  1. Elwood Thompson's is Richmond's premier "organic" food store adjacent to Carytown at the end of Elwood Avenue (the extension of West Main Street) and Thompson Street, a location which gave the store its name. The intro of Fresh Market in the Richmond scene apparently has not made much of a dent in ET's sales.

Ellwood's & Fresh Market really don't have that much overlap in products. Ellwood's tends to have local and organic foods. Fresh Market has some organic goods, but most of their stuff tends more towards high-end natural foods (and, yes, there's a significant difference between "natural" and "organic").

Whole Foods, on the other hand, will be in direct competition. I suspect that's why Ellwood's is playing up the local connections (as they should).

  2. Guys believe it or not but Oil Companies will not carry an environmental product you know why. Here are the reasons

    1. If you were to replace oil with a more efficient product you would have to replace the oil tanks underground the gas stations with brand new tanks that have no oil on them. Where there are millions of gas stations in our country.2. It would require to much government and local legislation for gas stations to be replaced with green products.

Underground tanks get replaced all the time. That's perhaps the worst argument against moving away from oil I've ever heard. Companies will sell whatever makes them money. Today it's oil; tomorrow, it could be hydrogen or deionized water or used cooking grease. Besides, I thought you were the big Republican? Any good Republican knows that there's no reason for government interference in such matters.

    3. I dont get how every gas station in the country would even go green theres too many gas stations on this country for our country to go green. It would require too much to go green. People wouldnt be able to get every place in america to have green stations instead of gas stations. Plus oil rigs out in the ocean would have to be demolished and it would cost to much to go green.

    4. With all this happening it would just cost way too much to go green with the replacement of everything and with the demolition of oil rigs out in the ocean. Plus im not willing to pay my tax dollars for a bunch of stupidity to go green and for my country to be in worse shape than it already is.

I honestly don't get what your point here is (maybe it's because I didn't go to Henrico County schools?). Do you really think reducing our dependence on oil, most of which is controlled by entities who are either borderline or outright hostile towards the US, will leave "your" country in worse shape?

Comre- Don't get smart with me. Because im not one that uses correct grammar unless its for something important. Plus I am a very good speller. Because I dont see anywhere where I spelled anything wrong. So dont get smart with me its just a waste of your time and my time.

I'm not ComRE, but when you call people stupid for not agreeing with you, don't be surprised when people bite back, especially when you make yourself such an easy target.

  3. I had always figured that Wachovia Securities would eventually leave Richmond for Charlotte. The St. Louis buy-out, or buy-in (I don't remember who acquired whom), surprised me.

No surprise here. I worked for them (they were then First Union Securities) back when they bought Everen Securities, and it was only through last-minute lobbying that the whole operation didn't up and move to Chicago. I understand a move to NYC was seriously considered during the Prudential merger as well.

The Richmond 'loyalty' died with James Wheat.

  4. If you have the time and stomach space, add Maldini's to the Southside list. It's off of Forest Hill across the street from O'Toole's.

Maldini's makes a good pie. It's part of the Piccola/Mary Angela's family, so expect a similar product. Another new place is due from them soon at Sheppard & Park, which will be great for that little retail stretch.

  5. I still think they are talking about this behind closed doors with the general public not knowing. You saw all the Nimbys with the Shockoe Bottom Proposal. I think they have decided to discuss it behind closed doors. So that people won't go crazy about it again like they did with Shockoe Bottom.

Call me a NIMBY, but I'd rather my elected officials not commit to spending my tax dollars behind closed doors.

  6. Tommy. I thought that road along the west side of WBV was John Rolfe Pkwy, but when driving the crooked and curvy street I swear it said Three Chopt Road. Was I seeing things? A newer and improved Three Chopt also runs below WBV and intersects with Pump Road.

Right now, John Rolfe Parkway only exists between Lauderdale Dr and Ridgefield Parkway.

  7. There's talk starting of placing a monument to Oliver Hill on Monument Avenue. I can't think of a more fitting place for one.

I'd welcome it, so long as it's a better piece than the Ashe statue.

I just don't look forward to the SCV (et al)'s inevitable beotching and moaning...

  8. Don't forget Burt there was another story in there about the Westbury Shopping Center next to Douglas Freeman. It mentioned there would be a Starbucks where part of Mio's Pizzaria was. But Mio's will still be in the shopping center I hear.

    Not according to the article.

The center's transformation means a change to one tenant: Mio's restaurant closed Friday.

The restaurant was there since February 1998. (Mio's took the space that Westbury Pharmacy had used until the pharmacy moved across the street into larger space.)

