  1. Definitely bring her through Elmhurst. Specifically, bring her through these particular areas. While these areas might border each other, each has a different feel in my opinion. I live on Grosvenor, which is close to Chalkstone and more similar to your neighborhood. These other areas are quieter, less diverse (or at least lack the "cultures" that like their streets littered and their music loud enough to hear 3 blocks away).

The area surrounded by Smith St to the north (or even Wabun or Whitford to the north), River Ave to the east, Academy Ave to the west, and Pleasant Valley Pkwy to the south. This is my favorite area of Elmhurst. We almost bought a house here, but it was too much house for us and just out of our price range (we were looking for a purchase price of no more than $200k).

The area surrounded by Eaton St to the north, Hilltop Ave to the east, River Ave to the west, and Smith St to the south. This is close to PC, but very few, if any, students actually live in that area.

The area surrounded by Admiral St and Isabella Ave to the north, River Ave to the East, Gentian and Smith to the west, and Eaton St to the south. I used to live in this area on Sharon St.

All of Gentian is also pretty nice until the very end near Admiral St. The area between Smith St and Mount Pleasant Ave south of where they intersect and north of LaSalle Academy is also nice, but with few walkable amenities. The area between Mount Pleasant Ave and Academy Ave just south of LaSalle is, again nice, but not quite as nice as the 3 areas I mentioned above. In those 3 areas, you'll find lots of young families on those areas. I don't know of you guys use RIPTA at all, but the beauty of Elmhurst is the peace and quiet and the close proximity to the bus routes in pretty much the whole neighborhood. It's a great neighborhood for people who want the amenities of the city but the quiet and roominess of the suburbs (though it's not as roomy as going to the outer suburbs).

  2. So the neighborhoods I want to know more about, are Smith Hill, Elmhurst, and maybe some of the surrounding areas - Mount Pleasant, Wanskuck, Charles, Mount Hope, etc. What do people think about the best places to find single-family homes in the low 200,000s, with a yard, walkable amenities, safe, clean, etc.? I liked Fox Point to an extent, but there isn't much for sale there. I think the far east side (Wayland) is probably too expensive. Parts of the east side near Miriam might be ok, but also expensive unless you're near some of the shadier areas around Camp St. - or maybe the reputation there is changing.

  3. What's up? A couple of guys over at the Hartford Forum and myself were just wondering what happened to the PVD Forum. Why is it suddenly so dead over here? Are you guys on a different site or what?

I don't post here very often anymore because I really don't like the new design of the site. We've also got some new blogs where most of the action seems to have gone.

  4. Does anyone know if you can post pictures from Snapfish.com? My wife has an account with them and I uploaded a bunch of pictures to their site, but got an error when I tried to insert one in a post here.... can anyone recommend the easiest way to post pictures to UP, I have a bunch of construction photos and other misc. ones from this weekend? Thanks in advance.

Snapfish is not a great site for photo sharing. I think it's mainly intended to be used for buying prints.

  5. Anyone know what the policy is on street handicap spaces? My street seems to have an over-abundance of them. I know for a fact that 2 of them are no longer needed (it was a house that was, might still be, for sale, I actually looked at it before buying this one, had 2 elderly women). It just seems like a waste to have a street lined with handicap spaces when they're no longer needed. How do they get added, and, more importantly, how long do they last?

  6. Using that rationale we should be handing out free television sets on every street corner. The bandwidth and airwaves are free capturing those air waves and listening or watching it has never been free.

Right, but there's never been a reason to have to upgrade your TV to change that if you have always used an antenna to watch TV. Imagine having to all of a sudden upgrade your AM/FM radio because they decide to switch to satellite. This is the equivalent of that.

I'm still of the opinion that there is absolutely no valid reason for this switch except to provide the content providers more control. I can understand not being able to buy a VCR anymore to watch your old VHS tapes. I can understand not being able to buy an analog cassette player because they're outdated and you can't make money on them anymore. You have to pay for cassette and VHS tapes. The airwaves are free. You just need a device to grab them. This is why this switch should never happen. If I have an old TV and it still works for me, why should I be forced to upgrade it if it's always worked and I've always been able to watch the 5 channels that broadcast free over the air? I've already paid to watch and listen. Now I'm being forced to pay again.

