When are they going to break ground on this project?
No telling, its still in the rezoning process. I vote on it on Tuesday and then it goes to City Council.

Going on WSOC to respond to Speaker Moore's comments, so send your well wishes and any verbal ammo you have.

I sent my concerns to the the council about the UDO three weeks ago and added about this bridge and the W Trade rail station. Her answer, the only person who answered me, included an anodyne response about UDO and these sentences following:
"I am connecting you with Liz Babson, Assistant City Manager who I have copied on this email to provide you with an update on the pedestrian bridge over 277, Brooklyn project, and the rail station project on West Trade. Ms. Babson, thank you for your assistance."
Have I heard from Ms Babson? No, I have heard nothing from Ms. Babson.
Theres someone that posts on this page that is working on the engineering on this project, so its very much so in progress.

Ok hear me out: this is good news bc it takes up another empty lot.
But I also have this idea of taking the sliver of land between Midnight Diner and that gorgeous building at Trade & Brevard, and turn that into a plaza that connects to the Moxy. Use the remaining portions on that block to set up food trucks or kiosks for food. Heck, you can even extend the plaza to cross 4th as well and go behind Skye. And then on either side where there are vacant lots, build small scale entertainment like the B Tower on 5th.
Ok here's what I am thinking :
There is some strange grading in this area that will need to be fixed, but I think this is doable.

Asheville took on major debt in the time just before the Great Depression and then committed to paying their debts rather than bankruptcy as some other cities chose. It took forty years or so to complete the bond payments and during that time no projects were begun that required debt (generally). This meant that the glory period of Asheville remained and by the time the late 20th century arrived the city was ready to honor their heritage rather than losing it to the "modernity" of the mid 20th century as happened to so many other cities.
This is fantastic extra context to "but boomed during a time when people were tearing down historical architecture, unlike the other three cities which had their booms much more contemporarily when history was saved."

It struck me that they're all richly "stroll-worthy," with plenty of storefront interfaces & pedestrian engagement within the streetscape across very large swaths of their urban centers. Charlotte seems to simply lacks this. Major gap. Not sure how something like that gets corrected quickly.
I wonder if in the era of cheap money / low interest rates, it was enough to move a project forward, site unseen, just based on glossy high-level statistics about the surrounding area. I've driven by this project a bunch (I don't dare walk), and it feels very disconnected and in a very unappealing block. If folks on here are telling me apartment vacancies are high in uptown, I don't see how this project fares all that well.
I don't know if it could be corrected quickly, most of the charm these cities have is more or less illegal with modern zoning. It would require Charlotte to have been as large a center for industry along a river (timber, concrete) like Nashville. Or a town originally propped up by the richest family in America (Vanderbilts). And don't get me started on exactly how Charleston was created, because while it was a major hub for boats and shipping, it was also THE major center for Chattel slavery. Charlotte just never had quite as much of the stock of Main Street architecture as Nashville or Charleston. It did however have a similar amount as Asheville but boomed during a time when people were tearing down historical architecture, unlike the other three cities which had their booms much more contemporarily when history was saved.

this mysterious apartment complex that is rising at N Tryon right outside the 277 loop. I only say that because not much is know about the developer or the what it will finally look like. Due to road blockage I was able to get some good photos of this one. It is up to 9 floors of cinder block construction and I have no idea how tall it will be . The apartment complex mostly likely to survive a category 4 hurricane here in Charlotte.
Developer is Silver Hill Real Estate out of Columbus, Ohio, The project is 232 units, 260 parking spaces, and thats about it. It's called "Silver Hills NoDa" but I hope they figure out just how far away they are from NoDa. I emailed them this morning to ask for a rendering.

Also the Flournoy apartments from Georgia at the same intersection. and those new for sale townhomes on N Davidson at Matheson this maybe more NoDa.

Maybe if Leo's raised their prices they wouldn't have closed their business. I don't see how referencing a business that shut down 14 years ago has any relevance to prices, inflation or anything at all today.
Thanks for confirming the date, I was pretty sure they closed in 2010-12, but couldn't remember exactly.

Maybe someone needs to contact Leo from the former Leo's Deli on Elizabeth and ask him or his former employees how they managed to avoid inflation prices one items like pastrami. Opps! Sorry, there is no inflation. Right?
I remember Leo's Deli, and I'm pretty sure their Pastrami was made in a factory and came in a vacuum sealed bag, just like at most Deli's.

Making Pastrami is an expensive endeavor at small scale. Not only is a full brisket pretty expensive, but the curing process takes 10-days, requires a good amount of refrigerator space (12"x 20" for a brisket plus whatever you are brining it in), and the smoking process in a restaurant setting takes quite a bit of ventilation. I make pastrami and corned beef every year at home for friends at the beginning of spring. I cure each part of the brisket, boil one, and crust/smoke the other. The same sandwich is $30 at Katz, tho I admit Katz will take full days/years off your life they are so bountiful with beef.

The reason I ask is my daughter lives in UC but I think has applied to a couple of jobs in Uptown.
If your daughter is interested in museums at all I am pretty sure we have an opening at The Mint for a guest services associate. Won't be as annoying as a restaurant :-), and we have 5+ salaried people that started as Guest Services people and have moved into Fundraising/Development, Event Planning/Management, Membership, Education, Tour Supervision, etc. We have a staff of almost 90.

I heard the opposite strangely, probably late last year. I hope your information is correct though, I dream of walking that full loop
mine was before MLG left CCP as their Director of South End, Looks like that was Jan of 2023, so It might have been 2022 in reality. So I would trust your info in this case

Most of the development difficulty comes from sensitive water infrastructure, the only way it would be affordable is if it was done by a developer as part of a larger project. The city has had trouble justifying spending the amount needed for what essentially is a mirror of existing infrastructure. I imagine if the auto bell sits undeveloped long enough and rail trail traffic increases they’ll be able to justify it, but probably not until it’s inconvenient for everyone using it. I’d say within two years it’ll be “planned” and then it’ll be a slow process further slowed down by even a whiff of redevelopment.
I believe I got the news last year that they had reached a deal to close this gap, as part of the Auto Bell renovation, but I will have to follow up on that. I'm sure this is one of the busiest in the company.