Mio's owners, Ben and John Beale, said their lease was expiring. "We are ready to move on," Ben Beale said.

The center's owner wanted to take back part of Mio's space - the area closest to the school where Mio's bar area had been.

The brothers said they needed that space to make it financially viable. "We didn't want to commit to a long-term lease," John Beale said.

  9. Dana forgoes luxury dining for some down home eatin' in this week's Times Dispatch review.

PARADISE DINER in Stratford Hills Shopping Center at 2845 Hathaway Road (tel. 804/320-1611) has an extraordinarily friendly staff serving up omelets, grits, pan cakes, French toast and assorted sides. Junior Joseph, one of the greeters, may also be the owner if I read the review correctly. He was formerly at KAREN'S on West Broad near the Science Museum. I thought I had heard that KAREN herself was going to open a place across the James.

Anyway, PARADISE DINER serves daily from 6AM 'til 3PM.

    Tab for two: $15.

I eat breakfast there frequently on the weekends. And, apparently, so does most of the Forest Hill corridor.

The couple who owned Karen's Diner sold that business to another family member and opened Paradise, bringing a fair number of staff and patrons with them.

  10. i think that he hit the nail on the head... im sorry but most people who really should be involved are not going to attend a meeting at plant zero... just a little too snooty in my opinion.

And you've spent how much time around the Plant Zero folks?

  11. According to channel 6, White Oak Village will be having its groundbreaking tomorrow and should list more stores.

    From Channel 6:

In the fall of 2008, East Enders will be able to shop at stores like Target, Sam's Club, PetSmart, Circuit City, Lowe's and JCPenney without driving too far. Developers also announced a Hyatt Place Hotel will also be added to the site [...] Dozens of new stores will also open in the open-air mall, and those names will be announced as soon as they sign-on.
  12. Happy Independence Day!

And by the way... other than Plan 9.. what else is a music store? I know Fye is in a couple malls and I can't find BK Music... where else?

BK Music is right across Midlo from Cloverleaf Mall. Used to be a Peaches way back when.

Mall stores like FYE are a waste. Prices are even more expensive and selection is limited to only the most popular items. If you can't find it at Plan 9, order it online from Amazon, Insound, etc.

  13. Seems like a smart move for the Wine Gourmet since Ukrops doesn't sell wine. I was thinking I'd have to go to Kroger to buy wine, now I can just go next door. Glad to see something else go up in Ivy Market as well.

Here in Richmond, there's a small cottage industry of wine & beer shops opening in the same center as (or very close by) Ukrops stores. I suspected someone would open one up at Ivy Market.

Has anyone actually been in Wine Gourmet? Roanoke's severely lacking in quality beer merchants and it would be great if they were able to fill that niche somewhat.

  14. I agree, but unless they manage to add another river crossing between Powhite and Chippenham, it is only going to get worse :(

I cross via Chippenham at least twice daily, and most of the time it's not very crowded at all. It's puzzling to me, as Huguenot can be at a dead crawl while traffic flies down the Willey. I realize it might not be the preferred route, but if a few folks shifted their routes a bit west, their commutes would be easier.

  15. Everyone loves the She Crab, but I'm not a big fan. However, the Thai Chicken Noodle rocks! And personally, I love the bread. Texas Toast it is, but how can you not love big thick bread with lots of butter toasted in?

Yeah, the Thai chicken noodle is pretty good. I still think the lobster bisque is the best, but the mushroom (only occasionally served as a special, not a regular menu item) is great too.

  16. I wonder how much authenticity the food had lost in translation, if any at all. Pakistani cuisine is very similar to a lot of cuisine of India, and most of the Pakistani food that I've tried was, in general, more flavorful and spicey than Indian K'Rajah's. However, I noticed that the majority of the customer were of Indian descent, so perhaps that's a complement to it's fidelity to the original.

India K'Raja is OK, but that's about it. I much prefer Royal India and Malabar.

Shish Kabob, which is tucked in behind Fuddruckers at Broad/Parham, is a quite good Pakistani place (and perhaps the only one in town).

  17. Interesting you bring him up because I just saw an ad in Richmond Magazine for Carytown Seafood and I was puzzled. I remember reading Tlusty was no longer doing the hamburger thing, instead taking over CSaI and trying to make it the next Limani. However, the ad I saw listed someone else as the executive chef.

Weird- it wasn't too long ago that he went there. Between the disaster that was Duro, the shelved burger place and now this, I'm beginning to wonder if he's got some personal issues going on.
