  1. I always felt the same way about both getting out onto Deaderick or Charlotte and the confusing keypad. It was always an adventure getting in and out of there. But verrry convenient.

I really hope this project is realistic. Here is a photo I took on Friday from above showing the double helix. I used to park in this garage and my experience wasn't particularly positive. The garage will definitely need some upgrades if it were to serve high end commercial tenants.

Also I had never experienced a more complicated elevator button pad than this :)

It's like this past two weeks I've noticed a record amount of cranes going up in the 440 inner loop? Is the month of July or August of this year having a record amount of cranes going up or has there been another period where so many cranes have gone up in such a short span? It's really insane to say the least. We're finally seeing the full effect of the Nashville growth from the 2016-present period

Just saw this post and have been looking for a place to say that recently, I've counted 20+ cranes from my front windows; there may be a bunch more I can't see from here. Still, impressive!

For some reason this font/design reminds me of a Ouija board, which seems ironic considering this is a Lifeway building. Anybody else see it?

I hadn't seen that, but now that you mention it ..   :) What caught my eye was the pool table in the break room. That would have gone over like a lead balloon in my fundamentalist upbringing. Amazing how things change over 40-50 years!

What I really liked was the grand piano on the balcony ..  since I've sold my real piano and now have an electric, I may have to stroll over sometime and do a little southern gospel for them. If the roof doesn't crash in on me when I darken the doorway! :whistling:

But is the food any good? I tried ML Rose yet again and yuck, yet again. I'm not that hard to please but have not tried Corner Pub.

Funny - I went to the new ML Rose in Capitol View and got an indifferently prepared hamburger and fries to take home with me.  It was nearly $15.00 out the door and I would have been a lot more satisfied if I'd gone to Wendy's. Haven't been back to ML Rose

  6. Channel 4 reporting that Nashville will become home to Amazon's East Coast Hub of Operations

    Quote

Amazon's new "Operations Center of Excellence" will be located at a 1 million-square-foot facility north of the Gulch where the Lifeway building was previously located. The 15-acre mixed-use development will house tech and management functions, including customer fulfillment, customer service and transportation.

    Quote

According to the governor's office, this is the largest jobs announcement in the history of Tennessee and is projected to created more than 13,000 jobs in the state. Every direct job created by the project is expected to create an additional 1.6 jobs.

Who knew there would be an East Coast Hub of Operations *and* two HQs? I had heard on this morning's news that the governor had a major announcement today.

  7. Agreed about the Maxwell House -- there's nothing wrong with it, but location wise, not bad, being a straight shot down to those state parking lots..  it's going to be tough on everybody to walk from there, considering you have the kids with you. Getting across James Robertson won't be so bad - just a long haul with the kids..

As for the courthouse lawn, not a bad idea.. and there will be lots of stuff going on there beforehand. The kids will enjoy playing in the pools there.

We walked down a couple of years ago and staked out spots at the top of 1st Avenue around the Gay St intersection and that was pretty good. The earlier you get there the better. Still, I'd bet it would be better than taking the kids down into the middle of everything!

Hope you all have a blast! It really is the greatest show on Earth! Be sure to bring a radio so you can tune in the symphony playing along with the fireworks..

  8. Definitely consider parking near the Farmers Market if you can - say, in the state employee parking lots just on the North side of the railroad tracks..  it's not a bad walk at all and you'll be glad you did it when you see all the poor schmoes trying to get out of the parking garages and lots downtown.

If you park in that area, you'll be in your car and out of town before the ones down there even get to the interstate...

  9. Thanks, for the graphic briefing.  Even though it's not pictured, about 10 years ago I started paying more attention to St. Mary of the Seven Sorrows Church at 5th and Charlotte.  While it's not the most beautiful or elaborate church in downtown, what holds my interest is the fact that it was designed by Adolphus Heiman, who also had done the former Children's Museum (Lindsley Hall of Peabody Normal College; UofNshvl Literary Dept; Hospital for Federal Officers), and the Belmont Mansion, among many other structures which remain extant.  Unfortunately, his house at 900 Jefferson Street is long gone, although his namesake city street (Heiman St.) remains intact, except for what the interstate took away.

I've seen the historical marker for Heiman's house but this is the first photo I've seen of it.  What a shame there aren't still lots of those little gems along that street!

  10. A couple other that could be added are: Holy Trinity Episcopal at Lafayette and Sixth, and Ocean Way Recorders at corner of 17th and Edgehill from a repurposed sanctuary built in the late 1800's.

The Vine Street Temple Synagogue was really gorgeous.  Was the only Jewish fellowship in Nashville from 1877 until 1955.  The nine Byzantine turrets were incredibly unique for this area.  Sure wish someone would've had the vision to keep it.  See it here:

    http://www.nashvillewebreview.com/automat/nashville/churches/synagog/VineStreet2.htm

The church where Ocean Way is now used to be Tony Alamo's cult/church. I worked in the travel agency behind it at the corner of 16th and Edgehill.

I'll never forget the day the federal agents swooped down on that place.. the area was afloat in big, black SUVs and there were dark-sunglass-wearing suits all over the place, talking into their cuffs, before they went in and took over. I don't think they found Tony's dead wife that day - maybe she had already been resurrected?

That was an exiting day, for sure!

  11. With the announcement of Alaska Airlines starting daily non-stop, year-round service from BNA to Seattle, there now only remains one significant gap in the MNAA's quest to have nonstop flights from Nashville to key domestic cities.

