25million "football only" gift being used.  Adding 1000 club, 2000 GA, and suites.  A proper press box.  Team dining area. Meeting rooms.  It isn't just a few bleacher seats that is costing 60mil.  Club seats and suites are big money generators.  The additional 2000 GA seats will generate $1.4mil a year minimum.  Club and suites significantly more.  With the $25mil donation, this addition will pay itself back pretty quickly.

You clearly do not understand sarcasm. I'm glad you think the team dining area and meeting rooms make this better.

Would love to see your math on 2,000 GA seats generating 1.4 mil a year minimum? $120 per ticket? I'm an Alumni and wouldn't pay half of that.

Thanks for the nice comment, I appreciate it!

JetBlue is in pretty poor financial condition at present, and they are due to implement a massive cost savings initiative within the coming months that will include a network realignment.  This summer, CLT-BOS drops down to a single daily service on T/W/Sa. Unfortunately, CLT is exactly the kind of market that I expect they may drop as part of the realignment. Other cities that solely saw BOS service (IAD, BWI) have also been closed over the past couple of years.

Great news, CLT survived! Sad to see other cities, like MCI, get dropped. Hopefully this new B6 structure does allow for sustainable growth (JFK?)

Here's a tentative schedule of OAL flights this summer:

    Spirit: 15 daily flights

    • BOS: 1X A320
    • LAX: 1X A321N (The departure time on this is horrible - leaves CLT at 23:00 Eastern and arrives LAX at 0115 Pacific the next day)
    • FLL:  2X A321, 1X A321N
    • DFW: 1X A320
    • IAH: 1X A320
    • EWR: 1X A320, 1X A320N

    • LGA: 2X A321, 1X A321N
    • ORD: 1X A320
    • TPA: 1X A320

Frontier: 11 daily flights (most flights aren't daily, BWI/BUF/ORD/TTN are served on different days, but service averages 11 flights/day)

    • MCO: 1X A321
    • SJU: 1X A321
    • CVG: 1X A320N
    • DEN: 1X A321

    • IAH: 1X 737, 1X A319, 1X E175
    • ORD: 1X A320, 2X A319
    • EWR: 3X 7M8, 1X 737, 1X E175
    • DEN: 2X A319

    DL: 34 daily flights

    • DTW: 5X 717

    • MSP: 4X 717
    • SLC: 1X A321
    • LGA: 5X CR9
    • JFK: 5X CR9
    • BOS: 5X E175

SY: 1 flight (operates twice weekly)

    • MSP: 1X 737

B6: 2 daily flights (drops down to one daily on some days)

    • BOS: 2X E190

    WN: 9 daily flights

    • BWI: 2X 737
    • MDW: 3X 737
    • STL: 1X 737
    • BNA: 2X 737
    • DAL: 1X 737

    LH: 1 daily flight

    • MUC: 1X A359

    Some observations:

    • Delta is larger than Frontier, Spirit, Air Canada, Sun Country, JetBlue, and Lufthansa combined.
    • It's interesting to see how 717 heavy Delta is in CLT is compared to other peer cities.
    • I wouldn't be surprised to see B6 leave Charlotte. Their measly two daily flights on higher-cost E190s cannot be profitable and command a yield, especially when competing against AA/DL/NK. There are rumored to be some station closures coming up, so we'll have to see if CLT is one of them.
    • I'd be shocked if more than half of Frontier's recent additions stick around. Both Frontier and Spirit are adding then dropping route pairs like crazy these days to see what sticks.

This is awesome, your posts are always so insightful.

    A few thoughts:

    • B6 could upgauge with the complete termination of the Spirit merger?
    • Does WN have plans to bring back PHX?
    • AC running (3) E175 flights daily, could YUL be next?
    • DL JFK/LGA all regional, will that change?
    • Still hopeful that UA will expand West (SFO)
    • Thanks 2

That would bring the Canadian destinations to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Quebec City. Quebec City doesn't have pre-clearance though so the flight will need to arrive as a full international arrival on Concourse D. Will be interesting to see if they pick mainline like an A319 or a PSA regional CRJ-900.

I could see AA adding Halix at some point where they have some flights to the Northeast hubs, but CLT would provide better connections to warm beach getaways. Winnipeg and Edmonton seem very long and thin routes and AA doesn't fly to those airports today.

