I drove by that place a couple of times in the last few weeks and there's definitely some interior work going on there. Such an interesting spot, perfect for a coffee shop/cafe.

On occasion, after Sunday night mass at the Catholic Information Center, my Grandma and I would stop and have ice cream there back in the early 1980's.  Don't recall the name of the shop....  It would be nice to see a cafe open there.  Its a quaint spot.

One would hope he would not come back to a spot he messed up before and mess it up again.  He would not be able to do anything in this town if that happened.

The lead developer Brian Pake, tells the Press that "This project is happening."    While I'm not in love with the rendering, it's not bad (as long as I'm not looking at EFIS).   Cross fingers that it happens.

    Hopefully this one happens.....

North End Lofts, formerly Quimby Corner, is proposing to construct a new multi-story (three) mixed use development at 220 Quimby Street Northeast. The development will provide increased density at the site and provide new residential and commercial options for residents and patrons along the Plainfield Corridor in the Creston Neighborhood and within the Creston Business District (the "Project"). The Project will include construction of a new three-story mixed use building that will contain approximately 8,100 sf of first floor retail and commercial space, 18,800 sf of residential space located on the second and third floors comprised of 36 units consisting of 18 studios and 18 one-bedroom apartments.

Derek Coppess is back, partnering with others to bring 36 unit one-bedroom market-rate apartments and 7k square feet of ground floor retail to this property.   Neighborhood organization is skeptical, and in addition wants mixed income.

Maybe I'm being selfish, but why didnt they just alter the plans to include both Acrisure buildings in one?

The master plan for this project includes a apartment tower that is suppose to sit on top of the parking garage, directly behind this office building.   I taller Asrisure building here would block the views of apartment building.

  4. Thought this might be the best place to put this.... It's basically just a rant.     MDOT has gotten better in the last few years, but it's always bugged me that they would shorten Grand Rapids' name on freeway signs.   This is a glaring example on I-96 westbound just past Lansing where there is obviously enough room to spell it out.

  6. Thanks Joe, appreciate the update!    Sure, the building could be taller, but they got the proportions right.  That's one of the things that bugs me about the Warner building.   I feel like the entrance to that building is squat.  like you are going into a cave.  It should have a grand 2 story entrance like all tall...er buildings should.

I have pretty great views of it from my home but scale/effect are lost from this perspective. That said, I walk past it every day on my way to my office and will try to take some pics today. It actually slowed down for a bit while they addressed some damage to the concrete but they're trucking along again as of yesterday.

Awesome thanks GVSUChris and Joe!  What happened to the concrete??!!

That's the "Jesus Evangelistic Center" building so you all don't have to Google it.  =)  That block still doesn't look great so this will help.  I wonder if anything will ever happen to the old Duthler's, the old Chase or if the liquor store will ever get cleaned up.  There are lots of places to eat and drink - wonder if retail (besides Bridge Street Market) will show up ever.

Rendering looks sharp!   It will be a nice addition to the neighborhood.

701 Knapp ST NE (block east of Plainfield) is sale pending and I heard a rumor that the owners of Sovengard bought it.  Not sure what for, but parking is definitely a negative for this property.  It'll be interesting to see what comes of it.

Just to have someone come in and clean up the place would be a plus.   I can't imagine that they would run any kind of restaurant out of that space, but an update similar to Creston market  would be nice.

I've noticed workers on the Monroe side (Pantlind building) of the Amway Grand. Passing by today, it looks like they are building a large patio / indoor space(?) on both sides of the main entrance (second floor) that would be accessible from the mezzanine of the old lobby. It looks pretty cool. Anyone have any details?

I agree with Kporter a bit, those proposed buildings look like crap. But I don't really care much about West Leonard so really, do whatever you want Tommy Brann.

Not a fan of the design of the proposed buildings either, but your comments about west Leonard are a bit harsh. :o

It’ll be interesting to see if anyone partners with the city on this one. It’d be an “easy” way to get some height for office or residential as you’d get a six story head start.

Speaking of parking in general, has the monthly parking crunch eased at all now that the studio park parking ramp has opened?

    Joe

It would make sense for CWD to partner on this project, since the are right next door.   They are the company that previously had an agreement to purchase the property to build an 8 story office building.  Maybe this go around, partnering with the city on the property would make it work?