The remaining gap is non-stop service to San Francisco (SFO) and the likely airline to fly that route is United Airlines.  At the moment United has a shortage of mainline aircraft, but the presence of Nissan and Bridgestone in Nashville should put pressure on United (or Virgin America) to launch a nonstop flight to SFO.  United operates a major international hub at SFO providing important connections to the Asia-Pacific region.  Southwest Airlines will resume its daily non-stop, year-round flights to Oakland (OAK) in June.

I find it interesting that Los Angeles (LAX) is served with no less than 5 non-stop flights per day on 3 different airlines (American, Delta and Southwest).   One of the American Airlines flights is a red-eye.  That's a lot of capacity so the airlines must be doing quite well on the BNA-LAX route.

With regard to United Airlines, we learned yesterday that they're replacing their pint-sized regional jets with real grown up jets -  I don't know if foretells anything about possible non-stop service to the west coast, but to me it hinted at a stronger presence here..

  12. I take it that you might be on Ireland, where that hill crests.  That indeed is (was) a fun view, whenever I'd drive up the hill, even though I always had to stop the car and look back (on the one-way).

    -==-

That's right - we're at the top of the hill - great views...  been there since day one 11 years ago..  It's tucked away there so that you have to know how to get there in order to go through. Thanks for going the right direction on that one way, by the way!

  13.

The silver lining, I think, for the Encore owners who bought for the views is that what they might lose in property value from blocking developments will surely be made up by the attractions those developments bring to the area.

I think you're right about that..  with the new development going in on Rosa Parks across from the Farmers' Market, we're disappointed to be losing the view of the market and the Bicentennial Mall beyond (in fact, we're afraid we're going to feel closed in)...  but we are looking forward to a bump in the property values, so we're certainly not complaining!

  14. I recall Publix mentioning they aren't ruling out opening at two separate locations. "...Publix store in Capitol View would not preclude another store in Midtown or elsewhere in urban Nashville — meaning this does not appear to be an either/or scenario for the grocer." The store in Midtown would be smaller, whereas the  Capitol View location would be full service.

now that you mention it, I seem to recall that too..   It'll be nice to have two options at last if that turns out to be the case...

  15. Since we're talking about grocery stores. . . there was a big discussion on Nextdoor about the Rosa Parks Kroger.  Apparently, there are 3 tiers of Krogers:  Value, Mainstream, and Upscale.  Current it's classified as Mainstream, but a neighbor in the business broke the news that the store is being reclassed (downgraded?) to a "value" store.  This means, among other things, that there will be more space devoted to Kroger brand products, and less for national brands.  Additionally, space of natural/organic/health food will be reduced.  This caused quite a stir in the surrounding neighborhoods on the board.

Here's what I took away from the Nextdoor discussion:

-New sandwich station in the deli

-New Chicken Case in the deli for fried, baked and roasted chickens

-Other new cases in deli that will allow for better product mix

-New 8 ft. Sushi case for in store made sushi

    -New deli cheese case

-Additional product offerings throughout the Deli/Bakery area

-New 8 Ft Service Seafood Case

-Other new cases in Meat Dept

    -New floors in produce

-New bins and tables in produce

-All new Nature’s Market Nutrition Destination area

-Added new 5 door case of frozen nutrition

-Added additional 8 ft. to refrigerated nutrition

-Expanded dairy in the grocery department…additional 20’ added

    -Expanded beer set

-Additional new cases and fixtures throughout the store

    -New décor

-The store will have a full service seafood department when the remodel is complete!

Although, the discussion about Value vs Mainstream, etc seemed pretty up in the air - no definitive response from the Kroger rep, but it does seem odd that a "Value" store would have  sushi and full service seafood departments.

I see a lot of negative comments about the Rosa Parks Kroger here and in other forums (especially Nextdoor!) and I don't get it. We've been shopping there for nearly 11 years and have seen lots of positive changes in the store over that time. When we first moved to the neighborhood, the store was run-down, unclean and loaded up with sullen, unhelpful employees.

Something has happened because the service and overall attitude of the staff at the store has improved markedly; I never have any problem getting assistance from most everybody that works there..

The place is a mess right now, with all the construction going on, but that's to be expected, I suppose. They can't exactly close down the store to do the remodel. I remember when they were remodeling the Kroger in Donelson 15 or so years ago and it was a mess, too..

I had hoped we would get a Harris Teeter in Capitol View and that that would cause Kroger to up their game..  looks like that's not going to happen and if Publix goes in on Demonbreun Hill, who's to say what we'll get. Could be a Whole Foods for all I know -- which means we'll continue shopping at our Kroger for the most part!

  16. I don't think this has been posted here, so I'll link it. Willis is looking at relocating 3500 jobs from higher cost locations to lower cost locations. In their release to investors they mentioned Nashville and Mumbai as two low cost locations. Maybe they were just using Nashville as an example, but I would suspect something more substantive is going on behind he scenes for them to name nashville in their release. Maybe Eakin will get a new tenant and Nashville will have its very own Willis Tower.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-29/willis-to-cut-relocate-staff-as-profit-misses-estimates.html

There's some irony - when they were Willis Corroon, they built their taj mahal out in Century City and ended up leasing then selling it and moving into the Genesco building, of all places...    although, to be fair, they transformed their floor at Genesco into something pretty special! Now to think they might be back in the big building business!