As a French Canadian, I am extremely about this one. With the recent AC up gauge from YUL,  Quebec service out of CLT is growing quite well. Interesting that the route doesn't start until August as June/July are big travel months.

I recall Avelo stated in a government filing when they first started flying that they had intentions to serve CLT, but JQF has the space and is likely cheaper to operate so it makes sense.

I personally cannot imagine they would want to go and compete with Allegiant on their Florida routes - I can't imagine Avelo growing there.

Definitely agree - maybe they try northern routes first.

There are FL gaps in Allegiants routes that Avelo could try. PBI, VPS, and RSW all come to mind.

Not CLT specific but Charlotte area specific.  Concord-Padgett Regional Airport has an announcement tomorrow and appears to be in line for new service on Ultra Low Cost Carrier Avelo Airlines!

Original flights would be to New Haven, CT with the likelihood of flights to Florida coming in the future.

Avelo has already set up a base at RDU and operate to several other airports in the Carolinas in Wilmington, Asheville, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Greenville, SC.

I supposed they found Concord to less costly and less congested.  This will be Concord's 2nd carrier along with Allegiant.

Not surprising, but I feel like this could be a bigger deal in the near future. Allegiant was suppose to build a "base" with (2) 320's stationed at JQF a couple years back. Instead, they have shrunk their Concord ops.

If Avelo can figure out solid expansion plans, I could see a 737 being based here with multiple flight adds by EOY.

Yep, Delta Connection had a CRJ-900 go mechanical at gate A7 and Delta uses all their gates for their morning departure bank, so they needed an extra gate compared to normal to accommodate their normal schedule + the extra CRJ-900 that was stuck on A7 and didn't leave for Atlanta until this morning (looks like it was ferried back for repairs). The airport likely asked Air Canada to move over to D so Delta could use additional gates on A.

Got it, thank you both for your replies on this!

I dislike flying Spirit, but I appreciate the fare suppression they add on routes to provide competition to legacy carriers. Chicago will now have American, United, Southwest, and Spirit.

It looks like the airport has done some gate shuffling to accommodate Spirit's growth in Charlotte and they largely have gates A28 and A29. Frontier has moved over to A22 where JetBlue used to sit on a gate they barely utilized. JetBlue is now sharing A26 with Southwest (who also uses A24). A26 must be common use as it looks like Spirit sometimes overflows to A26 when A28 and A29 are full.

Spirit now serves 10 cities from CLT: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York La Guardia, and Orlando

IMO Charlotte based travelers should be against the merger with JetBlue, who will likely dismantle the operations Spirit has here to redeploy the aircraft to their hubs and eliminate many routes (we know the JetBlue team has struggled in CLT and they are down to Boston only). JetBlue just wants Spirit for the planes and crew to bolster their hubs... not the network.

This is a great post, always appreciate your insight.

WN has grown nicely at CLT as well. Once A II is complete and Delta shifts, will any gates open up for non AA carriers? The competition is great for Charlotte and will hopefully encourage AA to continue to invest in upgrades.

There is a bag drop after clearing customs for checked bags to continue their journey, but the security screening process for the connecting domestic flight is back upstairs through the standard security check points.

Due to construction at CLT, only checkpoints A and E are open for regular security screening. Checkpoint B is closed for remodeling, Checkpoint C is TSA Precheck only, and Checkpoint D is Employees + TSA Precheck overflow. Due to the reduction in security lanes right now, A and E are regularly 20 minute+ waits with the masses of people that travel rarely, have their overstuffed carry on bag with toiletries and laptop, and move slowly. The TSA Precheck Checkpoint at C is still usually walk right through to 5 minute waits.

B was open for Precheck only today, 30 min line when I went through.

There's a lot more narrowbody gates at CLT than widebody gates. And there's also a capacity constraint with customs and immigration. I can't imagine we're going to see Caribbean flying replaced with Europe flying on any meaningful scale. Once AA has the XLRs more of that may be possible, but I'd expect that narrowbody Europe flying to supplement the Caribbean network at CLT. There's a lot more demand for the Caribbean than to Europe (especially for leisure flyers) and no hub can beat CLT for moving a lot of people somewhere very cheaply.

