big window units. They have air conditioning down to a science. Guy I was on the plane with worked for an auto company going down to test automobile units. He said that is the only place they go lately since it is both blazing and muggy. Luckily, I went from air conditioned hotel, to car, to office. Not too bad. The "coldest" it got was at like 4am when it got down to 92. Makes me love RI weather.
  11. Not now it isnt. It is humid in Phoenix this time of year. its what causes monsoon season there. Had a decent one tuesday night while I was there. So imagine 118 degrees AND humidity.
  12. I have had good experience with the Waring brand of small fryolators.
  13. Huh congrats to me...so what do I get? Balloons? A pat on the back? I am honored... How does one check that anyway?
  14. Hard to say if it was the driver or a jackass in a car like you mention as there are no details. I should not have assumed it was the driver. Silly of me. you bring upa good point of watching when loading a truck. Most truck drivers do watch and double check. Safety is pretty important in general to these drivers.
  15. I'd have to disagree, my grandfather was a truck driver. Long haul and short haul, 18 wheeler. You need to go fast and dangerous to tip a truck. And as a truck driver, you should know better. Most do. But I guess this driver was an exception.
  16. I drove by it today @ 7:15am and I will give the police and fire dept credit. They had traffic moving. The crash was at exit 29, and at exit 28 I was still moving at a decent clip. Quite an impressive sight, dont think I have seen a tractor trailer flipped over on its side before. It both awed me and disturbed me that someone was going that fast in a truck that it would flip over like that. Anyone know if the driver made it? Cant find anything about it, but it did not look encouraging.
  17. The Armory is extremely dog friendly and there are plenty of places where a single woman would feel safe. I know everyone does fixate on the East Side, but there are plenty of other neighborhoods that are thriving in Providence.
  18. I think he should have said Boston "area". Let see. Back Bay, JP, Brighton and Allston immediately spring to mind. Extend it to Cambridge and Central, Harvard, Porter, Davis square fall into that. Another comment regarding Rising Sun. Between the existing communities of Eagle Square and Rising Sun and the under construction areas of The Plant and the Armory Properties development next door, Valley street will clean up nicely.
  19. I live in the Armory but I do not have children. Only dogs. However, three of my neighbors have children less than 6 months. Went to Julian's last night for the WBNA party/fundraiser/get together thing and the place was lousy with babies. At least 20 young couples with babies. The Armory has rough patches (what neighborhood doesn't??), but it gets better all the time. The armory park is a great place, nice playground for kids, lots of dogs etc. Broadway and Westminster, the two main thoroughfares in the district are improving continually as well. Also walking distance to Atwells and all the shops they have to offer. I'd say if you are looking for a more urban feel, and more house for the money, the Armory district is a great choice. If you are interested in the armory, I'd suggest Armory Properties for realty. They know the area, their office is right on westminster, andthey are passionate about the area. Disclaimer: Bought my house through them after trying a few other agencies who tried to steer me away from the armory as well.
