  1. The former Keiser Alumimum tower in Portsmouth can be scratched off the list - its' being dismantled.
  2. Ugh! Did not factor that in...good catch.
  3. This Wednesday at 3 seconds past 1:02 PM the date and time will be: 01:02:03 04/05/06 This will not happen again until 3006.
  4. Jack - United and Delta may offer the best bets. Both have decent schedules out of Green, so your wife should be able to rack up the miles better and offer her a more flexable schedule.
  5. The fingers that are broken are on his left hand - Garris's photo showed the left hand only. Someone also splashed white paint on the broken hand. Some people just have no respect...
  6. At Tiverton's Budget Committee last night we were reviewing the budget request for DPW and Landfill operations (Tiverton is the only community left in RI that has its' own landfill). We learned last night that 9,000 cubic yards of soil/fill that were taken from various Providence projects recently were used as landfill cover at the town dump. Providence comes to Tiverton...
  7. It's cool. You'll never forget your first Waterfire experience, and dining galore. Don't forget to check out the RISD museum. If you like theatre - try the Trinity Rep 6-pack subscription and see any 6 plays of your choice. My wife and I were subscribers until we headed to the 'burbs to have kids...
  8. Everyone - I was channel surfing on Sat. night and caught this show. They were highlighting Providence. A bit light on some details, but a fine show nonetheless. They talked about Trinity Rep, Waterfire, East Side homes, and a restaurant I never went to before - 10 Steak and Sushi if I remember the name right. They highlight spots throughout New England, so I bookmarked their schedule and will watch this show regularly. Check it out! http://www.newenglandlivingtv.com/showguid...asp#RhodeIsland I'll have to go to that restaurant. After watching the show and the head chef show off his 40-oz steak, well, that's just something I gotta try!
  9. I think so too. The Barton/Weeden St. area is real hardscrabble, so if the station goes there it should help out that immediate area.
  10. Here you go: http://www.networkri.org/. There are no "unemployment" offices per se. Now they're Network RI offices. The offices are run by the R.I. Dept of Labor and Training. The Pawtucket office downtown is the better of the branches; its' right across the street from Slater Mill.
  11. My dad's old mail route before he retired! There's a restaurant/pub on Benefit St. that is in an old fire station, and I remember frequenting a nightclub/bar at the corner of Armistice and Newport Ave, and a pub on Newport Ave near Slater Park. I know that Bally's on Newport Ave is a popular spot for the singles crowd in that area. My wife's from that area, we would go to those places frequently... (when I was courting her, of course!)
  12. It's not online - I searched all over the site. That's too bad because the list was very comprehensive. Someone may have to scan and post...?
  13. Welcome! ANy questions about greater PVD, just ask!
  14. We love that park! We used to take our kids to the playground there. Great place - is that ice cream shop still over on Hope St.?
  15. I think Roger Williams Park is your best bet. I believe there are tennis courts just after the entrance to the park on Broad Street, just as you enter the park. From the main gate they would be after the zoo. Also, I think Cranston has courts on Park ave, just outside the south gate from Roger Williams Zoo. Slater Park has courts as well, and they are pretty good. My wife was played in the Pawtucket leauge there for years...
  16. Here is the facade of the aforementioned mill building in Richmond Square: The moon rises over the "Gatehouse" restaurant in Wayland's Square Richmond Square building complex: I remember there used to be a great little Mexican place down on Richmond Square - good burritos. Wonder if it still there...
  17. Garris - Excellent photos as always. You really bring deserved admiration to the city. If you are looking to do panoramic shots OF RI (not in RI), you should really check out Fort Barton in Tiverton: http://newportvisions.com/home/barton1.html Check out that website - you can climb up the tower you see there, and from up top, on a clear day, you can see Kent County, the Mount Hope Bridge, portions of Narragansett Bay, even the tops of the buildings in the Financial district. Spectacular sunset views - the best around, and a photographer's dream!
  18. I thnk the reason Manchester is expanding faster is that their airport has a longer takeoff runway than Green's. Longer runways are crucial to an airport striving to expand; adding more destinations mean longer flights; longer flights mean requiring planes to carry more fuel, which increases the plane's weight on takeoff so a longer runway is needed. Bruce Sundlun has been championing the need to increase T.F. Green's runways for years now. Of course, adding more destinations from an airport means more planes taking off, which means more airport noise. Warwick residents know this all too well!
  19. Finally something is being done! Now I don't have to drive all the way to Central Falls to visit my mother-in-law. We can take the train!
  20. Hi Everyone - I'm a new member to UrbanPlanet, and have really enjoyed reading through all the posts. I don't live in Providence - I live in Tiverton, but I and my wife went to college in Providence (RIC) and I worked in the city for 4 years prior to my new job in Newport. We like the city, and enjoy it with the kids when we can. I would have introduced myself earlier, but I still don't have a decent avatar!!!! I'll join in the topics from time to time. I think once the GTECH building, the new Marriott hotel, the new condos at Waterplace, OTW, and Westin2 are completed, Providence will take another step forward in being one of the premier urban areas in the US. If only "The bridge on Viagara" could be dismantled, the drive in from I-195 West would provide a better view of the city driving in! Mike
  21. Hi again - Newman, dromulus, thedude26, & DaGABoyStinger, thanks for your posts. I will check out Evans, Summerville and other places you mentioned. One question - how long would the commute be from Evans to Ft. Gordon? I see on the map that Ft. Gordon is directly west of Augusta, and Evans is further north. My commute now to work is 25 minutes in the offseason, and 35 in the summer months (Newport, RI is one of the biggest summer tourist draws in New England). Knowing the commute would also help factor in on what I should decide. Thanks! Mike
  22. Hi everyone- I just stumbled here to this forum. I've been offered a civilian position based at Ft. Gordon and I'm flying down there on the 25th of Sept. I'll be shown around the area, etc. I live in Rhode Island now (I work in Newport). I'm not sure if I will accept the positon yet. I'm trying to get honest opinions of the area; which area (Augusta, Evans, etc) has the better schools (I have 2 kids), low crime rate? My wife and I enjoy arts & culture, and enjoy taking the kids out on the weekends. Any information would be helpful. If I take the position, I want to make the uprooting of my family as painless as possible and ensure I can tend to my family in a safe and healthly environment. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look during my visit? Thanks for helping me out! Mike
