Maybe it's just a city ordinance like they do with D.C., not necessarily anything to do with planes. After all, Tyson's isn't that close to Dulles is it?
The distance is about 12 miles.

Week 1 looks to be alot of FUN as always! Nice games listed there TennBear
Also *Oklahoma State vs. Georgia; Tennessee at Cal; Oregon State vs. Utah; and Idaho at USC...NOT!
The season will start on a Thursday night (Aug.30th) LSU at Mississippi State
Richy, Thanks for the information on Dgreco's abreviations.
I had mentioned Tennessee vs California earlier. I didn't want to sound like a homer by mentioning it again. SEC East 2nd or 3rd vs PAC 10 1st or 2nd sounds like a good game to watch. I wasn't certain about Oklahoma State vs Georgia. I know that they are both in BCS Conferences, but I saw OSU as being 4th or 5th in the B12 South vs 1st or 2nd in the SEC East. I could be wrong and it could be a big, close game. Utah and the WAC are still not on my radar fully. 3rd Place WAC team vs 5th or 6th place Pac 10 team didn't draw me in. Idaho vs Southern Cal. I'll let your statement stand. I knew that LSU was opening it off on Thursday night vs Mississippi State, but 1st or 2nd in the SEC West vs 6th in the SEC West didn't set off any thoughts of a good game.
I was thinking about saving each week for the games that are most interesting in those weeks, but we can hit them early too.
-
I want to see the DI-FBS vs. FCS games, hoping some major upsets happen. That is the msot exciting part of the first few weeks for me.
dgreco, Not sure what those are. I was hoping that someone would answer and explain them.
I have some other games from the Opening week.
Colorado State - Colorado; these two hate each other and that always means a good game even if the teams are down that year.
Wake Forest - Boston College; See if last year was a figment of the imagination.
Georgia Tech - Notre Dame; GT should be improved. It was close last year and I'm not sure that ND will have improved.
Arizona - BYU; teams that want respect and have a chance to stand up for their leagues.
On Monday, Florida State - Clemson; the Daddy - Son Bowl. Son could be gone if he doesn't win.

Southwest does about 26 daily nonstop flights out of Birmingham to about 12 different cities. With the new flights to New Orleans (and the additional flights to Tampa and Dallas), it will be about 31 daily nonstop flights out of Birmingham to 13 different cities. If that doesn't make Birmingham a focus city, I would say we're pretty close.
I know Southwest does a big business out of Nashville as well. I wonder how many they do. Probably significantly more, but Southwest is by far the most important, largest air-carrier in Birmingham.
I would think that if Southwest increased the number of flights out of Birmingham that they would be able to draw a number of fliers from the Atlanta market. People who are looking not to have to deal with Atlanta's airport and by price point.

September 1, 2007 is coming up quickly. I am starting to get that little bit of excitement. Aside from the Tennessee - California Game on the 1st, what are the other big games that day?

Create your ultimate college football team! http://ultimateteam.rivals.com/UltimateFAQ.asp
Anyone else read the column on SI.com about LSU and USC? I think fans of those teams would love for those two to meet for the title in 08. I know I would!
I think that fans of any team would want to see their team in the Championship Game. I know that I would like to see my team in the Championship Game. I am not expecting it, but I would like to see it. I think that I would like to see my team Win the SEC East. If they do that, they stand a good chance of getting the SEC Championship and the National Championship. One step at a time.
I do agree that LSU vs USC looks like a good matchup and it may happen. That is why we play the games.

While I would still prefer to see the tunnel option built, it is simply time to get this project moving- one way or another. Rail lines to Dulles should have been planned and built 40 years ago. I wish it could be finished faster.

ACC: Boston College
Big East: West Virginia
Big 10: Michigan
Big 12: A&M
PAC 10: Oregon St. (I am 99% sure USC wins, but I would like to take a different team )
SEC: Florida
I know what your saying. I did the same thing with Rutgers because I really liked the way that they played all of last year, even though West Virginia is going to be on most peoples lists. I think that Virginia Tech stands a good chance, but I partly put them in over the shooting. I'm not thinking that Florida will be there, because I don't know that Tebow will be able to recognize everything that other teams will throw at him.
-
Who do we think wins each of the major conferences this year?
I'll give it a spin:
ACC: Virginia Tech
Big East: Rutgers
Big 10: Michigan
Big 12: Texas
Pac 10: USC
SEC: LSU

LSU's schedule is seriously "unbalanced" from year-to-year. They really need to fix it. Last year was next to impossible with "all" 4 away games against(at the time they played them) ranked #3Auburn; #5 Florida; #8 Tennessee; #5 Arkansas. As yall said, this year is very favorable as the schedule is REVERSED; those tough games are at home(replacing Tenn w/ So.Carolina-Spurrier).
I agree, but unless LSU can get another SEC team to flip the home years it is here to stay. I could be possible, after all Vandy was able to get Kentucky and Tennessee to flip game dates. In that case neither UK or UT had a problem and it didn't involve changing the years in which you had someone at home. Alabama might agree to flip with LSU and Vandy for home/away years because it would be fairly even LSU and Tennessee at home or LSU and Auburn. Auburn is another possibility, since they have a similar problem with home vs away years.

