Great information! Thanks for providing some clarity on this. Also a bit surprised that Avelo chose PHF over RIC - although doesn't Avelo SPECIFICALLY target smaller airports with significantly less traffic? RIC is the third-busiest airport in the Commonwealth, behind only the two D.C. airports.

So based on your professional experiences, what do you think it would take for RIC to land a focus-city/flight-ops center for an airline the way ORF did Breeze? What constitutes the "LOT more" that goes into it? RVA is not the touristy area that Norfolk and Virginia Beach are. It's not a gateway to the Outer Banks. But it IS a potent business/corporate center, still something of a financial center (though she lost most of that punch to North Carolina decades ago), a university city. She is the center of state government, a potent (and fast-growing) manufacturing center, and is an up-and-coming center for scientific and medical research, among many other things. So what (aside from tourism and perhaps the heavy military presence and a difference in market size) swayed Breeze to base flight ops out of ORF and not RIC if the RVA market is considered such a good market for Breeze? And -- to my original question - what does she need to convince an airline to set up shop here?

These are some great questions, I'll answer them in order.

Avelo does target smaller airports, that is correct. However, they do base their hubs in larger cities such are Orlando and Raleigh.  As for Richmond I can see a few reasons why new airlines are swaying away from creating a hub / focus city there.

    1. Lots of competition , off the top of my head I can think of Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, Jet Blue and others. All these airlines are quick to compete. They can sell tickets at lower prices and out sell a new airline like breeze, which makes creating a hub there risky. When Breeze launched out of ORF there wasn't much to compete with. No one was flying or wanted to fly the routes they picked.

    2. Landing costs, Fuel costs, Usage costs, etc. I don't doubt breeze was in talks with Richmond before Norfolk. But it really could have came down to Norfolk offering a better overall deal to operate there than Virginia Beach. I did some work for an Airport in Twin Falls, Idaho when the city is paying Sky West any of the extra costs if their planes don't sell tickets. Just to keep the traffic there.   Stuff like that happens. ORF just got a new CEO and he is killing it.

Overall, I think like Downtower said, it's in an unfortunate spot. An airline will be quick to look at RDU or DC. You're in the middle. Look at PHF, the middle guy always gets cut out. That's not to say you won't. I really do think Breeze will give you an international route in time, maybe even before ORF. We don't have the security capability right now.

  2. Finally. Hopefully we can pull Air Canada and start with direct flights there. I’d like to see some more information on C, but i’m willing to bet they want to modernize A and B first. Ive never even thought about an Airport hotel that’s going to be nice. The crew of the flights who stay over night will be happy!

Proposed redevelopment of Kemps River Shopping Center to be heard by the Planning Commission this month. This site plan was posted on Nextdoor but renderings and more details will come out with the meeting package next week. I would expect your typical suburban apartment design.

I just did some research on this. Looks like there is a petition to not have it go through.

Had to look that up. Honestly not familiar with the area. Confused as to why that's such a popular destination. What's the main attraction there, or do people go there because it's cheaper than flying in to Manhattan?

I would guess. You can take the train straight into the city. When I worked for then most people lived on long island and didn’t want to drive into the city to catch a flight.

  5. Missed this one with Breeze:

    • Islip (ISP) to Norfolk (ORF) increases from 2x to 5x weekly effective May 19

A big jump, must be popular.

This news combined with Spirit coming to the airport next year… we’re running out of room!

My “Wild A$$ Guess” is that when all is said & done for 2022, ORF comes in at just over 4.2 million.  Anyone else care to guess? ;-)

I think 4.2 million might be right on the money. The real numbers will be in 2023 after Breeze and Spirit fully launch their new services. Thinking we can surpass 4.5 million easy.  Looks like there is active construction at ORF on concourse B, anyone have any idea what it is for?

  7. The master plan update calls for complete demo of the existing concourses and have them rebuilt alongside the new one. The new three will all be connected via a central security with access to all three terminals. I bet there will be a lot of options in the coming years. Airport will probably be unrecognizable in 15 years.

  8. Yep, you all would be correct. Definitely a management issue. David Neilman definitely went to hard and to fast this time around. Hopefully they can save themselves down the road. Sucks they made their image look so terrible. That’s a big reason why I left the company. Among other things.

ORF and Breeze have a bright future if they can get their act together.

  9. Bad Breeze news. Like I predicted a few months ago the A220 has been a monumental failure. Breeze tried to launch it way to soon and the entire company has paid for it.

ORF-LAX has been canceled until February 2023. It was supposed to launch next week.

ORF -HPN (White Plans NY) down to only 2x a week.

LAS still remains as of now.

Not only ORF is effected. If you are interested here is the complete list:

    - BNA-TUL canceled until October
    - CAK-PBI canceled "permanently"
    - CHS-PBI canceled until October
    - CMH-PBI canceled "permanently"
    - XNA-MSY canceled until October
    - PVD-CMH canceled "permanently"
    - HPN-CHS reduce to 2x weekly until Oct.

    - SDF-CHS canceled until September
    - MSY-JAX canceled until October
    - MSY-SDF canceled until September (30)
    - MSY-SAV inaugural delayed from Sept to Oct
    - ORF-HPN reduce to 2x weekly until October
    - BDL-PIT canceled until October
    - PVD-SAV canceled until February 2023

    -RIC-JAX canceled "permanently" after tomorrow.

  10. The old one was one of the longest in the country, and the upkeep was just to much. I’d be willing to bet this time it will be two separate ones. It will lead to the checkin area / security since they will combine TSA for A, B, and future C. There will be a new Departure and Arrival terminal, similar to Richmond. Super cool to see how this pans out!

Third terminal is very needed and might be likely. About the 2nd runway though, I wonder if the navy will allow it. Last time they shot it down with the excuse that it mingled dangerously with their fight paths or whatever. I guess we will see!

It sucks we have to be so dependent on the Navy for this. They have such a large presence in our area so you’d think they’d be happy to see the airport expand. Let alone we’re talking about a flight path maybe 75 feet from the current runway…