Cotuit's right on this one. If this switch is mandatory (which it is), anyone with a TV that won't work after Feb. 17 should get a free converter box.

  7. Right, so the answer is to keep delaying so people will never be forced to be ready...

Is TV a necessity or a luxury? I'm confused...

On a side note, Ireland is becoming the first developed country to ban incandescent lightbulbs. The US is following suit - by 2014 (when the rest of the world will probably be 100% LED) we will have 30% efficient incandescent lightbulbs. Go America!

Part of the reason is that the program that gave vouchers to people to get the converters has run out of money, leaving a lot of people blank. Personally, I don't see any reason for the change except so the content providers can better control their content. Remember the whole "plug the a-hole" thing (a=analog)?

  8. It is my niece's first urban experience for sure, although her roommate has lived all over Europe (army kid). I will mention the Elmhurst thing to them, although they both work in Mass. off 95, so elmhurst may be a bit inconvenient for them. In fact I was seriously considering elmhurst when I was first looking in Providence, but it just added too much to my commute versus being in the north end (right off exit 25). I really liked what I saw of elmhurst, though.
  9. I think that the law is they have to send a bill, and that they no longer have to send DUPLICATE bills. Which means if some other entity owns your house (mortgage company) or car (finance company) the bill probably goes to them, and now the city doesn't have to send YOU (the person who primarily pays the taxes) a bill. Providence is assbackwards as usual by not having that information on line for you just to log in and pay it.

I got a bill forwarded to me just last week, with the last bit of tax due from last year on my now totaled car. A day later, a collection notice followed. Now while i will concede that the bill forwarding adds, what? maybe an extra week, maybe two to get it to me all the way down here in Virginia. But a collection notice just a day later?

    Whatever.

  10. I have a question about Exise Taxes. (Not sure if this is the correct forum, so I apologize if it is).

Here's the rundown of what's happened to us:

    - We received no exise tax bills for 2006 and 2007.

    - In March of 2008, we received a bill with a late fee for the 2007 year.

    - I called and left messages at the collection office multiple times. No reply.

    - We paid the taxes for all of 2007, minus the late fee with a letter explaining that we never recieved a prior bill.

    - In August of 2008, we received a bill for 2008 Q1 taxes with an amount past due for 2007.

    - In August of 2008, we received a bill from a collection agency for 2006 taxes.

I am beside myself about this and want to get a lawyer, and send a letter to the mayor and governor expressing my outrage and how this makes me want to move out of the state.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any advice? Am I handcuffed?

I would really appreciate any input from the group here.

  11. That 146S view is very hard to capture (especially without anything else in the frame, like wires, trucks, buildings, etc). You'd need a 2 story high ladder to do it justice (anyone with one of those ladder trucks who wants to loan it to us for a day??).

There's an awesome view from North Providence (I'll need a mega zoom lens) that I want to shoot as soon as they are done with the BCBS building. The view is looking directly at the big three from up high and far away, with the rest of the city around it. It'll make an outstanding panorama.

Does anyone have access to the pink J&W dorms on Federal Hill? I bet the view from there is awesome.

i still want to get on top of some of the PC buildings. the view from up there is awesome as well. i'll have to try to get some more updated ones when I have time (unfortunately, I don't randomly walk around there anymore because i don't live near there at the moment).

where's the view from NP? i used to live on the corner of smith and high service where there's a street called city view (half was in NP, half was in prov).

  12. I don't have the day off, it is a floating holiday for me, moves to December.

we got 13 holidays, including victory day and the day before and after thanksgiving. but they usually give us another 2 with christmas eve and new year's eve. the wife works at brown and gets the days between christmas and new years (though i usually just use those as vacation days).

  13. Can we get rid of VaJayJay Day? I can't find anyplace to have lunch. Who has VaJayJay Day off anyway, state workers, union members, and lunch ladies?

    and college employees obviously. :)

the mall was mobbed this afternoon. i imagine it's more than just a few people with the day off. i like it. it gives me a long weekend in august, which is a nice break right before the semester starts.
