Charlotte ranked #16th in the nation in creating private sector jobs since the Great Recession. Raleigh even bet that but it is great NC has 2 metros on this list. https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2017/09/01/raleigh-area-added-100-000-private-sector-jobs.html?ana=e_ae_set1&s=article_du&ed=2017-09-01&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1504294468&j=78773941

My petty monster says "NO.... CRUSH RALEIGH", but yeah, good for them or whatever.

Eh, we all have skeletons.....I know I could never run for office.....no financial or legal issues.....but I've had some pretty regrettable internet posts.  "grodney, a candidate for mayor, in 2008 photoshopped a naked wiener onto a Mr. Bean's Holiday movie poster.  Reached for comment, he said "Hop Drop is 7.2%, what can I say?"."

I have already rehearsed my answers for when I run for office:

"Heck yeah, I did it. $hit was fun, too. Next question."

It is likely just a matter of time until we have a mayor like the former mayor Barry, of Washington, D.C. or the moron Mayor Nevin of New Orleans (Katrina).

Lack of character runs all the way up the ladder, these days.

    "Grab 'em by the ......"

The entire government needs an intervention.

I see some primer up. Will be interesting to see if they paint this beige and earth tones, or white. Personally I was hoping for glossy white, was disappointed to see updated renderings with the usual crap.

The longer I stare at that yellow, the more I wish to was yellow.

I guess I'm just saucy like that.

I went to Greenville, SC for the first time to see the eclipse. It was great, but possibly even better was seeing how totally awesome Greenville's downtown is. I found it very walkable with many mixed use spaces, art galleries, restaurants, boutiques. Falls Park was especially cool. I left the town feeling quite envious...

I came here to say the same thing. I decided to go to Downtown Greenville after three eclipse to see what all the buzz was about.

That place is incredibly charming. I had to sit down for a minute and pray about my envy issues. I left after glancing at the water because I decided that I'm going to go back and have a nice little mini-vacation for some real exploring.

I'm still a little mad about it.....

I don't get the negative reactions to historicism. Everything else Charlotte is doing is modern. Why not throw in a little blast from the past ?

Uh-oh, does that mean I have to like BOAT ?

I don't get it either - especially from a group who frequently laments the destruction of our history. While it may not be "authentic" there is no harm in adding back pieces of what we took away.

A nice mix of modern, classical, etc. is preferable in my opinion. This is not Dubai. We have a history,  we have roots, and it's OK to go back and find them.

This might be a stupid question from a devoted urbanist, but where the hell does everyone park for Montford businesses?

Some of those businesses have their own parking. Otherwise, up and down the street or at the parking lot belonging to that big shopping center (sorry, the name isn't coming to me).

Can someone snag me a picture of 1225 S. Church with its facade being replaced? Or perhaps Mosaic. Need it for an article I'm writing.

Great article! I hope the message eventually sinks in.... I'm assuming that was you. It had the tone of a UPer.

It got a shot because a previous smaller, local shop outgrew the space.  Curious as to your reasoning for rent subsidies in center city.

Just as I said, I would like to see more local shops in the area. The staggering rents are a bit much for newer, smaller operations. It would be great to give local businesses a shot for a year or two. It would make for a more interesting uptown & perhaps even add a tiny boost in tourism.

That Jimmy John's by Romare Bearden park could be selling someone's amazing family recipes unique to Charlotte. A trendy art gallery/studio would make a great place to stop while walking back from the delicious yet generic Panera. In my opinion, an increase in local flavor would mitigate some of the sterility from lack of historical businesses & architecture. As long as the businesses can maintain some sort of predetermined success rate, I see it as a win for everybody.

Good to know. I saw this the other day & had no idea what I was looking at. Glad to see a smaller, local shop get the opportunity to open uptown. I would like to see more local businesses be given rent breaks for at least a set time. That is the flavor that our center city is missing.

After looking over this historical aerial imagery, I'm amazed at how many buildings/neighborhoods Charlotte lost during the '60s-'70s. There is a slider tool that allows you to compare two years (i.e. 1965 vs 1978), which is a period where the city went crazy in demolishing so many homes and buildings around the CBD.