Here are Rival's 25 most difficult schedules.
Breakdown
SEC -----8
Pac 10 --5
Big 10 ---4
ACC -----3
Big 12----2
Big East -2

I am not completely convinced both LSU and USC will be there at the end, but its hard to go against them before some games have been played.
USC is certainly playing more hard games away than LSU, but the SEC does work on the teams and LSU will have to play in a Championship Game.
LSU only has 5 games away from Baton Rouge and one of those (Tulane) will be a Home Game in all but name. The only major games that LSU has away are Kentucky and Alabama. I would like to say that Ole Miss is because of the rivalry, but neither Ole Miss or Mississippi State have the players to give LSU much trouble. LSU is going to play 7 teams that should go to Bowl Games and has stretch of 4 games were they play Florida followed by Kentucky, Auburn, and Alabama.
USC has 6 away games with Nebraska and California as major away teams. Not certain what Notre Dame will look like against USC, but it does lead off the final 6 games in their schedule in which 4 are away and contains all of their tough games except for the Nebraska game. USC looks to be playing about the same number of Bowl Teams as LSU.
It is far easier to see LSU losing a game with their schedules than USC, but you can never see what can happen until the games have been played.

Is that why it is instantly rural on the Arkansas side?
Waccamatt, The Arkansas side is very flat and the levees are several miles back. Once in the spring of 73 prior to Mud Island being built up as a residential area and there was a downtown airport on it, the airport was flooded over and people in boats were fishing above the runway. The Arkansas side was totally flooded out and only the tops of trees, the rail lines, and highways showed above the water. Riverside Drive, which is about a third of the way up the Bluff had sand bags on it. That if the only time that I ever remember sandbags in the city at all. It often floods on the Arkansas side in the spring from the spring run off. It only rises slightly above the river on that side and there is nothing to hold back the river until the water hits the levies. Besides, I always thought it was neat that there was cotton growing right across the river and it is interesting that the city just rises out of no where. Drive across the river and come back on I-40. It is a neat view of the city.
Another place to visit that I don't know that anyone has mentioned is the Ornimental Metal Museum. There are several reasons. 1) the museum is interesting, 2) it allows you to see what the bluffs looked like prior to having them cut back to allow the wagons to go up and down to the river, 3) it lets you see the port which is in a dammed section of the river between the city and President's Island, and 4) there are Indian Mounds just outside of the entrance to the museum. Don't be thrown off by the brickwork. That was from when they were excavated.

Here's another one I did just for fun. I based it off just looking at maps i.e. I put zero research into this (so most of it probably doesn't make much sense )
SouthJersey,
A couple of points. It doesn't look crazy to me. If you have followed some of the information on this, there is a study for the Green line to go to BWI through Laurel. I thought that the idea of an extension to Bowie was an interesting one. I know that 50 is a mess. Maybe if it was cost effective, it could go to Annapolis
-
Here is a better map of the extension to Dulles.
-
Why does it have to be Metro, I wonder? Why not add another track to Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and run more MARC trains? (4 trains per hour all day, for example.)
I am not completely certain, but I think that since the lines are used by the rail lines for freight they have limitations for the number of passenger trains that can travel on the lines. They also wanted to make certain that they had a stop for the NSA and Ft Meade. I'm certain that they could do it if they created a commuter bus from the stations in Odenton and either Jessup or Dorsey to Ft Meade.
-
When was the last time you were there? I ask because they just reopened the final stages of a complete renovation of the entire mall and it's quite nice. While the metro stop there is deep, the escalator ride up isn't all that interesting, I think Bethesda and Dupont have much more impressive looking rides from the bottom. I think it's because they have more escalators and therefore the tunnel is wider and has more light where the Wheaton escalators are in a dark narrow tunnel. Just my opinion and yes I have put way too much thought into it!
Urbannomad, If it has improved that is great. I still would not go there. Call it a combination of bias based on the past and that it doesn't have anything that I couldn't find elsewhere. The only time that I go near Weaton Plaza these days is when I go to Kennsington. In answer, I haven't been there lately.
-
"The Columbia Flier" had an article on this in yesterday's paper. A major reason that the extension is being proposed is the 5,361 new personnel from the BRAC expansion of Fort Meade. State Senator John Giannetti has proposed a bill to spend $1M to do a feasibility study. The 20-mile extension would cost >$3B. The $3B cost would be roughly equal to the cost of the Inter-County Connector.
-
I received an e-mail to today from someone who lives in Laurel. He mentioned that the Laurel Leader Newspaper had an article about extending the Green Line to BWI with stations at Konterra/Muirkirk, Columbia, Dorsey, Odenton ...and a few others. Has anyone else heard any information on this? If this came about , it would be great news. People could commute to Fort Meade via Metro, could commute to DC from Columbia and tourists using BWI could take Metro into DC. No idea on the costs. I'm certain that it would be very expensive. I know that there are talks about extending service on Metro to Fort Belvoir, now that the BRAC has called for the movement of everyone and their brother to Fort Belvoir even though you cannot get in there now because of the lack of transportation alternatives. That's why they are Generals. That was set at $1B. Of course there is the extension to Dulles. I can't recall how much that is. And let's not forget that there is no programed funding for Metro.
-
i will for sure post all my experiences and pictures i take there. I am planning on writing an essay on the trip. just for fun and other reasons. thank you for all your help guys/gals!!!
We would like to see what you think is important and memorable. Question, What are your interests? If we know what your interests are, we can lead you in the right direction for sites.
-
OK. I thought the day pass was for unlimited rides anywhere on the metro. The way you described it sounded like i had to buy a one day pass, then pay a set ammount each time i board. how do the day passes work. i know in dallas, my home town, you buy a pass once and its good for unlimited travel all day long.
I'm sorry. I did not mean to confuse you. You are correct. A one day pass is for unlimited rides. I was meaning to say that you would then avoid....