Hmm, probably? I suppose depending on how they phase it they could minimize the need to close B/C gates before new ones are available. But they'd still lose at least a few on the ends of the concourses during construction.

Great point. Weren't there plans to add customs capabilities to some of the C gates too? Would be extremely beneficial for the XLR.

Once A North II opens AA will be up to around 100 or so gates. 7-8 flights per gate per day is heavy use but should be doable. AA has also pulled down their regional flying the last couple years because the regional airlines are having trouble staffing the flight decks. Assuming the pilot situation changes they should be able to restore or even grow the regional ops which will boost the flight numbers. The article touches on that point. In any case AA would definitely be pushing the terminal to its limits with 800 flights.

The B and/or C extensions could also be complete by 2028, right? That would be about 10 more gates each, but I assume the 800 flight number in the article didn't include those.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when A North II opens, won't they have to close a few gates at B/C for expansion?

Pretty remarkable to see how much earth moving equipment is onsite. Interesting note - 20 additional arrivals once it is complete. Does this alter anything? Or just relief from other runways?

Capacity reduction at AA hubs including Charlotte which seems to have the smallest reduction.

""CLT among airports where the cuts will hit
With the latest cuts, American's capacity between May and September will be up 6% year over year, but down about 4% from 2019.

Several of American's biggest hubs will see the largest cuts:

Chicago O'Hare International Airport - Reduction of 5,910 flights, or 11.3%
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport - Reduction of 5,054 flight, or 5.3%
Charlotte Douglas International Airport - Reduction of 3,991 flights, or 4.5%
Philadelphia International Airport - Reduction of 3,706 flights, or 10.3%
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport - Reduction of 2,822 flights, or 11.1%

Koos noted that American — which controls 90% of total flights at Charlotte Douglas — will operate nearly 600 daily departures in June and July from CLT.

Despite the constraints on capacity, Isom said demand for flying remains strong. He told analysts last month that post-holiday bookings are off to a "strong" start.""

Wondering how many of DFW and CLT cuts are regional. PHL has been taking blows left and right recently - they can barely support trans con service.

Will this be CLT's strongest INT'l summer yet?

That's awesome news, and I believe that this is the first time CLT has had nonstop service to the West Coast on a carrier that hasn't been affiliated with AA or US.

I also think that this route has the potential to withstand the JetBlue/Spirit acquisition, unlike their recent adds of CLT-DFW, etc. JetBlue has been desperately attempting to build a presence in the LA Basin, and Spirit has a respectful route network ex LAX. Although the DOJ just filed a lawsuit on the acquisition, I still believe the merger will go through.

Regarding Lufthansa, the late aircraft up-gauge is somewhat odd and I imagine that it has little to do with Charlotte. It looks like Lufthansa is pulling the A350 off most of their North American long-haul routes ex-MUC. Despite the A346 being larger, the seating capacity is virtually the same as the A350. However, the 2-4-2 configuration is more comfortable in Economy on the A346 than the 3-3-3 on the A350.

The plane is due to be retired within the near future, so if you have never flown on the type (and wanted to experience using the john in the basement of an airplane thanks to the lower deck lavatories), now is a good opportunity to do so.

    When did Spirit add CLT-DFW?

LH's 346 flies routes with high levels of business traffic, hence the 18-J configuration. The 359 has less premium seating, which explains the up gauge.

  15. Pretty awesome to see what CLT is kicking off right now, things that I have seen begin construction in the past month (let me know what I left off!) -

    • Canopy for terminal
    • Midwood Smokehouse in Terminal B
    • Aviation Museum
    • North End Wrap Around Taxiway
    • De Icing Pad / South runway connector is moving along nicely
    • Foundation for Terminal A Phase II
    • Taxiway widening for Terminal D flow

Once E is demolished, the land will then simply transition into a hardstand space. No concourse or gates will be built over the former E footprint, with the exception of 3-5 international gates to the North of D, near where the escalators are currently. Keep in mind that several gates on the C Concourse will eventually be able to handle international arrivals once the sterile FIS corridor is built.

Here is an overview of the master plan, circa 2035:

    spacer.png

Definitely a few tweaks - There will be a de icing pad to the south  (where buildings are pictured) and the removal of Phase III of Terminal A come to mind.

Would love to see cargo expansion as part of the long term plan.
