I was beginning to the think the Peabody would NEVER expand. I'm glad to see some progress already. There are now quite a few candidates for Orlando's tallest. In a few years, Orlando will have several skylines.

Please continue your photgraphy chat in pvt or in the Coffee House Section.
Thank you! It was getting rediculous! Even after a couple of requests to stop, it still continued.

^ Same here. I mean, I always suspected that the morons who ran this town back in the day slept at the wheel, literally, when it came to free bypass funds. This article just confirmed my suspicions.

Orlando Sentinel - Orlando Beltway
article in today's Sentinel regarding the subject of recent discussion.
-
^ You most likely saw the urbanized north end of Idrive from Kirkman (Universal/Wet n Wild area) south to the convention center. I was referring to the extreme south end, past Sea World. That area is poised for more high rise hotels and timeshare resorts.
-
^ another problem w/this city is no Inter-Regional hindsight on these projects. for example from the article: "It's going to be the city's facilities, but we're writing a big check," county Commissioner Bill Segal said. What kind of narrow minded thinking is that??? Doesn't this moron realize that the City residents are also County residents? And exactly WHOSE check does he think he's writing? I'm sick of the Arena/Citrus bowl debate...just implode the two and build an all inclusive massive concrete structure that can accomitdate football, baseball, basketball, and the friggin' ballet all in one night! I'm sure the greedy hoteliers on IDrive can persuade their bedroom buddy Crotty to cough up some unincorporated County land to construct it on...right next to his palace, the Orange County Convention Center!

-
^ Hmm...Kind of makes me wish that Orange County would have stalled the process too.
-
^ My thoughts exactly. According to news in the Jax forum, he's embedded in some BIG projects up there. Maybe that's what the article will be about; but hopefully, he has another BIG Orlando project. Also, in the Jax TimesUnion, Kuhn was quoted as saying "Jacksonville is everything Orlando wants to be..." hmm...indeed.

^ IMO, I don't see a new entertainment zone on the west side as there is still plenty of unused land in the I-Drive/192 area on the south side of town.
I think more residential/commercial development will follow on the west side once this highway is finished. It's a trend that started on the east side of Orlando back in the 90's with the completion of the 417/Greenway. Back then, when I was going to UCF, there were miles of trees & pasture land. Now it's morphed into a relative CITY. That trend will continue on the westside in Ocoee, Winter Garden, Clermont, etc. A "town centre" is being planned in Winter Garden in what is now farmland and an upscale mall is being planned in Clermont, also on what is now farmland.

Also, any more infomation on the 429 and western disney access road?
The southern route from the Turnpike to US Hwy 192 in Osceola County is under construction and should be finished by early 2006. The final leg connecting it to I4 in Osceola is being built by the Turnpike Enterprise and should be finished by late 2006. Disney is privately building a western access road from the 429, but I don't know exactly where on Disney property it will be. I'm assuming an extension from the Animal Kingdom access road, but I could be wrong.
The ultimate and final leg of 429 from US Hwy 441 in Apopka to I-4 in Sanford is still going thru land acquisitions (after a lot of local opposition) and I have not heard a timetable on when construction should begin. I did hear that the first segment going west from I4 in Sanford to SR 46 near Mt. Plymouth will be a freeway into Lake county then turn into a tollroad entering Orange county down to meet the existing 429 in Apopka.

^ Yes, for once...the local politicos in Central Florida actually worked together for the common good of the local populace.
On a side note...does anyone have the blueprint for the recent I-4 expansion announcement? I heard the toll lanes were still going to be added, even though Mica banned them.
-
^ Way to look at the OPTIMISTIC side of things!
-
^ LOL. I agree that w/the current legislature in control and Jeb behind the wheel, Fla HSR is already derailed and laying on the side of the CSX tracks allowing slow-moving, traffic halting, heart of the city clogging freight trains to pass by. Personally, I never agreed w/the proposed first leg anyway. Honestly, going from the Orlando Int'l Airport to downtown Tampa really wouldn't benefit any locals at all. I understand that getting tourists off of our roads is a concern to locals, but the train really wouldn't benefit the tourists who DRIVE here...I am way off base here?
As for voting on the issue...why vote? Certainly, our voices are heard, but are they actually LISTENED to??? Oops! I forgot...I need a feeding tube to be heard by this State's electorate...but that's another thread.

Disney Road Paves Way to Skip I-4, Enter Park
Walt Disney World is quietly building a new road onto its property that could siphon thousands of tourists a day off Interstate 4.
The route would take visitors driving down the Interstate 75/Florida's Turnpike corridor into Disney from State Road 429, the Western Beltway toll road being built through western Orange County...
-
^ Agreed. Ripley's will focus on where the tourists are and that's I-Drive. IMO, it would require a lot of incentive money from Orlando for Ripley's to build the aquarium downtown.

Orange weighs train deal as funding deadline looms
Orange County commissioners might seek more public input before considering a deal for a Central Florida commuter train, but state officials say a delay now could put at risk hundreds of millions of dollars in state and federal money -- and the train itself...
-
I'd have to say,.....
1. Winston Salem- High Point- Greensboro
2. Birmingham
3. Columbia, SC
I would say Orlando too, although the city's core has grown by leaps and bounds, I just feel with in the last 30 or so years it has been recognized as a well established city because everyone 200 miles outside of Orange County thinks Disney is in Orlando proper.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have to agree with your last comment. In the past, Disney was the only thing to bring any National/Internation exposure to Orlando. Yes, Orlando is considered by many outside of Florida to already be a major city, but I think it's becoming a rising star only very recently.
With the arrival of higher end hotels, upscale shopping districts, more culture, and higher wage jobs; not to mention Orlando Int'l Airport reaching the status of the largest (by passenger arrival) in the State, I think Orlando is now finally to achieve a more "grown up" image. I'm glad to say the CITIZENS of Orlando are making this happen...not the tourists (but their MONEY helps!)

Rep. John Mica kills planned I-4 toll lanes bill
State must find another way to fix clogged freeway[
The sounds of singing and rejoicing are heard throughout Central Florida!!! 3 Cheers for JOHN MICA!

Although I'll refrain from obscure approximations regarding Tampa's metro/city population (and I'll leave out all the exclamation points too), that city is definitely up and coming in Florida. It's working on plans to build up it's downtown with more infill projects and it's also collaborating a regional effort to improve transportation.
Another Florida city that comes to mind is Orlando. Yes, we all know it's well established tourism sector. However, the city is making great strides in the high tech & manufacturing industries. It too is also involved in regional efforts to improve transporation through commuter/light rail efforts and infill development projects.
Outside of Florida, I'd have to wager Austin, TX with it's young population and impressive job growth, Charleston, SC, and Raliegh, NC.

^ Well said! I DID point out last week my concern for Crotty killing this proposal...one encouraging thing to note in the article, Crotty & Co are merely concerned about the specifics. They're not TOTALLY ready to kill this deal. However, you're right how they always cave in to I-Drive/Convention Center interests. $44M seems a little paltry compared to the hundreds of millions in taxpayer money those idiots paid for that behemoth of a concrete cavern on I-Drive.
I didn't vote for Crotty in the last election and I will certainly not vote for him next time. As for my county commissioner, he's already received my email ranting about this!
