  1. Murfreesboro's transit system will be called "Rover" according to the DNJ. The naming process consisted of citizens submitting proposed names for the service. Apparently the name was thought up by a four-year-old girl. The article says one of the proposed names that didn't make the cut was "Firefly." It's great to know that my wife and I aren't the only Browncoats in Murfreesboro... :shades:

  2. As many of you are probably aware, MTSU lost to Oklahoma 59-0 yesterday. While the points disparity is staggering, I'm still quite optimistic about the remainder of our season. So far we certainly have had our problems offensively, but we've also beaten the teams we absolutely needed to beat. As cool as it is to play a team as good as Oklahoma, it is far better that we go out and beat North Texas on Saturday. That would take us to 2-0 in conference play. Right now winning the Sun Belt Conference should be the target for our season.

  3. I just wanted to bump this thread with some news that probably everyone already knows: MTSU beat Tennessee Tech 44-0 last Thursday night. That's the good news. The bad news is that it was only 3-0 at the half. The offense still needs some work, but that second half was sure electrifying! Go Blue Raiders!

  4. Thanks for another great photo set, Fallingwater. On the subject of the naked-eye observatory: I don't get it. I don't recall ever being able to see a star other than our own sun from the campus of MTSU. At night light pollution is intense, and for good reason: MTSU is not a rural campus. It's just a brief ride down Main Street from downtown Murfreesboro and is surrounded by housing and retail. I just don't understand the practicality of a naked-eye observatory in that type of environment.

  5. edb2n, I could tell you were just joking, so no hard feelings here. I recognize the intent behind your line of thinking, and it is certainly not without its practicality. I oppose modern planning and zoning for two reasons. First, as I have articulated already I believe it infringes on personal property rights, and secondly I firmly believe that when you give the government and inch of power they take a mile. We haven't seen it here yet to my knowledge, but just look at what went down in New London, Connecticut.

  6. ^ From an aesthetic standpoint a lot of what you mentioned sounds great, but the government has no right to tell property owners how they can develop their property. It's a great tyranny that local governments get away with telling a property owner what types of materials he can and can't build his building out of. We may think our neighbor's metal shed is ugly, but it's his property to do with as he pleases.

  7. Progress is now quite evident on The Avenue project. As you drive along Medical Center Parkway you can now see that two buildings are rising toward the back of the development along the I-24 side. At this point they are at the frame and cinderblock stage of construction. You can get a pretty clear view of the construction from I-24 as you pass by. It's good to see these buildings go up!

  8. ^ That definition can't be universally accurate regarding the Interstate designation. I-475 is nothing more than a bypass around Macon, GA. For that matter I-285 is just a bypass/loop around Atlanta. They are both part of the system of Interstates.

  9. Hey, believe me, I'm glad that MTSU and D1 football is here too; But I bet if you had an opening game at Neyland with 30% of the seats empty, it wouldn't be viewed as positive.

The difference here (to which you already alluded) is that if 30% of the seats at Neyland were empty for a home opener, it would mean the Tennessee football program had fallen a long way. At this stage in the game, the fact that only 30% of Floyd Stadium's seats were empty represents positive motion, relatively speaking. That's why the attendance at the FIU game is such a big deal.

  10. The attendance figure is big news because it's only the seventh largest crowd in school history, and because as I understand it there's been some trouble getting the local community to support the team with their attendance. The 7-6 win doesn't sound exciting, and indeed it was mostly a defensive game, but given that we hadn't won a home game the first game of the season in a few years, it was a pretty big deal. That not only is a big deal in terms of MTSU's standing in the Sun Belt Conference this season, but also because it may mean higher attendance at the next home game.

I'm a student at MTSU and a resident of Murfreesboro, so I'm a litle biased toward the Blue Raiders. To me though it's just very cool to have a division I-A college foortball team in town.

  11. Was anyone else at the home opener for the Blue Raiders last week? My wife and I are season ticket holders, and stayed for all four quarters. It wasn't the prettiest win, but a win's a nice way to start the year and the Rick Stockstill era at MTSU. It was also great to see so many people at the game. It was the seventh-highest attended game in school history if I recall what the DNJ said correctly. I think it's great to have a NCAA Division I-A college football team right here in our own city, and I really hope the city will continue to support the team like the fans did last week at Floyd Stadium. The Blue Raiders have their next home game on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6 PM against Tennessee Tech. Go Blue Raiders!

  12. Here's a link to an article posted Sunday to the Web page of the Daily News Journal:

If built this would be the second Publix to come to Murfreesboro. A tiny picture of a rendering depicting a possible look for the new store is included with the article. According to the article it may eventually be located at the corner of St. Andrews Dr. and New Salem Hwy. The first Publix to come to Murfreesboro will be located at the corner of Old Fort Pkwy and Rucker Ln. The article also mentions the possibility that more Publix stores will be coming to the Boro.

As a former Floridian who already loves Publix, I am very excited to see them come to our city. We seem to be mostly a Kroger town (I currently shop at Kroger usually), and it will be good to see another big chain come to town. I just hope one day they build a Publix near my house!

  13. Well, I honestly rarely watch local news on TV, so I can't speak to the Murfreesboro coverage on Nashville news stations. While it would be cool to have a station that focused on Murfreesboro news, it seems like it probably wouldn't be a successful venture. Murfreesboro's growing quickly, but I don't think we currently need a news station. Besides, Nashville provides us with our local affiliates for the big networks. It would be redundant to include another one here in Murfreesboro. Maybe a better solution would be to have a half hour show on one of the Nashville stations that focuses on Murfreesboro news.
