  1. I agree with the corners needing some sort of interaction, and focal point, a "weenie" in themed entertainment architectural terms. One example that came to my mind is this conical glass spiral stairway at Roppongi Hills in Japan:

    roppongi_hills.jpg

At night, the cone glows and captures your attention, below is a public plaza to into the labyrinth of a shopping mall.

I can't find better photos of it...

  2. Florida can't touch Silicon Valley, but out of the entire State, Orlando is in a much better position than Tampa and South Florida. Coastal Florida is too centered on tourism and the beach. With Orlando's growth centered on NASA, Lockheed, Imagineering at Disney, and video games at EA, there is a lot of tech jobs in the area that you don't find in other parts of the state. Siemens and Oracle are also major employers in the area.

Please don't include Imagineering in our list of tech jobs. They're based out of Glendale. and most everything is outsourced these decades.

  3. What kind of Commercial would you like to see on the shores?

Though I like Cloudship's "no-chain" idea, in this town right now we need "chains" to bring people. Along the shore I would make it similar to Hollywood's The Grove at Farmers Market. The theme park-esque stylised shopping district located beside the historic Famers Market (Fairfax) really seemed to draw a crowd throughout the day and night. The street car is a nice touch as well. I think we could definitely pull something like this off downtown, with bigger anchors such as a Barnes & Noble, Cinema, restaurants, Apple Store, etc. Hell, place a fountain show in Lake Lucerne and we can rival Vegas and give Dr.Phillips' new development a run for their money. Other retail that could be places in my hypothetical urban fantasy are World Market, Whole Foods/Trader Joes/Wild Oats/or whatever that other new SoCal "it" Organic Market is, Container Store, CB2, Intelligentsia Coffee, Urban Outfitters, EQ3, BJ's Brewhouse, Elephant Bar, Metropolitan Deluxe, UNIQLO... then scatter some indies throughout the 'plex. I know this place could be hyped up enough to be Orlando's "it" place. It would have to be more than one level, definitely... and unfortunately, yet welcomed would be the tourists ($$$).

  4. There can be so many pro-Commuter rail arguments, especially in a time of environmental and energy concerns.

Leave it to Polk county. Surprised a Senator from there passed the reading exam. :dontknow:

  5. the more I think about it, when you think of this place tourism-wise, we really do have a great product. Specifically, we have 4 distinct complexes integrated with water taxi transit (Universal, MK resort area, EPCOT resort area, Downtown Disney resort area), and the Monorail linkup with, in essence, two of those resort areas.

Just think what a water taxi system would be like if they built one to connect Lake Lucerne, to Lake Eola, to Lake Ivanhoe? THAT would put downtown Orlando on the map. Especially if retail and restaurant were integrated along the shores. Lake Lucerne from the south shores to the north would make a great lakefront dining and strolling experience with views of downtown. There is already residential close-by. Add some mixed-use midrises and BAM! On the way to Eola there could be a stop at the PAC. We already have a few hotels on Lake Ivanhoe and it would add business to the Antique District.

Dammit... did someone just wake me?

  6. went to eat Bento Sushi Cafe yesterday and all the power was on ;) great food at great prices, things are really starting to pick up at the plaza

corona cigar is coming along nicely...i love how the inside looks like the outside of its dr phillips location

No, it's a lot nicer than the outside of the DP location--- it looks more like the inside of the Mexico pavillion at Epcot. Hopefully this Corona won't have the same pretentious DBs hanging around outside as DP has.

  7. I didnt realize that Spice downtown gives 10% discount to residents of Post Parkside, Paramount, and Waverly. And its 10% off on the entire ticket.

On a down note, it took them 20 minutes for my burger, and the place was dead.

Good to know next time I'm there with one of my friends who lives in the Waverly--- either that, or your server was hitting on you.

  8. You forgot the world class dog fighting as well. I heard Michael Vick was looking at relocating Bad Newz Kennels Headquarters to the College Park area...

LOL. Are you sure it wasn't in College Park? One of my friends was a cop out there and the stories I've heard--- wow. No wonder he hates Atlanta. AirTran's office is right on the border of College Park and are the disorganised.

  9. Well said. AirTran's close proximity to College Park (Collipark to Atlanteans and hip hop fans) allow the company to pay little for their efficient corporate staff, and allow the corporate leaders to enjoy lovely south Atlanta. College Park is the Atlanta hub of high culture.

  10. Funny you mention Sea World. During my weekly trip to the Hideway I heard from one of the contractors working out there that 1 or 2 of the pools somehow started to pop out of the ground. Didn't have anything to do with groundwater, but rather the water pumps. Supposedly, they are going to have to pull out a foot thick mat of concrete and rebar and start over again.

Also heard that someone forgot to specify everything handling saltwater to be stainless steel....

edit: This is at Aquatica, of course.

No, this is BEC of course. Doesn't surprise me with their lack of planning, foresight, and cost-cutting attitude. Hope the new pak doesn't leak into the aquifers like the saltwater pool at Discovery Cove.

  11. ummm hello.... ewwwwwwwwwwww

And typically Gayborhoods nestle into areas with homes begging to be restored. Parramore dosnt have that.

What gay wouldn't love to restore an old crack house? C'mon. "Seize the day. Parramore to gay!"

  12. uh why is il gelatone closing?

i hope they relocate somewhere where rent isn't astronomical maybe. . . any word on that?

Rent is one reason... business went down when the parking garage rates went up. Apparently Orlandoans don't know how to walk from a few blocks away?

They won't be relocating to a retail location, but instead will be making their gelatto wholesale from down in Kissimmee behing Pacino's (who own Wildside). In the meantime, grab as much as you can! As for their paninis, we're SOL. :(

If they are closing, I wonder if Tijuana Flats will occupy both suites. The 4 n Summerlin seems smaller then the place they are in now.

Yes, Tijuana Flats will be occupying both suites.

wow . . . this is the saddest news of my day. the lady at gelatone makes the best paninis with extreme attention to detail, and she is so nice! and they just introduced the frozen yogurt . . . i don't get it. their paninis are five-times better than those at armoa. god, if i didn't have plans at the celt for lunch today, i would definitely be there. this might be worth venturing there on my day off tomorrow just to tell them goodbye. :-(

Apparently their yogurt recipe is the same as... some other famous yogurt, and Starbucks has invested in it. I've heard about Aroma's paninis and how outrageously expensive they are.

  13. Bad news guys... if any of you like Il Gelatone in Thornton Park; Sunday will be your last opportunity for a delicious cup of gelatto or an affogatto with Segafreddo espresso. Then there's their paninis I will miss! I for one am going to miss them, as they're such a nice change for the norm and their product is SO good. Swing by and give them your farewell! I'm going to be buying a few pints before Sunday!

As for ROHO, anyone else heard anything? Swung through downtown to go there in the first place to be disappointed to find them closed!

Also, what's this? Infusion added a shop inside Urban Think?! Awesome!

  14. 40 OZ? Must be 'urban' clothing.

I don't know, the style of the sign looks like it may belong to the same owners as the EGOLab (store/salon on Orange across from The Plaza), who also own the salon on Central beside Spice. Quoting an idiot I heard walking down the street a couple weeks ago: "Who wants to eat in a restaurant next to a salon?!" WTF? I love suburbanites. Perhaps he walked past the model of Tradition Towers and asked his friends: "What is this, condos for ants?"
