They announced the new golf simulator bar that is going in the old Davenport building on Ottawa:

between gold simulators and pickleball pubs, we’re going to have our fill of sports & beer places. They’re popping up everywhere. Is this the new FroYo craze (one on every corner)? 🤣

Don't forget the bocce place ;)

Is it just me, or did the city move to a new meeting portal that doesn't show Agenda's and Packets for upcoming meetings? This used to be a great source for keeping up on upcoming projects, but ever since they switched (mid December(?)), I can't get the site to work. Just dumb? Do I need to look elsewhere? Anyone else having this issue?

I've still been using this link and it has been working for me: Meeting Calendar - Grand Rapids, Michigan (iqm2.com)

but on your link, if I click on the three vertical dots (idk what that is called) on the right side of the meeting, i can still access the packets as well.

  3. Drove past Fat Boy today and was surprised to see a for sale sign on the building.

I know there place is a bit of an institution but I  think the owners have kind of checked out in recent years. Spot has so much potential.

To me, I like the concept in theory, but the language the guy is using sounds more like he is still in the brainstorming phase and hasn't fleshed out many details. It'll be interesting to hear what HPC has to say, and if this thing moves forward at all.

When I look at the rendering, I don't understand why the shipping containers to be located where they are. It looks like if they were moved to the other side, then food trucks could drive along the right side of the structure and that would eliminate weird concept of designing the building so that food trucks can drive through it.

Interesting quote in Crains. MiEN (who bought the Baker Furniture building on Monroe and are starting a phased move in March) also bought the American Seating campus.

    This quote is interesting:

The firm listed that part of the property (south end of the Baker building) for $10.9 million in late 2022 but has not yet received an offer from a housing developer that aligned with its vision for the site, Bergsma said. He said he is not ruling out developing it himself, but first he wants assurances that the city of Grand Rapids will move forward with its GR Forward and River for All plans to develop the surrounding north riverfront into trails and more mixed-use residential.

I read that article too but couldn't decide to discuss it (Creston, Monroe North, West Side...)

I would love to see housing on that site, but I also kind of like that they are holding the city's feet to the fire on this. When we talk about riverfront redevelopment it always seems to come with a veil of mystery (at least to me). I would love to see more concrete plans and timelines put out there.

  6. I drove down plainfield just now and almost every block i noticed something changing or recently changed:

    - Arcane Pizza has their sign up, which looks nice

    - The Lofts on Grove apartments were getting appliances delivered (there were like 20 washing machines unloaded on the curb). This must be a sign that they are close to completion...

    - The crane at The Current was active and moving

    - Looks like they started working on the roof of the new wine/flower shop

    - There were some work trucks at 2130 Plainfield, which is another sign of life for that potential restaurant that has been talked about for some time. They had the bay door open and one of the trucks was backed into the building...

    - "Three Blue Brushes" art studio is opened next to Nourish Kitchen in Cheshire Village. I hadn't heard of this place before but it looks like they offer classes: About Us — Three Blue Brushes

This, along with a hillside park would be amazing for near downtown, and the residents of both Belknap and Monroe North. Ottawa and Division running parallel makes no sense.

Hell, if done right this would be good for Creston too. Connecting the three areas with more walkable/bikeable infrastructure. I would love to see the intersection of plainfield and leonard to become more pedestrian friendly.

This looks like a big enough deal to break this area off into its own thread. Changing the zoning of this whole area could be huge. It’s a little odd squeezed between the river and 131, but had lots of possibilities. Sounds like nothing will be moved forward in this area (including the proposed development on Front and Leonard) until the zoning change is approved and complete.

I was wondering what the deal was with that proposed 10-story building at Leonard.

There was also that apartment building proposed right next to the hotel just south of Ann Street. I don't know if that one is still in the works or not...

    Ok, I'm PUMPED for this.

Same. These kinds of places are a no brainer for GR. We have a young, active population itching for things to do, but a good portion of the year we have pretty crappy weather. Between the duckpin bowling, the bocce place, and now this, we will have some fun alternatives to traditional bars during the winter.

Hey everyone. I guess there is a hearing tonight about developments and some NIMBYS about this project are trying to gain traction and potentially derail this project.

I don't think it's in serious danger, but if you can go and want to voice your opinion on the project, go for it!

If this was so important to them, why wait to get involved now? it's been public knowledge for about 2 years. This train has left the station, folks.

  11. There is finally something going into the old old mattress store at the corner of Ann and Plainfield...I'm a little unsure about the business model:

    Quote

a combination business that will have a yoga movement studio, a retail store and some private office room rentals for massage and therapy. Focus is on community growth and support.

I looked up their social media and they had a go-fund-me page setup to raise funds for the initial costs....maybe it will work out but i'm just not sure that there is demand for this kind of thing.
