That is a pretty sexy building, I like how there are so many windows since the view should be pretty nice from there. any update on timeline?
edit: I just looked on google earth and the brick matches the Sun Title building next door which is nice.

There is a new sheltered transit stop installed in front of the Lofts on Grove apartments. Nice to see.

They opened a Freddy's at the airport. A delicious new option.

I think it is great that we are getting more options and I'm sure people (especially families) will utilize it. It took me a while to realize that I don't enjoy eating heavy foods before a flight...I don't feel great after and the passengers in the seats next to me also won't appreciate it. I love Freddy's but it's something I eat in the privacy of my own home when nobody is there to see me cramming fries into my mouth between bites of my burger. I had a good salad at the Aletitude spot in the new terminal recently.
It is hard to say how far out that new space will extend based on that rendering, but it looks something like this:

the only parts of my conversation that still make me go “hmmmmm” were:1) looking at a much larger stadium than originally planned
2) they were doing studies about tv feasibility
3) MLS major concerns was parking/market size and that they would want to build a massive ramp near the YMCA.
maybe that stuff would be requirements for this new league?
I’m trying to imagine the meltdown in some of those west side neighborhood facebook groups if they came back and announced that it would actually be twice the size of the initial proposal

So, some insider info…. One of my clients is working on this project….. they work for the MLS. They are apparently still exploring the team being in the MLS…
I’m having a hard time believing it would happen, but I would be very excited if it did!

Considering the money they have backing this place, if there was ever a spot in Grand Rapids to try a bit of an "out there" concept, this would be it. I'm not saying it has to be crazy, but an interesting tasting menu, or just look to the trends in Chicago, NY, San Francisco, and try something we've never had in GR before. And it better not be a Tapas place...
I really want GR to get a high-end sushi spot like the ones that you see in bigger cities. It isn't anything "out there", but it's something that we don't currently have.

The "inclusive co-working community space and studio" at Ann an Plainfield is not going to happen. I had my doubts when I saw that they were trying to use a Gofundme to start the business, but they just made a long post on Facebook stating that they would not be opening in that location.
QuoteThis is a hard post to make. Please bear with me. It may get lengthy. This last week I made the big and hard decision to shut down the current location of #whiteravenstudio. From the beginning it seemed I was cursed. My partner asked for a separation a week after I signed the lease. But quickly found out after I signed my lease that the building did not have an occupancy permit. That the building permit had been sitting from the owner on his old building plans and he still had 3 codes compliance's he had to take care. But instead he left the building sit for years to continue to rot away more. I come in and we have to update all the plans since his old plans were not completed. So now it has been in the city's planning since beginning of December. It is stuck on parking. There is not enough parking for the updated occupancy load. But there is a city amendment being voted on 4/9.Along with so many other issues like black mold and asbestos. No boiler inspection anytime in this decade, maintenance problems galore. He also likes to gaslight me, often. I am apparently as of my last email sitting around not doing enough. So at the end of that email he gave me 3 options.- be more proactive.- pay rent in an unoccupiable building (which he has already received $8K in rent and $3500 in a security deposit)- or cancel the lease. So I am going to take his third and cancel the lease per his request. I do not foresee him being any better as we get to an open status. I am out almost 2/3 rds my income for the last 7 months, been sick multiple times from the mold and asbestos while working on the space, and am now paying on a business loan with nothing to show beside half a remodeled building I'm walking away from. Will be out by Friday.I had such huge hopes and love for this space and community in #crestonneighborhood.#whiteravengr is not be going away for good just resetting the business plan and looking for a new location. We will be a smaller foot print then the original plan. But still focusing on #community and #coworking, #cocreating. See you on the flip side and next update. It's a prime spot for Creston...I would love to see it put to good use.

Was this guy named Lucas Leverett? He's on the board for West Grand and frankly a lot of his comments are very.....umm....excessive at times, we'll say, in my opinion.
That guy is the worst. Once in a while I will agree with one of his points but he is so insufferable that I can’t admit it out loud.

GRBC is officially closed, permanently.
I hope this means something really great will go into that spot. I've lived here for over 5 years and I've haven't once heard anyone mention their food or beer other than the fact they have been around forever. It's a fantastic location...

Drove past this place and they have taken down the plywood and you see the new windows/overhead door. It is looking pretty nice, looks like they still have some cosmetic work like exterior paint to get it all cleaned up but the masonry looks to be repaired.

Grand Action will lead the development of, and may partner with one or more private developers, on an additional development south of the Acrisure Amphitheater, which is expected to include a mixed-use project with up to 475 residential apartments in a 21- story building, a 917 space, six-floor parking ramp to be shared by the amphitheater and apartments, and ground floor retail/commercial space. The estimated investment in this portion of the project is $271 million, and will result in two new jobs associated with the management of the apartments.Parking structure timeline: Starts Summer 2024 with Completion in Spring 2026 (same time as the Amphitheater)
"Amphitheater Apartments" timeline: Starts Summer 2025 with Completion in Fall 2027.
But wait, there's more. Head over to the Soccer Stadium thread. And bring on the renderings!
Joe
I like these details too:
"A publicly owned and maintained pedestrian and non-motorized trail will be constructed along the Grand River from US-131 south to the railroad tracks, and will include additional connections from the river to Market Avenue through the amphitheater property. The trail will be funded primarily through the Greenway Grant administered by the DDA. Other connections are planned separate from this project, that would connect north and south, linking multiple trail systems and connecting more than 100 miles of non-motorized trails."- 6

And here's the story.
"Talbot is still in the “design and gathering feedback stage,” but plans a 117,000-square-foot, five-story building with 150 apartments, a small ground floor retail space, fitness center, a roof deck for residents, and onsite parking. He hopes to start the $31 million project by the end of this year with a completion date in summer 2026, according to a presentation today to nearby business owners. "
I hope this pans out - I'm glad Talbot has shown some real interest in working in GR!

GRR was recognized among the best airports in North America in a new survey.
QuoteIn order to most accurately rank the world's best airports, the Airports Council International (ACI)—in conjunction with travel tech company Amadeus—conducted passenger surveys throughout the year to collect feedback. Around the globe, nearly 600,000 surveys were completed in 2023 before announcing the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards earlier this week.
GRR was recognized for the following categories:
- Best Airport - 2 to 5 million passengers per year
- Airport with most dedicated staff
- Most enjoyable airport
- Cleanest airport

This was the site of the very old Catholic St. John's Orphanage. It was torn down in 1960. The nondescript building next to it that looked sort of like a prison back when it had a chain link fence partly enclosing it, was built as its replacement. Slide down a page in this link for photos and the story of the orphanage:
Thanks for sharing - I love stuff like that! The orphanage building was really beautiful

I am just so happy that it's planned for a central location instead of just plopped out on the outskirts of town. The location will create a gameday atmosphere that will only add to the attraction - supporters congregating at bars on Bridge St or downtown and heading over for the game.

reupping on this comment since the recent renderings show same metal cladding trend... folks who were hoping for brick & ivy / old fashioned ballpark cues. It's definitely not that!
I don't hate it, but I don't love it.
I'm in the camp that was hoping it would have the brick and ivy appearance. I was really hoping they were going to try to tie that into the appearance of the old furniture factory buildings in GR.

They announced the new golf simulator bar that is going in the old Davenport building on Ottawa:
between gold simulators and pickleball pubs, we’re going to have our fill of sports & beer places. They’re popping up everywhere. Is this the new FroYo craze (one on every corner)?
Don't forget the bocce place