We still have the same attitude. Buildings don't just automatically become old and beautiful or full of character. First they have to be 30 or 40 years old and awkwardly out of style for a while. We need to learn how to leave things alone for a while or just give a little face lift.

I know I'm in the minority, though. For example, I think Memorial Stadium is beautiful. All that stone! But I realize it's inconvenient to progress (which I'm all about - just not the extreme cost we pay here).

Looks like they have signed a tenant for the corner spot, Yume Bistro, to bring another Asian restaurant to South End. A ramen place with some other small plates their spot in Matthews has some great reviews. South End is really turning into the mecca of Asian or Asian inspired restaurants as we have Futo Buta, a couple of Sushi place in O-ku, Yamazura, Nikkos, Thai Taste (technically Dilworth), Rai Lay, Wu's (had to get creative with Cajun Asian), Seoul Food Meat Co (Asian inspired instead of traditional), and the announced but not yet open Korean fast casual place on Camden next to Blaze Pizza. While they all are a little unique it does seems like some over saturation.

That honor still goes to Central Avenue.

Japanese/Thai/Korean are all different styles of cuisines from completely different countries. Two or three of each can't hurt.

5,000 pizza restaurants is over saturation, but that is still very welcome in my book.

Heard. But will it have the main entrance on the sidewalk forming a wall of building, or will it have a big parking lot between the entrance and the street? To me that matters more than any use.

I have no idea as the whole thing is just conceptual at this point, but given the parking disaster they created in Whitehall (which many people have publicly vented about), they may be a little more cognizant of what they're doing this time around.

I'm surprised a "big box" style business like that is a thing right now. It would be another nail in the U City coffin if they end up there.

I think TopGolf is perfect for that area. If that entertainment district is done right, the proposed businesses along with TopGolf (which has been a HUGE draw in southwest Charlotte) will be remarkable for the area. All those families, people who want to socialize but find bars unacceptable,  and underage college students need something to do. While it may not be hip or exciting to the rest of us, I'm hoping this happens & I expect it to really wake that area up.

  14. Yeah you are right about the CMPD, it's not really always on them. I think this is just the case of some dumb___ kids that need to just be sent away. No rehabilitating fools like this. I still feel safe in CLT, just not a good look in the media right now (although this isn't even making like page 10 notional news).

The link isn't working... What kind of kids?

  15. This is a shot of M Street on the 7th St. side today. The brick has been added. It's a brown color. Not sure what is going on with the paint scheme. Renderings indicate a lot of red or brick, however this shot suggests a mult-color scheme. Or maybe they're re-thinking the red.

The wife says I have to take a photography course befoe I can buy a new camera. So for now UP will need to suffer through my 3.2 megapixel.

Wow. I hardly ever have an opinion about anything but this is just not attractive to me at all. :(

It reminds me of something that needs to be at the beach.

  16. Yeah, the back kind of seems like a missed opportunity. If they had only made those tiny windows a little bit bigger...

What is that supposed to be with the no windows there? Are those cond's with no windows back there or something?

  17. Me too.

Speaking of zany weathermen and the sensitive topic of rape, there was once a poplular zany weatherman by the name of Tex Antoine at WABC Channel 7 in New York, who was also known as Uncle Weatherbee.  I recall this had to be around 1976 - after a story about a rape in NYC, he made the comment "Well, I always say when rape is inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.  Now the weather...".  I think he was probably fired at the next commercial break and, not surprisingly, never surfaced again.

    Oh my word!!! :o

I have had to give up on the news. I was getting a little paranoid and feeling rather defeated for a whole there. On the other hand, when I was downtown the week before the 4th traffic was HORRIBLE at 1 in the morning and while we sat in traffic waiting we saw this very large group of guys just run up and beat the ever lovin' snot out of this one dude standing there by himself.

Granted his motions seemed to welcome the attack, but come on. That was so scary to see. On our way out of downtown that same guy that got his butt whooped was still standing there all bloody but acting like nothing happened. It was really bizarre.

Oh...did anyone see (dont remember what channel it was) where the lady was about to report on the trouble the black teens were causing when this young, drunk white guy ran up on the camera and said "Y'all need to get the **** out of here"? That plus the look on her face was priceless.
